Vehicle Detail
A modern homage to Honda’s early Grand Prix road race bikes, two editions featuring race-only 50cc Honda motors with double-overhead camshafts and a 14,500-rpm redline is a masterpiece in miniature. A miniature masterpiece, the CB50 Dream was conceived to commemorate Honda’s early racing history in the ‘tiddler’ class. The Japanese company had already proved itself equal to the European opposition, winning the 250cc and 125cc World Championships in 1961, before introducing its first works offering in the 50cc category in 1962. That was the RC110 which, although outclassed at Grand Prix level by Suzuki’s rival two-stroke, provided the basis for a hugely successful over-the-counter racer for privateers – the CR110. Introduced part way through the 1962 season, the single-cylinder CR110 featured gear-driven twin overhead camshafts and four tiny valves, producing its maximum power output of 8.5bhp at 13,500rpm, while there were eight speeds in the gearbox. Introduced in 1997, its modern equivalent - the CB50 Dream - produces 7.0bhp at 13,500rpm with maximum revs a further 1,000 up the scale, despite using chain drive for the cams. The gearbox is a six-speeder and the Dream weighs in at an anorexic 157lb dry. Immensely popular in Japan, the Dream 50 has been produced in various versions over the years, spawning an entire cottage industry of accessory and component suppliers. Honda Racing Corporation (HRC), which builds the CB50 Dream, lists a host of performance enhancing improvements for the model. Once built, this Dream 50 was brought by the Japanese Riders Club magazine to the Isle of Man to be photographed. Riders Club wanted pictures of the bike in motion taken at the very place where Honda’s legendary tiddler racing success was born – the 37-mile Manx road course. Rather than return to Japan, this CB50 was acquired by ‘classic’ moto journalist/racer Alan Cathcart, in whose collection it remained until purchased by the current vendor. Included with sale are manuals, original factory paperwork, magazine articles and UK registration. SOLD ON A BILL OF SALE ONLY. THE ONLY REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS ARE UK ISSUED IN THE FORMER OWNER, ALAN CATHCART'S, NAME. THERE IS NO US TITLE. THEREFORE USA REGISTRATION/STREET USE IS NOT PERMITTED. AS FAR AS TITLE AND REGISTRATION, PLEASE DO NOT ASK "BUT WHAT ABOUT..", BECAUSE THERE ARE NO IFS ANDS OR BUTS! NO TITLE. BILL OF SALE ONLY. I strongly encourage people interested in the bike to view it, if possible, before bidding. There are no returns, no warranties expressed nor implied and the motorcycle is sold AS IS, WHERE IS. If you plan to ride it be absolutely certain a thorough inspection and recommission of the motorcycle is performed before riding it. I have one negative review, which I encourage you to see. Its from a local who lives less than 30 mins from the location of a bike he bought on ebay. The buyer appeared and placed the winning bid in the final 10 seconds of the auction. No questions. No inspection. Ignored the paragraph above. After he unloaded the Yamaha FJ1100 out of his truck, he put on a helmet, started it and blasted on to a California freeway. If he had inspected his bike, he would have noticed that over compression of his ratchet straps to keep a heavy motorcycle weighing close to the same as the little short-bed pick up truck, caused his old fork seals to pop. Not fun to discover the first time you hit the front brake. Not only was the bike unregistered and uninsured, he'd never owned nor ridden an FJ1100 (an obnoxious gnarly heavy beast) and did not look over the bike. Nor did anyone else...that would have noticed the obvious to see fork oil running down its tubes. My brand's reputation is important but the buyer's life is much more important...don't be that guy. (he's fine, btw). So to be crystal clear: The motorcycle is being sold as is, where is, and there is absolutely no warranties expressed nor implied. Judge the photos and make your own assessment of the bike's condition, rather than rely on my opinion and/or description. These are my personal opinions and description however the photos are the governing condition report for the purpose of deciding whether and how much to bid. Bidders are also invited and encouraged to view the motorcycle prior to bidding. It is located in Venice, California and can be easily arranged. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer, as is titling the motorcycle if that is new owner's preference. I will of course assist in any way I can; but for absolute clarity, this is the buyer's responsibility. Buyers with under 10 or any negative feedback must contact me prior to bidding and get my ok before submitting a bid. Otherwise, your bid will be cancelled and you will be blocked. Motorcycle is being sold by New York City Motorcycles - nycmc dot com - therefore bidders should consider not waiting until the final moments of the auction to put their best bids forward. The bike will be available through other channels, including New York City Motorcycles very active social media platform on instagram (@newyorkcitymotorcycles). If a fair offer received outside of ebay is greater than the current high bid at the time, the auction will be ended early. I'm listing the bike as a no reserve auction to let the public decide the true value of this exceptional motorcycle. Non-USA buyers are welcome but MUST handle all country-specific import requirements, including any and all fees, taxes, tariffs and import duty. Be sure you can import the vehicle and know the additional expense before bidding! Your bid is binding. Be certain of finance, paperwork and shipping before bidding. Please don't bid until all consideration is given to completing the purchase per the terms specified. If additional questions or photos are required, just ask.
