Vehicle Detail

1971 BMW R50/5 500cc twin. Manufactured 2/71. Matching numbers. Clear Illinois title in my name. This is a nice bike that starts easily and runs well. It is stock except for the addition of an Easy-Clutch and a Brown-style side stand. It has 45,800 miles and climbing. This bike is too much fun not ride before it leaves. Gas tank is in great shape, but there is one ding on the right side. It has also been relined at some point. It is not correct for a /5, but from a /6. I never changed it because it’s in nice condition and looks good on the bike. Front fender is very good original paint, but with a few “age spots”. Rear fender and tail light are excellent repaint with proper pinstriping on fender. Frame and other black bits are very good with a few touch-up spots. Seat is excellent with one small tear developing where it contacts the tank. Exhaust and mufflers are excellent. Professional work in October 2017 includes: new Continental tires (RB2 front, K112 rear), new battery, and carbs balanced. The pushrod tube seals have been replaced, but there is still a very slight oil leak at right cylinder. No drips – just a slight oil wash on the case. The diode board was replaced a few years back. Carbs were professionally rebuilt about 9 years ago and the accelerator pumps replaced a few years after that. No other work has been needed. However the tachometer just died! But the speedometer and odometer still work just fine. Fluids are current. I’d recommend an oil change in the fall before storage and then drive fluids next year – depending on miles ridden. All in all, this is a very nice bike. It does have a few quirks, but that can be expected from a 47 year old machine. More importantly, it really needs nothing. Jump on it and go. This is probably the smoothest running BMW you will ever ride. Ok, now all the fine print: Local inspection is welcome. If you know someone in the Chicago area or want to use one of the inspection services, let me know. A $100 NON-REFUNDABALE deposit is due at close of auction. Balance is due within 10 days. Please contact me before making full payment. Payments must clear before bike can be picked up. Buyer is responsible for shipping. Arrangements must be made within 10 days. I will gladly work with your shipper. I would strongly recommend enclosed transport with a reputable shipper. It’s a nice bike - don’t cheap out on the shipping. I have shipped a few bikes over the years and have some stories… Because of that, I will insist that the shipper use chocks or similar. I will not let them leave with the bike on one of the kickstands! Overseas buyers are blocked. I will unblock individual buyers with proof of a shipper. Last of the fine print: Sold as-is, where is, as-seen and whatever else applies to a used bike. No warranties are expressed or implied. Please let me know if you have any questions or want to talk about it. I have done my best to give you a complete description but I may have overlooked something. Call me out if I have forgotten anything. Thanks for looking! More photos at: http://s286.photobucket.com/user/steves-garage/library/1971%20BMW%20R50%20slash5
