Vehicle Detail
I’ve owned this fully documented, 57,000 mile Cougar for nearly 30 years and it has been one hell of a car for me. Originally it was a creampuff with a 351c 2bbl, FMX transmission and skinny white walls. It didn’t take me long to make it into the untamed elegant muscle car you see in these pictures. It was one of the first “restomod”, “clone”, “tribute” cars before there was even a name for this type of restoration. The original 351c was removed and I built a stock 1970 351c 4bbl with quench heads that was spec’d and dressed as close to a Boss 351 as possible. I pulled the FMX transmission out, put in a C4 and a couple years later installed the bulletproof C6 it has today. I bought the vintage finned aluminum 14” rims in the late 1970’s and installed them in the early 1980’s and added the BOSS decals from a BOSS 351 Mustang stripe kit. It has a recent (in the past 5 years) set of headers, which I believe were Cyclone brand, then I had modified to fit and coated by JBA here in San Diego. In the time I've owned this car it has gone through a few changes, but has mainly stayed the same since the early 1990’s. This car has won over 100 trophies at local San Diego, Southern California and national events over the past 30 years. It has participated in and placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd at several Cougar Nationals over the years including in Albuquerque, Denver, San Jose, Seattle and Southern California shows. It has taken us on vacation to the Grand Canyon, Route 66 and the Ford Proving Grounds in Arizona. It was driven to every one of these events, not trailered, was always very reliable and got us home in one piece. It has participated in several Ford sponsored Lincoln Mercury shows and displays such as the 50th anniversary of Mercury in 1989 at Palm Springs and the introduction of the 1987 Cougar in Century City. It has carried dignitaries in the Super Bowl parade, following the San Diego Charger loss to the 49ers in 1994. It has been the poster child for Ford’s marketing of the Fab Fords show at Knott’s Berry Farm several times, including being part of a special display this year. This display featured two cars that were at the first show 25 years ago, a 65 Mustang fastback and this Cougar. It has had many celebrities grace it’s fenders such as Dan Gurney, Jill St. James, Lindsay Wagner, Red Poling, Parnelli Jones and this past year, Miss Hurst - Linda Vaughn (pictured with the car). This car has lived a dream life among its peers, including being featured in a Muscle car calendar (and on the calendar cover) and in Super Ford magazine (also on the cover). This car was originally sold in California and has lived in sunny San Diego its entire life. It has never been in a major accident, the body is straight, has no dents, major scratches and has rust free original sheet metal, floors and doors. The car was repainted by the second owner before I bought it (I’m the third owner) and I replaced the trunk lid years ago to add the rear spoiler, which is correct for this year Cougar. I’ve replaced some of the exterior trim here and there over the years, just for upkeep and desirability. I removed the A/C from the car and disconnected the heater years ago to lighten the car as I raced at Carlsbad Raceway it the early 1980’s (running mid 14s at 95-99mph). The A/C (nor heater) really wasn’t needed here in San Diego, although the sale includes the old compressor, pulleys, belt idlers and a couple of the hoses, also I have an original air filter housing with snorkel and lid. Included with the sale of this car is a custom front end protector that attaches to the front bumper and was designed by a friend that worked at the San Diego Aerospace Museum. It works great on those long trips in the Southwest keeping butterflies, bees and bugs out of the finned headlight covers. This Cougar is an actual low mileage XR7, with original leather interior, console, rare manual roll up windows and air conditioning (removed). The power convertible top has folding glass back window, is in good condition and functions perfectly. My Cougar runs and drives well in local traffic and on the highway (especially with 3:00 rear gears). The original interior is in excellent condition with the exception of the drivers seat which that has a couple of cracks in it. The only other minor discrepancies are the original AM-FM radio and clock are not functioning. This car comes with documentation, owners manual, many receipts (Stang-it, Branda, Fomoco, Perogie, John's Cougar, Green Sales, etc.), vintage brochures, the Super Ford magazine and Calendar it was in. I have enjoyed this car for three decades, but recently have too many projects and it has come time in my life to part with my beloved Cougar. As you can see by the pictures, it may not be perfect, but this is a sharp car, a real head turner both on the road and at local shows. This is a fun car to drive, show, enjoy, improve upon and is a GREAT INVESTMENT!!!!!
