Vehicle Detail
1961 Corvair Greenbrier Van - this is kind of a hybrid vehicle in that it is a '61, but has a '64 drive-train and emblems. The original 80 HP engine and 3-Speed transmission were replaced with a 110 HP and a powerglide automatic, which makes a huge difference. When I bought the van (on e-bay of course), it was basically a shell with no interior and a very tired engine and transmission. I bought it because it had virtually little, if any, rust and the body is very solid. It was primered inside and out at the time of purchase and I have since painted it as can be seen in the pictures, but the shop didn't do a very good job. It looks good for a daily driver, which is what I use it for, but is very far from show quality, although I did take second place in Helen, GA one year. It has been a long process but I replaced the original engine with a 110 HP and resealed it with new rings and rod bearings, rebuilt transmission, rebuilt carburetors, new wheels and tires, some new window gaskets, new gas tank and sender, new interior and carpet, new brakes, new interior lights and a homemade headliner (which I think looks pretty good), new battery, new interior door handles and window cranks, new motor mount, new exhaust (muffler & crossover), and the list goes on and on. I also insulated it throughout to make it somewhat quieter. I replaced the engine cover with a much lighter-weight material and is hinged at the back to make it much easier to lift. I have the original cover and an extra front seat that goes with it. It starts right up and runs and shifts very well. It has great heat that will bake you and all the vents work, defroster, front and rear vents. All the lights work including two interior lights that I installed when re-doing the headliner. I live in Charleston, SC, and have driven it to Helen, GA, and the Nationals in Knoxville this past year. There are a few minor problems. It leaks water around the front vent window seals and the rear window gaskets. The front windshield, although there are no cracks, there are minor scratches, but they cannot be felt, so they might be able to be buffed out. This is not the correct mileage because when I changed the engine, I opted for the 100 mph speedometer rather than the 80 mph, which I still have. The pictures for the passenger side almost appear to be really dented up, but it is just the shadows. There is no guarantee of course, but if you see it and do not like it, I'll give you your money back at the time of pick-up less the deposit & listing fee to relist it.
