Vehicle Detail

I am starting with a very low opening bid price on this very good running 1996 Lexus LS400 with No Reserve. I can't image it not selling. The opening price is less than what you would pay for a clunker, and with a little work, this will be a decent dependable car. You all will ultimately decide what it is worth through the bidding process. Please read all the information provided below. Despite the somewhat high mileage (261,292 miles as this is being written) the engine runs smooth, it doesn't burn oil, and the transmission shifts flawlessly. If you are familiar with the Lexus V8 engine, this probably won't surprise you the engine and transmission are solid. While I will provide further details below, the biggest problems with it are: 1) The right front strut (similar to shocks) is shot. It bottoms out in pot holes, and it rattles when braking to a stop. That said, it would be recommended to replace both front struts at the same time, and probably the rear shocks as well. 2) It also has a power steering leak. I really don't know where the leak is coming from, but it is necessary to periodically add power steering fluid (though the Lexus specifies ATF for use in the power steering system). As long as it has enough fluid, the steering is fine. All that said, if you are willing to do some mechanic work yourself, you could probably end up with a bargain. My daughter drove it daily until about two weeks ago when she bought a new car. I am not the original owner, but I have owned this vehicle for 10 years and maintained it pretty well when I drove it. My daughter began driving it about 2 years ago, when I got a truck. She recently got married, and got a new car, and neither of us now needs it. I used to do my own repairs, but I am getting too old to crawl under cars anymore. So, I am selling as is. First the Good:Really, this car runs good. Except for the shock and leak, I wouldn't be afraid to drive it on a long trip.It has never been in a major accident. It has a power sunroof/moonroof, and it has never leaked. It's kind of fun.The headliner is essentially flawless. It has Michelin tires with good tread. It has a real spare. It looks pretty nice for it's age.The brakes are fine. The engine compartment is very clean.Air conditioning and heat both work good.It has a 6-disk CD changer/player and cassette player that both work well.I have replaced the rack and pinion, water pump, timing belt and probably a few more things in the last 2 years. The Bad:The struts need to be replaced. The power steering leak needs to be fixed. There is a missing piece of "trim" previously mentioned. I always intended to find one in a junkyard somewhere, but it never climbed up high on my priority list. There are small nicks (stone bruises) in the paint here and there. It's not perfect, though it is pretty darn good for its age. There is a scuff on the bumper. The only minor accident it has been in that I am aware of was a slight scrape that knocked off a piece of trim (see 2nd to last photo) There is a small spot of rust behind the right rear wheel (see last photo)At one point the power steering wheel adjustment quit working. I found out it was a stripped plastic gear internally. Since my daughter was driving it, and not selfish me, I just fixed it into a good average position. It works perfectly fine for me, 6'-0" tall, and my daughter, 5'-6". The LCD on the stereo system is faded and hard to read. The leather drivers seat is getting a little rough and does have a tear in it.The carpet has some stains.Every once in awhile, the speedometer goes out, but it always comes back on later. Please only bid if you intend to purchase. A $300 deposit (PayPal) is required to be made within 24 hours after winning the bid, or I reserve the right to sell to the next highest bidder. The balance should be paid within 1 week unless other arrangements are agreed upon. Buyer is responsible for pickup.
