Vehicle Detail

Offered for auction: MG ZB Magnette, 1958. Although not in perfect, let alone concours shape, it is still a 1958 MG ZB Magnette. The sporting coupe of the fifties, or to some to fore runner to the modern GTI concept. During manufacturing at the Abingdon plant parts for the various models and their individual specifications were "staged" along side the manufacturing "lanes." The specific vehicle chassis number was hand written on the none visible side of the large parts with a large greasy marker usually in yellow. This Magnette still has the correct chassis number in yellow on the underneath of the bonnet/hood; 33004. As mentioned this Magnette is far from concours, and has had a number of set backs during its life, but then haven't we all? The Magnette lost barn space to a, bloody, horse. A horse stall needed to be created, and of course the Magnette had to spent the winter outside. Since both the horse (deceased) and its owner are gone (unfortunately not deceased), but the Magnette suffered from a leaking windshield gasket with the dire result of a delaminated corner of the dashboard on the driver side. I stumbled upon this particular car in early 1996, and drove this car through the early part of 2003. The brakes were getting on the hard side, and a fresh baby undermined the will power and enthusiasm of lying on the cold concrete repairing the brakes. The brakes are still operational, but the pedal is rather hard. The front wheel cylinders I have obtained since, and will come with the car, while the rear are equivalent to the MGA. The sills were replaced prior to my care of the vehicle. The installation was not perfect, but quite adequate considering. There is some rust in the front floor boards, but as a driver I could never be too bothered. The front and rear chassis rails are in excellent condition, and do not show any sign of accident damage. The inner panels of the engine compartment are also in excellent sondition, and so is the trunk floor and rear panels. The doors also are in good condition, but I have not been able to open the right rear door. The grille centre ridge had its curvature realigned in the past, and does not show its best. The rest of the grille is in decent shape. The paint is faded, and probably even buffing would not bring much shine back. The doors are marked by chip, probably by other car door hitting them. I am more of a driver, than after a concours vehicle, and although it was always my intent to repaint it never came to that. The interior received a major upgrade, again prior to my tenure, and was redone quite tastefully, and age appropriate, at least in feel. The seats were recovered in reddish brown velour, while the door and other interior panels were reupholstered in red vinyl. The headliner must have been replaced at the same time, and is in excellent condition. There is a slight drop between the driver side front and rear door though. The fuel tank was riddled with holes, and thanks to this very auction site a replacement tank was found and installed. The oil-bath airfilter is missing in the photograph after an oil leak, due to a split side, was discovered. The body of the airfilter was epoxied, but an additional housing will be included. I was able to salvage some, albeit ripped up, pieces of trunk panelling for templates, which although nice is not absolutely necessary. This Magnette is being sold without any type of warranties. It is sold as-is, where is. I will assist the buyer with shipping of the vehicle, but prefer a local pick-up as I do not feel comfortable the car will start every time for a commercial shipper. Payment is expected in full within seven (7) days of auction end either through PayPal or wire transfer otherwise the deposit becomes non refundable and the sale void. I have always enjoyed driving the Magnette, which throws you back to the fifties style of motering. It still has bias ply tyres, now not at their best, which allowed this little car to flung about with abandon and safety. Where can one find a car today, which will happily rear wheel drift through a corner and at moderate speeds? What did we lose in the mean time? I have decided to pare my collection down, and concentrate on my MGC's and my MGB V8, which all are daily drivers. Thank you for your interest. Powered by eBay Turbo ListerThe free listing tool.
