Vehicle Detail
The 1979 Porsche 930 was an upgraded Turbo Carrera that began with a 2-mm wider bore that upped displacement to 3,299cc (201.3 cid). No less important was adoption of an air-to-air intercooler for squeezing a denser charge into every intake stroke, thus extracting more energy from every power stroke. Compression was higher, if still mild at 7.0:1, and combined with the intercooler and extra cc's for 300 DIN horsepower European at 5,500 rpm (253 SAE net) and 303 pound-feet of torque (282 SAE) at 4,000 rpm. For the record, Car and Driver timed 0-60 at 4.9 seconds and 0-100 at 12.1, still quite colossal. Braking? C/D reported that the huge, cross-drilled four-piston discs delivered 70-0 mph in just 168 feet. Skid pad performance was as impressive as ever at 0.81 g. This particular '79 930 has been mine since 1997. I am the third owner and the car is a California car. This was my dream car since I was 10 years old and I never planned on selling it. I purchased a 993 and now I don't have space for two Porsches so I'm selling this one. Since I never planned on selling it, I poured countless dollars into upgrades with no expense spared. The upgrades include: 1. Complete exterior restoration in 2003 to the tune of $10,000. The paint job was performed by Images in Campbell, Ca. using the original German Glasurit paint. This car is painted in the original color which is Indiana Red Metallic. This paint code was special older in 1979 and is very rare if not the only one every painted this color. All body panels are the original steel panels with no bondo. All windows are original and were removed and reinstalled with new OEM rubber seals. No leaks. Paint is in excellent condition with very few imperfections. 2. Interior is all stock and original including factory leather sport seats. Carpet is original and in perfect condition. Pedal cluster was rebuilt with new OEM bronze bushings. Shift linkage is completely rebuilt with OEM bushings. The only item that is not original in the interior is the Stereo. It is a Blaupunkt but not the original. I don't have the original stereo. The interior over all is in very nice condition. See photos. 3. Wheels are Forged 17" Fikse FM-10 that are as strong and light as the original fuch wheel but because they are bigger, they allow for much better rubber to be installed. These wheels cost me more than $4000. The tires are like new and they are the very expensive Bridgestone S02 front and rear. 4. The suspension is where I spent the most time and money trying to make this car handle and ride like I thought a Porsche should with an emphasis on the word "ride". I liked the look and handling of a lowered car but when you lower an older Porsche, it messes up the geometry of the suspension resulting in some very bad characteristics such as "bump steer" and a rough ride. I was never able to get the situation fixed until I took the car to Jerry Woods in Campbell, Ca. The people at Jerry Woods are some of the most knowledgeable Porsche people in the world. They set me up with some Fox SRP Coil Over Adjustable Remote Reservoir Shocks on all four corners. These Fox coil overs are the best you can get for a Porsche. They allow for full travel of the shock piston and adjustable spindle height which maintains the factory geometry and provides a dramatic improvement in ride/handling/bump steer etc An Elephant racing bump steer kit was also installed. All torsion bars are Weltmeister Hollow Core Lightweight Oversized that dramatically improve lurch/dive/handling. Front sway bar is a factory sport 22mm with rubber bushings and the rear sway bar is a weltmeister 22mm adjustable. The rear spring plates are weltmeister adjustable ride height. Every bushing on the car in new OEM rubber bushings that have been radiused to let the suspension travel freely through its range. The only poly bushings on the car are the rear spring plate bushings which improves handling and longevity. Ball joints are new and OEM equipment. There is also a weltmeister upper strut bar that was necessary for proper alignment. Once installed they aligned and corner balanced the car for a driver weighing 200lbs. The car drives and handles better than my 993. The whole setup cost me around $6000 so trust me you won't be disappointed. 5. The brakes are original and in perfect working condition. The pads and rotors have been replaced recently. There is no warp age. The parking brake works fine. See photos of front pads. Master cylinder is also new and is OEM equipment. 6. The engine is the original 3.3L except for a few upgrades. The camshafts are from Webcam and they are the "SC" grind for more torque. The intercooler is a Kokeln type that includes a 993 turbo bypass valve. The exhaust upgrade provided the most noticeable improvement. Its a Powerhuas T304 Stainless header with heater boxes. The headers are hooked to a new K27 turbo that dramatically reduces turbo lag. The ignition system is MSD. I also installed a wide band O2 sensor system from Innovate motor sports that allows for precise air/fuel adjustment. The car runs at 13:1 AFR at full power. All of the California emissions equipment was removed prior to me owning the car so I can't sell to a California resident unless you are willing to take the responsibility for the smog. The oil has been changed on a regular basis and always with Kendall 20-50. The plugs and wires are new OEM. The air cleaner is OEM. Valve adjustment interval is up to date. The engine starts immediately and runs perfect. 7. The Transmission was rebuilt by Jerry Woods in Campbell, Ca. Every single bearing in the box was changed with an OEM German bearing. All syncros and dog teeth were also replaced. A new clutch and resurfaced flywheel were also installed at the same time. The car features a factory original limited slip differential and a Porsche 935 8/41 Ring and Pinion. Redline synthetic oil was used for refill. The linkage might need to be adjusted because the car occasionally jumps out of reverse if you don't hold the shifter in the reverse position. There is zero rust. The car was always garaged. The car was never raced. The car was never smoked in. Auction includes all receipts and owners manual. Auction also includes original factory car cover. Every item on the car works as it was originally designed to do including the Lights, A/C and the sunroof. This car was dynoed at 390 HP to the wheels and the car only weighs 2950lbs. Combine that with the low ratio 8/41 935 racing ring and pinion and you have a wickedly fast car that can handle the power. The 0-60 time measured by a performance meter is 3.4 seconds. It accelerates like the hand of god throwing you forward and occasionally discharges a flame out of the wastegate pipe upon upshift so if you don't like flame spiting insane fast cars than this is no the car for you. It was a difficult decision to sell this car because I absolutely love it. I realize that I will not be able to recoup the money that I have in this car but I do think that this is one of the nicest 930's on the planet so the reserve price is set accordingly in the low 30s. I'm am realistic about its value but I won't let it go for less than what I think its worth. Good luck bidding and email me with any questions.
