Vehicle Detail

Up for sale is a 1983 Datsun 280ZX non-turbo GL (Grand Luxury) Coupe. I have owned the car since June of 2004. It is in all around great condition and it runs strong. It has some basic performance modifications and many new parts. It has been well maintained and has nearly complete service records. This is a New Mexico car (originally purchased in Santa Fe) and has stayed in the Southwest (New Mexico, Arizona and briefly Colorado) so it is virtually rust free. It has a clean CARFAX report. It passed New Mexico emissions last time it was required to do so. I have owned the car since 2004 and have taken very good care of it. It has never been in any accidents, raced on the streets or smoked in. It is never driven in the snow and always warmed up properly before driving. It is currently kept in a garage, and has been parked in a covered area much of the time I have owned it (about half the time). The car has never been abused or driven above 80 mph. Most of the miles since I bought it are highway miles; I ride a motorcycle most of the time I'm in town. I have done almost all of the service on the car myself (I have worked as an automotive service technician), and when I have taken it to a mechanic I used only reputable private shops that I am familiar with Most performance parts and accessories are from Motorsport Auto (MSA).I have priced this car to sell; there is NO RESERVE on this auction. Below is a list of 1) new or replaced parts and accessories 2) performance modifications 3) service information and 4) any problems, wear and damage that the car has. It still has the original spare tire and inflation canister, which have never been used. It also has the original car jack and wheel chock set that it was sold with. I will also include: Original Owners Manual Original Vehicle Warranty Information Packet (useless, just cool to have) Original Goodyear Tire Warranty Packet (same here) T-top Bags (2) Hanes Service Manual Chilton's Service Manual K&N Air Filter Recharge Kit CB Radio/Antenna Extra “280ZX” Shift Knob Original Coded Key and Fobs Service Information As I mentioned earlier, I've worked as a mechanic before, and I prefer to do my own work when possible. I've made a chart to keep track of recommended service, which I've stuck to and will include with the car. Below is a brief overview of the service that the car has had since I bought it. I change the oil at least every 3000 miles. While I was in college living in the dorms I took it to the shop for oil changes. I've changed the oil myself since I moved out in the summer of 2007. I started using Castrol GTX but have since switched to Mobil 1 after doing some research. As I mentioned, I use K&N oil filters, and replace them every other oil change, or every 7K miles. I've changed the differential oil once (in January of 2007) and it is recommended every 30K miles. I've flushed the entire coolant system twice, once when I bought the car and once in January 2010. I use Prestone 50/50 coolant. This is also recommended every 30K miles. The transmission fluid has been changed every 30K miles as well, most recently when I replaced the clutch in January 2009. The brake system was flushed and new fluid put in when I replaced the brake lines in January of 2009. The spark plugs have been replaced at least every 15K miles as well, most recently in August of 2009. The A/C system was recharged in 2004 with R1-12, and it blows cold. The car recently had a valve adjustment and timing done. Problems, Wear and Damage The car is in great condition all around and has no major problems with it. However it is over 25 years old, and has been my daily driver since I've owned it, and is by no means in show condition. Below is a list of all the wear and tear. There are small chips in the paint, most notably on the hood. There is one rust spot just above the windshield. Water got into a crack during a big storm. This is the only rust on the vehicle. There are two small chips in the windshield. The car sometimes needs to be given some gas on startup, or else it will stall. One of the inlets on the charcoal canister is broken so one hose is disconnected. This doesn't affect the car at all, and would only raise eyebrows among the most environmentally friendly members of the California Highway Patrol. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) tube was removed when I installed the header. The car still passes emissions fine without it. The dash is cracked BADLY. Even with a dash mat, the New Mexico sun slaughtered it. It gets up to about 110 degrees where I live. Most Datsuns have cracked dashes, but this one didn't until I bought it and took it down to the southern part of the state. The tape player works, but sometimes eats tapes up. The volume control on the radio is finicky; you have to mess with it a bit to adjust volume. Although the A/C and heater work great, the top vents are stuck in the closed position. I suspect that this is a vacuum issue, though I haven't been able to fix it. The brights are stuck in the on position. With the tinted headlight covers and the low height of the vehicle, no one seems to notice. The turn signals act funny when the weather is really cold. They'll sometimes go out and you'll have to hit the switch again. The drivers seat has one tear in the side. The carpeting on the passenger side is damaged; a previous owner did not have a floor mat on that side (a killing offense, in my book). There is also a tear in the rear carpet. The washer fluid nozzles do not squirt fluid. The motor works fine, so I believe that they are clogged. The speedometer is not very accurate; it only gives you a basic idea of your speed (most old Japanese gauges are a little suspect). The tachometer works fine. There is also a rattle in this area of the dash. The voltmeter doesn't work. It broke after I was jump starting someone and he tapped the cables on his battery terminal repeatedly several times (Lord knows why). I suspect something in the gauge blew. The cover to the dome light is missing (the light works fine). The car leaks a small amount of coolant from one of the secondary hoses. The parking brake barely works. The cable is stretched. Some of the plastic clips on the distributor are cracked, and occasionally become loose. A few fasteners are missing from the interior of the car. Nothing important. The driver side control for the passenger window USUALLY doesn't work, so to roll down the passenger side window, one has to lean over and use the passenger side switch. The driver side window has a slight rattle when it's all the way down. A bumper in the door is loose. The paint on the mirrors faded, so the previous owner painted them black. The shocks do not hold the rear hatch up. Nothing is wrong with them; the car was designed at sea level (in Japan) and where I live (at about 5,000 ft altitude) the hatch is too heavy for them. Like I said, despite minor problems, the car is in great condition, and it runs fine. Most of the wear on the car is cosmetic. On the bright side, a lot of stuff that normally breaks on old cars is still working on this one (ignition light, radio, cruise control, power windows, locks and mirrors, etc). Special Features This car has the GL, or Grand Luxury package, which meant that it came with a rear window louver, a rear-window wiper-washer, better Goodyear tires, power steering, power windows, a four-speaker stereo radio, an electrically adjustable passenger side mirror (power mirrors are standard on the driver's side), cruise control, and a dual fuel gauge (a smaller needle is inset in the gauge measuring fuel from empty to 1/8 of a tank). The car “talks” and tells you if a door is open or the parking brake is one when you're driving, if you are low on coolant, washer fluid or fuel, or if you leave the lights on when you turn the car off. Pretty cool, even today. The car also has t-tops, and it's a blast to drive with them off. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Contact Please contact Stewart at (505) 239-3421 or stuey@nmsu.edu if you have any questions about this car.
