Vehicle Detail
With much reluctance, I am putting my beloved Honda CB77 SuperHawk up for sale. This is a 1966 Honda CB77 SuperHawk, and has been owned by me for the last 14 years. It's been dubbed 'Japan Meets Britain', and has been a fixture on the Honda305 online forum for the last 11 years. It's been featured on the Petrolicious website, on DoTheTon, has been in Classic Bike Magazine, the AMA Magazine and was featured as part of their Vintage Motorcycle Days online promotions, it has been in Cafe Racer Magazine, has been an award winner at Mid-Ohio twice, the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group's annual show twice, plus a number of awards at the annual Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Show at White Rose in Pennsylvania. It's been ridden to Mid-Ohio from Baltimore three times, and to Toronto, Ontario, Canada once. In short, this is a beautiful, unique SuperHawk that is meant to be ridden. Here is a rundown of what has been done to the bike and its current state: -BoreTech 358cc Big Bore Kit, rings, wrist pins, teflon buttons-Compression 185psi (left) and 190psi (right)-NOVA UK 5-speed road transmission (required removal of the kickstart assembly). Very few made!-Custom-modified right engine cover to eliminate the hole for the kickstart shaft/lever -- much cleaner!-Kibblewhite CB350 valve springs with APE titanium caps, head ported, polished and decked (all work, including valve job done by Larry Ladd, Ladd’s Porting, Elkridge, MD)-Amal 626 R300 Mk1 Concentric Carbs w/hardened anodised slides, brass drain plugs-Norman Hyde TOGA 'Gold Star' mufflers w/Cobra clamps-Frank's Engineering fork tubes w/Triumph external springs and custom aluminum collars, progressive internal springs-Rick's Motorsport Electrics stator and voltage regulator-NOS rotor (earlier version without the 'L' stamped on it)-Excel Takasago alloy rims w/custom red coachlines and black centers, stainless spokes-Custom hand-painted checkered stripes on tank and fenders-Custom hand-painted 'roadrunner' on custom chainguard, custom hand-painted decoration on side covers-Charlie's Place electronic ignition-Speedometer is an NOS replacement-Bill Selby Equipment 'bacon cutters' for CB77 (try finding another set!)-Vintage (NOS) Stadium England bar-end mirror-Magura clutch and brake levers - without mounts for mirrors, so much cleaner-Modified gas cap from a CB350 and extended filler neck -- so now it doesn't leak fuel like every other SuperHawk out there!-Tank was completely cleaned and coated on the inside.-Altette style horn-Pedestrian slicer from pre-unit Triumph, custom 'SuperHawk' lettering-Upper shock knobs from Norton Commando-K&N air and vent filters-Hagon shocks-Barnett clutch and clutch springs-Tsubaki 520 chain w/15-30 520 sprockets (Sprocket Specialists)-John Tickle headlight brackets-All chrome work done by Brown's Chroming, Paducah, KY.-Heidenau tires (3.25x18 rear, 2.75x18 front)-Custom white piping on replacement seat cover (piping done by Joe's Upholstery, Frederick, MD)-CYB steering damper setup-MotoBatt MB9U battery w/battery charger plug-in cable-H4 replacement headlight bulb conversion-LED taillight conversion-'Rocky' sidestand-Granturismo 'Flash' grips-PJ Speedos handlebar mount for a pocket watch (and a fully-functioning 1960 Ingersoll Triumph pocket watch is currently installed)-Vintage RAC badge (I think this one dates to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, so a bit older than the bike)-Vintage (NOS) dealer badge from The Brook Motorcycles, Chatham, UK-Cappellini oil filter conversion kit. Uses a Suzuki paper oil filter.-6mm Cappellini oil pump.-Cappellini crankcase breather.-Custom-machined oil-drain plug-All new seals and gaskets throughout-Wheel rims painted 'Vincent Black Shadow' style (black in the middle, red on the edges)-Bike comes with its tool kit and original owner's manual - some original tools, some not, tool pouch made by my wife! -Many NOS parts and custom tweaks -- too many to remember! When I bought this bike, it was in bone-stock condition (I bought it from the original owner in 2004). I had an idea to take the 'best' of Japan and meld it with the 'best' of Britain (as well as to create a 'narrative' around it), and this is the result. Basically I came up with the concepts/ideas and had the very best people execute the work for me. The bike had 4,000 original miles when I bought it, and it now has about 33,000 miles on it. Always stored in climate-controlled conditions. It's been a 14-year 'art project' and labor of love. The same mechanic (John Grainger of J. Howard Cycles) has been working on it all these years. Custom paint by Lee Hulteng. The head has less than 1,000 miles on it, the big-bore kit and transmission have about 12,000 miles (cylinders were recently re-honed), valve springs, rings, Teflon buttons have less than 1,000 miles, clutch has less than 1000 miles on it, voltage regulator is almost new, electronic ignition is almost new, battery is 4 months old. The top end is pretty much new. The wheels on this bike are just about the prettiest you're ever going to find on a SuperHawk. Runs beautifully and strong — a bona fide ton-up rider. The sound that comes out of the Norman Hyde/TOGA Gold Star mufflers is potent -- this bike is truly a mouse that roars. Ride this bike on the twisty backroads and your friends will have a hard time keeping up with you on their bigger bikes. The bike is definitely not a trailer queen and was built to be ridden. It does have some minor marks in the paint and chrome here and there, as well as some very gentle 'patina' throughout, but they come by it all honestly and make no apologies. Guaranteed it's a show-stopper wherever it goes. I've been asked in the past about the NOVA 5-speed transmission, and why I switched from the stock 4-speed to the 5-speed. I had heard about the NOVA 5-speed transmission on the Honda305 online forum some years ago. I've done a lot of backroad riding with this bike, but I also do a fair amount of riding on the Interstates and Beltways (yes I am a brave soul!). As the time I felt that the stock 4-speed transmission wasn't quite up to the task of maintaining highway speeds for an extended period of time, and the 5-speed road transmission from NOVA UK seemed like an attractive option. The addition of the 5-speed required the removal of the kickstart assembly, which really wasn't a big deal to me. It was a small sacrifice for what I consider to be a huge gain. I also had a spare engine side cover modified so that it eliminated the hole for the kickstart shaft (much cleaner than simply sticking a rubber plug in the hole). The 5-speed utterly transformed the bike and the way I ride it. The bike is much more flexible on the road and much better on the highway (in 5th gear it’s turning 6000rpm @ 80mph). It's also the perfect complement to all the other work I've had done on the bike (big-bore kit, head work, Amal carbs, electronic ignition etc etc). I believe the transmission I have from NOVA is the 5th one they made for CB77’s, and it retailed for over $2700 USD when I purchased it. I have more money in this bike than I care to admit (probably the equivalent of a fully restored Vincent Rapide in #2 condition - no kidding), the opening bid price is a small fraction of my investment, but I have truly enjoyed this bike and hope the next owner has the same enjoyment. This bike has a clear Maryland title in my name and, if you're in the Baltimore area, is available for inspection (sorry no test riders, but I'd be happy to demonstrate). Professional inspections are also welcomed. The bike can definitely be shipped domestically or internationally, but you will need to make your own shipping arrangements and at your cost. I can help out however I can at this end. A $500, non-refundable deposit is due within 24 hours of the auction's completion, and payment in full within 7 days. Paypal, cashier's cheque (must clear first), money order or cash in person. All sales final, and bike is sold in 'as-is' condition.
