You are viewing a very well kept Pacer that survived the test of time! I found it on craigslist about 20 miles from my hometown this past summer. I bought it from the grandson of the original owner who bought it new in 1976 at Mierley Motors here in Altoona PA. Since the owner’s passing, it was stored in a dry warehouse for about 20 years. About 10 years ago it was moved to another warehouse, which at that time their family mechanic renewed some of the fluids and installed a new master cylinder. When I bought it this past summer, I had it towed to my mechanic who drained the gas tank and put in fresh fluids wherever needed, and made took whatever other measures he felt were necessary prior to starting it. The car fired right up with no odd noises, smoke, etc. He also replaced the wheel cylinders. The brake hoses, and shoes/pads looked OK.
I have driven it about 50 miles since getting it back on the road. It drives nicely, although the tires are still the old bias ply type and should probably be replaced due to age. Surprisingly they ride fairly decent! The engine purrs like a kitten and transmission shifts like it should. There are 2 schools of thought regarding the tranny fluid on a car this old: some say change it; some say not to unless you plan to rebuild it first. The tranny was never rebuilt so I opted to leave the fluid unchanged. My mechanic did add a lubricant additive to the transmission as a precautionary measure…he said it was compatible with the old fluids/tranny’s and would not hurt it. It runs great just the way it is – no leaks or slipping.
The body is amazing considering the age and the area we live. It is very safe to say this car did not see much salt based on the condition of the body and underbody. I don’t believe the body has any bondo. If it was subject to much salt this would not be the case! The chrome is very nice, although upon close inspection you can see some minor pitting. The glass is all good. Body is solid, no bondo, but has a little surface rust behind the right front mudflap and a little surface rust along the bottom of the passenger side. No holes though. It appears that the car has had some paint work – I noticed some overspray on the driver side door jamb along with around the rubber boots at the rear bumper. I don’t think the whole car has been repainted though. There are some minor dings/scratches here and there but nothing major. There is a long scratch on the hood that is noticeable up close. I’m guessing someone slid a box or something across the hood at some point when it was in storage. But the paint still shines bright and looks great. No significant orange peel to speak of, or any paint runs. (Keep in mind the original paint on these cars were not great when new….there is no original paint job that compares to the show quality paint jobs of restored cars or new cars today!). I would say the paint is consistent with the condition as found when new, minus the flaws mentioned beforehand.
The interior is still in good shape overall. There is a small tear on the left bottom side of the driver seat (see picture), and when you flip the front seatbacks forward you can see where the vinyl material has separated in the area between the cushion and the frame of the seat. This is cannot be seen unless you flip the seatbacks forward. The seat cushions themselves are almost flawless and evidence of the low mileage. The door panels are still in good shape, with minor fading from the sun. The dash pad has no cracks, nor do the arm rests. The carpets are clean but the driver side carpet appears to have been chewed significantly by a mouse underneath the floor mat. That is the worst part of the interior; overall the interior is pretty much amazing. I should mention that the windshield leaks…I noticed when I washed the car the driver side floor got wet. It might just be a matter of putting some silicone caulk behind the stainless trim around the windshield.
The rear hatch area is clean. There is no rust to speak of. Even the spare tire well is solid. Floor pans appear to be solid as is the entire underbody. When the car was new it had a special undercoating applied made by Quaker State, as indicated on the driver door jamb. I noticed the jack is missing from the spare storage area.
Unfortunately, when I cleaned the engine compartment, a lot of the paint on the valve cover came off in the process. I also got the insulation wet (on the underside of the hood) which came apart, so I had to tear it off entirely…it could not be saved. The heater hoses are date-stamped 246-75, which thankfully survived my pressure washer but it’s now harder to read (see picture). The radiator hose is probably also original, as it is stamped “American Motors” as well.
This car is fun to drive, and gets more looks and “thumbs up” than any other car I’ve owned! It is a part of the American car heritage, and certainly underappreciated until recent years. The mileage is stated as “actual” on the title, I can only assume it is correct. I believe the pictures well represent the condition of the car. I don’t think you’ll find any surprises with this car upon your personal inspection. To be inspected for PA safety inspection, it will need a ball joint, rear tires, and probably an exhaust pipe. Also, the gas gauge does not work. It probably needs a new sending unit. The car can sit for several days at a time without any leaks on the garage floor.
