It was designed to show its critics what the 996 was capable of. Porsche planned to build 3,000 "Mark II" GT3s through mid-2004. Some 750 came to America, where base price was just short of $100,000. Porsche termed this GT3 "a pure sports car for the Porsche purist." AutoWeek called it "the ultimate driver's 911." Road & Track said: "In this latest iteration, the 996 platform finally gets to show its full potential. Quicker, stiffer, and graced with an intoxicating new powerplant, the 2004 GT3 illustrates that Porsche still knows how to build a true driver's machine." And this is completely street-legal. It is the lightest, revviest, most unsullied of rear-drive non-turbo Carreras to date. But the 2004 GT3 was no mere rehash, being based on the beefy new C4S structure. Porsche cut out 318 pounds to achieve a 3,043-pound curb weight. They also attacked the 3.6-liter G96 engine to trim reciprocating weight as much as possible from conrods, pistons, valves, and lifters. Other changes included a new intake, low-restriction exhaust, a reprogrammed ECU, revised cam profiles and Variocam valve timing and uprated dry-sump oiling system. With all this, the new Porsche GT3 in U.S. tune claimed 380HP at 7,400 rpm, 285LB/FT of torque at 5,000, and an 8,200-rpm redline. Porsche's "asymmetric" limited-slip differential was standard. Suspension was basically twin-turbo GT2. Adjustable camber, ride height, and antiroll bars catered to different "driving styles". Brakes were even larger than Porsche Turbo's, with steel rotors of 13.8-inch diameter in front and 13-inch in rear clamped by six-piston calipers. This car features the Upgraded Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB). Front wheels and tires were also from GT2, but the rear tires were slightly slimmer 295/30ZR18s making it more agile. Bodywork was customized with a specific nose and side skirts and a new, taller fixed spoiler. Unseen but appreciated were little "spoilers" within the wheelarches for directing air to the brakes. The 996 Body style has been the most successful selling 911 since its introduction and undeniably the 911 GT3 is the rarest and most performance oriented of the run. Finding a low mile example with only 1 owner, Clean Carfax and Carbon Ceramic brakes is becoming harder to do at realistic prices. But not today!
