When I bought this Westy it was in pretty good shape but the engine was tired so we drove it around for a while like that and then last month I decided to make it my fall project. It took tons of money and work but I'm so happy with the way it turned out. Now that it's all done I want a new project so my wife and I decided we should sell it and buy a sail boat or something for next summer. The reason we bought this one is because it's literally the end of a legacy, half way through 1983 VW stopped making the air cooled engine and they went to water cooled platform. The problem is that all of the water cooled engines blew head gaskets and where extremely unreliable. When we saw this little air cooled VW we fell in love and knew we had to have it. It's lived its whole life right here in Fort Collins, Colorado and was originally purchased right down the road from our house at the VW AUDI PORSCHE dealership. In fact, it has been serviced for years at Rocky Mountain Westy, which is also in Fort Collins. I drove it to Rocky Mountain Westy to buy some parts and the recognized it right away. Here is everything I have done to it in the last 30 days: As I said before the engine was worn out so I called Rocky Mountain Westy and they recommended Painters Grinding in Denver as the best VW engine builder (look them up, they are the real deal) so I pulled out the engine and had painters do a 100% full rebuild. They put in a new crank shaft, new connecting rods, new pistons, new push rods, all new engine seals, all new bearings, new (not rebuilt) AMC heads, new valves, new cams, new cylinders- like I said, it was a full rebuild. I also had them bolt up a new clutch and they sent me home with new injector seals and intake gaskets and exhaust gaskets. Every thing was put back to stock except the engine cooling system was altered a little to keep it extra cool this helps air cooled engines last much longer. I also rebuilt the whole ignition system with a new coil, cap, rotor, points, condenser, and spark plugs. I ohmed the plug wires and they are still good. I also put a new fan belt on it. The pop top seals where old and cracking so I bought all three pop top seals and installed them. The canvas had a patch on it's side so I ordered a new canvas and installed that as well. The passenger rear wall paper was starting to wrinkle and crack from age so I took it all off and recovered it with a short pile berber that matched the interior tones, I gave the same berber treatment to the fold away bed panel for the upper bunk because it had started to wrinkle too. The rear floor carpet is actually pretty nice but holds too much dirt when you're out exploring so I decided to cover it with a dark rich colored floating hard wood floor. If you want to go back to original you can just unscrew the aluminum edging, the original carpet is still intact under the wood floor. The seats and cushions where not bad but still had 30+ years of adventure on them so I removed everything and steam cleaned it, now they look and smell clean and fresh. On the outside I wrestled back and forth with the option to paint it or vinyl wrap it. I have always wanted to learn how to vinyl wrap so that won out in the end. I bought 3M 1080 film which is the very best you can get and took a seminar on vinyl wrapping before I started. All of the exterior trim and accessories had to be removed and the entire surface was cleaned polished and prepped. The wrap turned out really nice and every single person that sees it loves it. If you look close you can find a few flaws but hey, it's my first time! The great thing is that if you want to change colors or repair a panel just peel it off and do it again, it's really kind of fun and satisfying. Vinyl wrap is the answer for people to love to DIY. All of the accessories that came off the outside either got refurbished or replaced and all the screws that hold them on where replaced with marine grade stainless hardware. The diaphragm on the propane regulator had started to leak so I removed the tank and dismantled the whole propane storage system. I replaced the regulator, cleaned and resealed all the connections and sanded and painted the tank and rock guard, now it looks as good as it works. I refurbished the rims and replace the tires with a stock size all terrain tire. The brakes have plenty of life left, and the cv axles are solid and not leaking. I'm sure you know that there is no end to the amount of money you can spend restoring a Westy but I think that mine is now to a point where you can get in and drive any place you want without a worry, plus you will be comfortable and look good as you travel! IMPORTANT!! My brother worked in the fraud department of Wells Fargo for years and thousands of people have been burned in the past by a very official looking counterfeit check.
