Vehicle Detail
1971 Mercedes Benz 500SL 2DR Sports Roadster Convertible Classic V8, Automatic, Leather, 89,950 mi. Red Exterior, Beige Interior - w/Black Rag Top (2 yrs old). Purrs Like A Kitten. Purchased vehicle in February 2008 for $8K+ as fun riding and restoration project. Since that time, heart attack and retirement have not provided opportunity to engage in these extracurricular activities. Vehicle mechanically sound, motor is in excellent running condition, and runs like a top... Interior is all original. Center console has a few cracks and would would look great if replaced. Vehicle manufactured with Rear Buddy Seating (add-on). The rear buddy seat cushions are missing. Additionally, there are no sun visors -- these retail for about $250. Vehicle manufactured with: single seats, hardtop mount, automatic transmission (with floorshift), safety belts, central locking, outside side view mirrors, mechanical antenna, rear seats, headrests, heat insulated glass & heated rear pane, alloy wheels, soft-top fabric. Chassis Number: 107 043 12 009108 Engine Number: 116 982 12 009492 Transmission Number: 004052 Key Code: HD 4060 A really great car for a great low price. Introduced in 1971, Mercedes made the new R107 SL for 20 years. The R107 was designed to meet many future years of crash safety regulations, was built like a tank and weighed a ton, actually, 1 - 3/4 tons. It was the strongest convertible ever made. The Mercedes-Benz SL is a roadster manufactured by Mercedes since 1954. The designation SL derives from the German Sport Leicht, or Sport Light. For the first time in the history of the model series an eight-cylinder power plant did duty under the long bonnet. From all sides it made the impression of a strong, self-confident, imposing open-top vehicle. Its fathers also gave it an equally well designed, removable coupé roof for the road. Besides elegance and quality the body radiated safety, since the crash behavior of the two-seater was far ahead of its time. The 107 chassis had the longest run of any Mercedes chassis, 18 years from 1971 to 1989. Some 237,000 107 chassis SL's were built. About two thirds were sold in the US. The story is that while it was under development at Mercedes, the R107 was referred to as "der Panzerwagen" because it weighed more than 3,400 pounds — the R107's wheelbase was 2.5 inches longer, and it was about a quarter-inch wider and a quarter-inch lower. However, the styling, with horizontal headlights (paired round ones in North America, single squarish units in the rest of the world) and fluted rear taillights, made the new car appear much wider. Some criticized the car for being "Americanized." Americanized or not, it sold better than ever.
