Vehicle Detail
Bought this Porsche in 2009 with 67,000 miles on it from a older guy here in Tennessee. It was bought brand new from the Nashville TN Porsche Dealership. I drove it for a few years and then put it away for a few years until son got his license. I put new clutch $1,800, alternator $400, convertible top $1,100, tires $700, and found some real nice seats out of a car from New Mexico and installed them $750. The old ones were showing wear and had scuffs new ones are 9.5 nice. New ignition switch and mechanism to locking steering wheel June 2016 $1,500. (OUCH on that one) But it's new now.Kid drove it for a few months and when the alternator went out, it died on road, he and school resource officer pushed it to get it off road. Unfortunately he, lacking experience, forgot to leave key on and locked steering wheel while hand pushing it. It rolled into a guardrail and popped front passenger corner. See photo's. Now it has started running warm. Not leaking coolant but driving it for 30-45 minutes the temp starts getting to the 190-200 range which is safe, but not optimum. 4 years and 5,000 miles ago I put a new Porsche installed water pump on it ($1,400) so I don't think that water pump is bad, It was a factory new Porsche water pump not after market junk. I'm pretty sure the pump isn't the issue but I think maybe thermostat needs replaced at this point because the hot air from the heater comes and goes which usually indicates a thermostat. It's going to cost me $2,800 bucks to repair body and paint the car and Porsche wants $600 to install a $50 thermostat. Unless you work on these yourself the Porsche dealers will break you eventually. If you want a good starter Porsche and like to work on your own vehicles, parts are massively available and 1997-2002 will interchange. It needs odds and ends but the basics are there, I've put $5,000+ in it in the last year, and it's driveable with a clean title since I didn't report anything on it to my insurance carrier. It really is pretty minor damage as shown by pictures, not airbag deploy or anything like that. Porsche parts being what they are, at retail places, it's expensive to have a body shop fix. This would make a great starter Porsche for someone. Or an outstanding Father / Son a project if you have some basic skills and a decent place to mess with this. Pelican Parts says the thermostat is < $50 and since your doing it a new water pump is $125,00 if needed but I doubt it. It cheap enough, IF you do it yourself. THE CAR DID NOT OVERHEAT AND HAS NO SMOKE OR ANY OIL / COOLANT MIX ISSUES. It's fine but is running warmer than it should. At some point you just say, enough. I don't want to sink more money into this car. So I'm going to sell it. I've got 6 other vehicles and this one isn't a priority any longer. If you need a good engine / trans with a new clutch (Porsche Installed cost me $1,800) this is a good running Porsche that has ALWAYS been serviced at Porsche Dealer. If you are a body guy you could probably get salvage parts (Fender, Light Unit, Bumper Cover) for $700 - $1,000 and put it back right. Blue Book on the car in fair to good shape is $8,000 - $10,000. You can see them out there for $6,000 - $7,000 with 150,000 to 200,000 plus miles and questionable engines and transmissions. These cars are rated higher reliability that TOYOTA's. Seriously, google it. Really great cars and fun as hell to drive. I've got a LOW reserve on this car and it's a pretty good buy at that price. If my reserve isn't met I'm going to part it out. The motor transmission alone will go for $3,000+ I will help arrange shipping if you need it.
