Vehicle Detail

1932 Ford Coupe. Original 1950's Hot Rod Found: "Touché Away!" See VIDEO. 1932 Ford V8 50's Hot Rod Coupe: "Touché Away!" In 1953, Ernie Martin, a 16 year-old paperboy in Portland, Oregon discovered a derelict 1932 Ford Coupe in a shed. Approaching the owner, he asked to buy the car. The owner was not interested in selling - but he was looking for a bicycle for his son. Ernie offered the man his new Schwinn racing bike. The owner of the Ford could not believe that anyone would trade a new bicycle for an old Coupe, so he jumped at the offer. Ernie Martin became the new owner of the Ford. For the next three years, Ernie spent all of his spare time and money rebuilding the '32 into the hot rod of his dreams. It was painted in brilliant red with a white interior. The old flathead was replaced with a built 265 Chevy V8 and a 1953 Ford rear-end. The result was a car that soon gained a reputation as one of the fastest in Portland. In 1959, the Ford was invited to be displayed at the Portland Roadster Show. And in August of 1960 it was featured in a 4-page photo feature in Rod and Custom magazine. However, shortly before the article appeared, Ernie, who had recently married and had a baby on the way, decided to sell the '32. In the early 1960's, the Ford passed through the hands of several owners, and by 1966 was racing at the Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, Oregon. The '32 had been re-painted in orange, re-upholstered, and now sported a 283 Chevy V8. It was dubbed "Touché Away!" Following its racing career, the car was acquired in 1972 by noted Northwest '32 Ford collector, Jay Hyde. At that time, the early history of the car was unknown. Jay's son and daughter drove the car occasionally, but the '32 was eventually parked in the Hyde's warehouse in Sherwood, Oregon, where it remained for the next 40 years. Recently, following Jay Hyde's passing, his family has decided to sell this piece of hot rod history. The car has a clear, state of Oregon title, issued in 1972 as a "1959 Assembled" vehicle. It remains today much as it was when being raced in the 1960's. The carburetor was recently rebuilt and fuel system checked. With a new battery in-place, it quickly fired back to life. It runs smoothly. The Powerglide automatic transmission shifts easily through all gears. Brakes are adequate for test driving. Previously, during its racing career, the regulator and generator were disconnected. The lights, speedometer and other gauges have also been disconnected but are present. The car should receive complete mechanical service before extensive driving. The interior is the original from the early 1960's and in very good condition. Period black and orange tuck-and-roll vinyl throughout, including the headliner, floorboards, trunk and running board covers, which fit over the original black rubber mats. Windshield is orange tinted plexiglass. Passenger side window is cracked. It still sports the brass exhibitor's dash plaque from the 1959 Portland Roadster Show. The body is ALL HENRY FORD STEEL. The exterior wears the orange and gold paint and finish from the 1960's, with hand-painted lettering and cartoons intact. The artist is unknown but their work has held up beautifully. The original white vinyl top insert, installed duirng Ernie Martin's ownership, is in good condition, with one gouge noted that does not penetrate through the headliner. Please see photos. Recently, through the help of the Woodburn Dragstrip and several friends, Ernie Martin, now 78, was reunited with his old Ford. He was happy to see it again, even with the changes since his ownership 60 years ago. He recognized his original body work and confirmed it was his "baby" which had now grown-up. He filled in all of the story of his acquisition and restoration of the Coupe. The Hyde family would like to pass this car to a new home that will appreciate its history, significance and patina. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic, documented old school '32 Ford Hot Rod Coupe from the golden days of custom cars. A realistic reserve has been placed on this car, in keeping with its rarity. It is truly "one of a kind." Please bid accordingly. WE WILL HAPPILY SELL TO BIDDERS, WORLDWIDE.
