Vehicle Detail
1973 911E: This auction is for a 1973 Porsche 911E. This is one of most desirable of the early cars, as is has the best balance of performance and tractability. It pulls from 1000 RPM’s all the way to 7100 RPM’s, and sounds great doing it. You can run the car at 3000 RPM’s in top gear up hills…try that with an S! The restoration of this Porsche has been performed with great attention to detail and originality. Literally every square inch of this car has been gone over. Floorboards are original, as the 1973 911E was the first 911 to use galvanized steel. This car was delivered to southern California in 1973, was driven to Virginia in 1987 and stored indoors for two years before I bought it. I had Horseless Carriage bring it back to southern California when I moved here, and I have been driving it around the excellent mountain roads under sunny skies. I’ve driven this car around 3,500 miles, and it has been extremely reliable and a ton of fun to drive. I’m a private individual and not a car dealer. This car has been my project car after acquiring it 12 years ago, having wanted a 1973 E coupe since I worked for Electrodyne in the 80's. I have restored several sports cars over my lifetime, and was a professional mechanic, service manager, and a crew chief for a sports car racing team in the 90’s. When I bought this car it was complete, and had a decent 10 year old paint job in non-original white. I’ve since invested countless hours of my own time and over $20,000 in parts and labor. I have receipts for everything that has been done since I’ve owned the car. I am in the process of moving to Texas, so it is time to sell the car and start another project. I get back to California every other weekend, so inspections and test drives will be arranged for the weekends I am back in town. The next opportunity will be Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Restoration details: 1. This car has had complete body and paint work performed to a high standard in the original Porsche silver. All glass, rubber trim, seals, interior, accessories, etc were removed. The body was stripped, and multiple layers of high quality primer were applied, allowed to dry for weeks, and sanded by professionals. The shop did not rush the job...I believe it was at the shop for seven months. The manager is a personal friend, and he had his best techs do it right. The fenders were replaced with new OEM fenders, as was the left rear fender mount. A leaking antenna seal allowed the left fender and mount to begin rusting, and all rusted steel was cut out and replaced. There is one flaw on the body: At some time in the car's history, the right front battery got acid on the area just forward of the battery box, near the right bumper mounts. There are two small perforations, the larger about an inch in diameter. This damage is not rust caused, and has not grown or changed in any way in the 12 years I have owned the car. The trunk carpet also suffered some burn through. All this is visible in the Photobucket album http://s795.photobucket.com/albums/yy233/VAdanno/1973%20911E/ 2. The interior has been restored with all original style materials including the German wool carpet, headliner, seat upholstery, and dash pad. 928 Leatherworks (Jay Leno uses the same shop) did the dash and supplied the German vinyl for the door panels. I have a Recaro sport bucket seat and two Momo steering wheels (the original Prototipo wore out, but I saved it) available if interested. They are an improvement over the stock seat and wheel, and I used them until this spring when I reinstalled the original drivers seat and steering wheel. Some items on the interior are still original, like the door pockets and seat hardware. They are serviceable, but if you are looking for a concours car, restoring/replacing these will be on your project list. 3. Car came stock with Koni shocks, and the suspension bushings and anti sway bar bushings were replaced and a complete alignment at the factory ride height was performed. 4. This car has all new rubber seals inside and out, all new bumper trim, moldings and turn signal lenses, new windshield, original window trim moldings and Durant rear view mirror. The window trim moldings have some scratches on them, so they aren't perfect. 5. Rebuilt engine, original E engine with OEM mechanical fuel injection system. The engine runs like new, cold starts instantly, idles perfectly, runs smoothly to red line, or just cruises along, waiting for the next curvy road. 7R case was Time-Serted, chain tensioner savers installed, stainless steel valves, rebuilt everything (fuel pump rebuilt by H&R Fuel injection, oil pump, distributor, alternator, etc.) and all standard rebuild actions for air cooled Porsche engines completed. You can replace the hot rod spark plug wires and coil if you are going to concours the car, but they help keep the engine in tune longer. 6. Rebuilt 1973 5 speed transmission with factory ZF limited slip with less than 3500 miles. 7. Dunlop M50 tires size 195 65 15 on restored (Ye Old Wheel Shop) ATS cookie cutter wheels. 8. New brake components, rebuilt calipers, including original E/S aluminum front calipers. 9. Flushed, cleaned and restored fuel system (fuel filter, new injectors, fuel tank, etc.) 10. Original, no rust floor boards with original under carpet sound proof pads still in place. 11. Original VDM steering wheel restored by AGLA. 12. Every part on this car is German and original Porsche and either new, new old stock or very nice original used parts. Premium upgrades (like SSI heat exchangers) are only deviation from this standard. 13. Comes with the original owner’s manual and the certificate of authenticity from Porsche. I would tell you it is possible Porsche's records are not perfect. I had to tell them the first certificate was wrong, and I believe this one has at least two errors. It shows the car came with black and white Tartan plaid inserts on the front seats, and rectangular fog lights mounted under the bumper. From what I could find out, 1973 cars had a black and white houndstooth cloth inserts, not Tartan plaid. I also learned it is difficult to find the fabric, and did not want to do so until I knew exactly what came with the car when new. The horn grilles are the cutout style for grill mounted fog lights, so I think it came with grill mounted fogs. I bought a set of lights, but since I never drive the car in the dark, I never mounted them. I tried to contact the original owners to find out exactly how the car was delivered, but never got a response from them. I would suggest interested buyers contact me to inspect the vehicle. This is not a perfect concours car, but it is extremely nice. I have been driving it, and it has two small paint chips on the hood and one mark on the fender where installing the headlight trim ring caused a scratch. In general, the only weakness is the original chrome trim. The trim is in good condition, not great. It seeps a little oil after being driven, which is typical for old Porsche engines. I have never needed to add any oil, ever. Send me a message via eBay, and we can coordinate a pre purchase inspection. You can decide for yourself if you want to live with the flaws, as I do, or complete the restoration to a high concours standard. I like driving the car too much to make it "too nice to drive". Co-pilot (pictured) NOT included. He will be upset when Daddy's "fancy car" moves on to a new caretaker, but he needs to learn to build and maintain his own car, anyway.
