Vehicle Detail

A 1957 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, now for auction on eBay! California Original 1957 Cadillac Coupe de Ville Please wait a few moments while our high-resolution photos load. 1957 was a great year for Cadillac. With chief designer Harley Earl's reign about to end, the division managed to design and build some of the cleanest, most well-balanced luxury automobiles ever to come out of Detroit. Among aficionados, the '57s are thought to be the quintessential Cadillacs, not the garish '59s. Retaining strong design cues like gullwing front bumpers topped by rubber-tipped Dagmars, eggcrate grilles, and the final evolution of Earl's original tailfin style, '57 Caddys were voluptuous but not excessive. Mouse Over the Photos to Enlarge. A resident of the Golden State all of its life, this '57 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe de Ville is a true survivor. For close to 60 years, it was used as a stylish means of transportation here in sunny Southern California, without having ever been restored. The Caddy comes with the original 1957 manuals, a 1957 color chart, a large 1957 fold-out color brochure, and a stack of older California registrations. Matching its impressive stature, the Cad is powered by its factory original, 365 cubic inch Kettering Vee Eight with no less than 300 horsepower. They say there is no substitute for cubic inches. Right they are! The engine purrs like a happy kitten, simultaneously convincing neophyte drivers with gobs of torque from idle to redline. There are no annoying fluid leaks, no untoward noises, nor is there any ill-mannered behavior to report. Perfectly rust and accident free, the voluminous body is as straight as it gets, free of dents, dings, scrapes or bubbles of any kind, with perfect shut lines throughout. Repainted once, the Seafoam Green paint on the body is faded from exposure to the California sun, the contrasting darker green metallic roof still sparkles. There are a couple of shallow dents in the roof. Not a restored show car, this Cadillac possesses something money can't buy: character. The interior is as delivered back in '57 and displays a lovely patina. Headliner is original and has just one open seam. Caddy's dash is lavishly accented by chrome trim. Gauge cluster displays a beautiful symmetry, reminding us of the good old days, long before the General's accountants completely plasticized even the cars once considered to be The Standard Of The World. Aside from the speedometer, gauges and the lights work as they should, as do power windows and power seat. The Wonderbar AM radio still turns on, but there is no sound - it might need a new speaker. Details, from left to right: instrument panel, original fabric and leather, radio and clock. Beautifully aged like a favorite baseball glove, the seat fabric and some of the leather trim show their age, but that would be no reason for us to perform major surgery. An old car has to be allowed to age gracefully, and that's what happened here. Power seat and power windows all work as they should. Equally well-preserved: the rear bench seat with fold-down center armrest. The green machine wears current California license plates with a 2016 registration sticker. How cool would it be to tow a vintage Airstream Bambi behind this classic American cruiser? Bigger is better, we all know that, and this trunk swallows loads of stuff. Original mat may be stained but underneath, the trunk floor is rust free! Caddy's undercarriage is all original as well. It's perfectly healthy and dry, displaying just a hint of oxidation to the unpainted surfaces. Driving the Cadillac is truly an adventure. Its impact on other motorists and pedestrians in the 21st century is incredible. Everybody loves the car and rarely can we park it and walk away without having to engage in a friendly conversation about it. The car silently surges forward with ease, shifts imperceptibly, glides on tarmac like an oceanliner on water. With its burbling dual exhaust, it even sounds like a big yacht. Infinitely superior to today's faceless "insert tab A into slot B" tin boxes, driving a 1950s Cadillac is a sublime experience. How many of these fine Cadillac 2-door hardtop coupes have been used as intended for close to 60 years, always serviced when needed, but never taken apart and restored? This true survivor starts on the button, runs and drives heavenly, and will most likely continue to do so for decades to come. Tires are new, brakes are fine, so change the oil every 3,000 miles and it'll keep on going! Just like Jay Leno, we're firm believers that driving a classic car daily is the most rewarding way to enjoy it. If you agree, this fifty-seven could become your preferred mode of transportation!
