Vehicle Detail
Just Breathtaking: 1965 Ford Mustang 2+2 Fastback! The term "Pony Car Craze" was coined to describe Ford's incredible success with its Mustang, which spawned a string of imitators from other manufacturers. The '65-'66 Mustang Fastback is regarded as one of the most desirable and iconic Pony Cars of all time, since it was the first one to be successful on the track, in drag racing as well as road racing. Growing up during the free-wheeling Sixties, we were daydreaming of piloting a GT-350 around Riverside International. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Due to its late introduction perhaps, the Fastback was outsold by Mustang Coupes and even Convertibles by a wide margin. It's exceedingly difficult to find an excellent example today that ticks all the right boxes. Too many of these sporty cars were used up, ridden hard and put away wet, or modified beyond the boundaries of good taste. The 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback 2+2 presented here, VIN *5R09A143935*, is one of just 71,303 standard Fastbacks manufactured during the model year. It possesses all the desirable traits of a true collectible. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The car was built at the San Jose, California, Ford plant and spent all its life in the Golden State, mostly in the El Monte area of Southern California. Amazingly, it still wears its original-issue 1965 California black-and-yellow license plates, front and back! This car has never been rusty or abandoned; garaged for many years, it was recently revived by a marque specialist and presents exceedingly well. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Along with an owner's manual, various receipts for parts and labor accompany the car. Over $15,000.00 was spent during the past year to make the Fastback shine like a jewel again! Expenses included new paint, chrome, weatherstripping, a front wiring harness, interior work, wheels and tires, exhaust, water pump, belts, hoses, engine re-seal, tune up, and so on. The rear window displayed some scratches, so it was replaced, too! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Let's now check out this fine Fastback in more detail, starting up front, under the hood. Speaking of which, even the underside of the hood sports a mirror-like finish. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Toothbrush-clean engine bay houses the original A-code V-8 motor, sending 225 lively ponies via Ford's ever-popular Cruise-O-Matic to the rear end, which seems geared for the Autobahn. We took the car up to 100mph briefly on a Ventura county back road and were still accelerating when we decided to reign in our filly. The car is well-equipped, featuring power-assisted steering and brakes, with discs up front. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Engine doesn't have any bad habits, such as leaking, smoking, or -- oil -- drinking. Just recently, the power plant was removed from its home and completely re-sealed and detailed. The fuel system was gone through, from a new gas tank to the factory original, 4-barrel MOTORCRAFT carburetor. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Mustang's exterior looks bone stock, "as delivered," with unmolested coachwork. There are no dings, dents, scratches, or other imperfections to report. There's not the tiniest rust bubble to be found, and the car doesn't look like it ever was in any accident. Silverbluemetallic paint is simply stunning, highly glossy and smooth. Bumpers and chrome trim pieces are either brand new or in excellent condition throughout, as is all of the weatherstripping. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Mustang rolls on a set of brand new "Styled Steel" wheels, a 1965 option, fitted with equally new Toyo radial tires of the dimension 225/60-15. On to the interior! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Dash is 100% stock und looks new. The optional FORD AM pushbutton radio still works, however, the dash speaker might need to be replaced. There have been no unsightly, non-factory speaker holes drilled anywhere. Ash tray and lighter remain unused. This car features the -- optional -- console. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Gauge bezel is new, and everything seems to work. The fuel gauge can be a little lazy at times, even though the sending unit has been replaced. Rally Pak is an original, has been added for looks. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Interior features the optional "Pony" trim. Black front seats with inserts look fantastic, are firm, and still exude some of that new car smell. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Foldable rear seats are large enough for two adults, hence the car's 2+2 moniker. They, too, look brand new. Door and side panels are in excellent condition throughout; all the little, hard-to-find trim pieces and fittings are present. New, correct carpeting has just been installed, front and back. Black headliner looks "as new," too. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) You're ready for a test drive? So are we, but before we take off, let's check out trunk and undercarriage! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Super clean trunk floor is covered by an equally clean factory trunk mat. Jacking equipment and spare are included as well. There has never been any corrosion or other damage in here. Viva California! Underneath, we find nothing but virginal and perfectly healthy sheetmetal. All original floor pans bear no signs of rust or rust repairs of any kind. One cannot overstate the importance -- and near impossibility -- of sourcing a specimen that never saw rust or rust repair when looking for a true "keeper" Mustang fastback. Note all the new parts! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Freshly lubed and tuned, the 'Stang starts, runs, shifts, handles, and stops flawlessly. Power comes on smoothly, without squeaks, burps, or other hiccups. Mash the loud pedal and even the kickdown does what it's supposed to. This is not your granny's rattly, used-up old Mustang; the entire driving experience could be summed up as "fresh." Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Piloting the Fastback puts a big smile on your face. The car is quick, nimble, and easy to handle on all kinds of roads. It never overheats or shows any other weaknesses. Best of all, seeing such a time-warp condition Mustang stops people in their tracks. A first-generation Mustang, especially a gorgeous Fastback like this one, seems to bring out the best in everybody, and you'll enjoy many friendly interactions with admiring folks. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Indeed, driving the Fastback across this great country would present no challenge at all. Whether in Podunk Holler, Nebraska, or Anchorage, Alaska, you'll be able to find reasonably priced parts and affordable expert help, should it ever become necessary. Be it as a cherished reference car to be shown with pride, competitive rallying and touring companion, or well-loved daily driver, this 2+2 will be very satisfying to own. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Here it is, a rare opportunity to acquire one of the cleanest '65 Fastbacks in the West, and perhaps one of the last rust-free, original black-license-plate examples anywhere!
