Vehicle Detail
In the early 80's, I rescued this old Spitfire from rusting to death. I was then in my early 40's and my son was about 16 years old. We made the old car into a "project". We totally disassembled it, took the body off the frame and had it cleaned and painted (the frame). There was considerable rust in the front floor boards and in the trunk. I had new sheet metal installed in the rusted out areas. We had the engine completely overhauled with all new parts and had the body painted by a local body man who was just getting started in the business (see the last photo, taken in 1985). The car was originally white, but he painted it red. It wasn't long before my son discovered girls and the restoration project took a back seat. Over the next few years I continued working on the car. I put a new top on it and made a deal with a company in Joplin, Mo. to put a new interior in it. I drove it down there (60 miles) and left it for them, but after a few months realizing they were not going to get it done, I went back down and drove it home.It wasn't much longer before business interests took over most of my time and the old Spitfire went back into storage. For about 12 years I lived in Texas. I hauled the car down there and it sat out on my driveway under the unmerciless hot sun and the red paint blistered and cracked. Seven years ago I hauled it back to Kansas where it has been parked. I got it out this past spring and put in a new battery, coil and spark plugs, and with the help of a little starting fluid and some gas line repair it started right up. I had to put a new float in one of the carbs and a wheel cylinder kit in the right-rear wheel. I had a new exhaust system installed. But, as other interests have consumed my time, I have decided at age 77, I do not have the same passion to complete the restoration. So, I have decided to sell the car. Here is a good, straight running Spitfire, Mk II with a like new rebuilt engine that has less than 500 miles on it. It starts and purrs like a kitten. It has a four-speed transmission that shifts perfectly. All the guages work (speedometer is not hooked up). Windshield wipers work and most of the lights work (they all worked 30 years ago). Brakes are good and it has one new tire (the other three are weather cracked with good tread). The car was evidently in a minor collision as the front bumper was gone when I got it. I have replaced the bumper with a Mk III bumper and the bumper guards are missing (I have the Mk III guards, but they fit upside down, and I don't like the way they look). I have bolted the bumper on with the original brackets and my intention was to weld the brackets, but I haven't done it. There must have been some damage to the front lip of the bonnet as there is body putty there. All the rest of the car shows no physical damage. It looks like the trunk had a rust spot in the lower right hand corner as there is some body putty there also. Some other things the car needs (not inclusive):Gas tank has small leak in right hand rear cornerCheck and repair lightsHook up speedometerTransmission has a "whine" in it (maybe low on grease)Needs new gearbox coverSeats need rebuilding or replacedNeeds new bushings in front end and alignmentThree new tiresNew carpeting and panelsNew paintGlass in both mirrorsNew windshield rubberNew topClutch master cylinder is suspectProbably other items as well (seatbelts, etc.)The car sells "as is, where is" with no warranty. Buyer is responsible for shipping. I will help load. I have a "clear" title.
