1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Diesel Westfalia This is a beautiful and rare Volkswagen. The diesel Westfalia was only imported to the US for about a year. As you can see in the pictures, it is in very good shape, and it also runs great. This is the full camper version with a stove, sink, and refrigerator and plenty of cabinets. The rear seat folds down to make a bed and a second bed unfolds once the top is up. The front right seat swivels to face the rear seat so that you can get chummy with your fellow campers. I have owned this vehicle for almost 8 years. The previous owner made a couple of upgrades including an 86 Volkswagen Golf engine and a transmission from an 84 Vanagon. The engine had an almost complete rebuild (piston rings, rod bearings, valve shims, timing belt and tensioner, water pump, glow plugs, injectors, head gasket, and all other seals and gaskets), has about 13,000 miles since the rebuild, and runs great. The 86 Golf engine is almost identical to the original except that hydraulic lifters were used instead of solid lifters. The transmission swap is popular for these diesels because the original transmissions were geared very low. This transmission has higher gears making cruising on the highway much more pleasant. The upgrade that I made was to get the fuel injector rebuilt with gaskets that are compatible with whatever is in the newer diesel fuel. I have also had the CV joints replaced, a new radiator installed, and added a new starter. The body is in remarkable condition for a 33 year old vehicle. I have taken close up pictures of a couple of flaws. One is that there must have been some work done on the rear left corner as a crack has developed as shown in the photo. The other is a couple of small rust spots under the rear window that the previous owner had repaired. In the eight years that I have owned the vehicle, they haven’t changed so I think they are stable. The original interior is in excellent condition other than two thin spots on either side of the driver’s seat, pictured. The clock doesn’t work and the gas struts that hold up the rear tailgate door need to be replaced unless you don’t mind using a stick like I have been doing. The previous owner stated that the mileage is close to correct. It may have gotten a few miles while some work was done behind the instrument cluster. The camping gear all works except that the refrigerator is difficult to light in the LP mode. It is a three way frig and will operate on 120 volts while camping, 12 volts while on the road, and on LP when 120 volts is not available. We are at 6500 feet altitude and it might light easier at a lower altitude, but probably needs to be cleaned. The camper includes the original bug screens and two swivel tables. The canvas is in good condition with one small hole that has been patched. The tires are decent although old. The van goes down the road smooth and straight. The steering is tight and the brakes are solid and responsive. If you are interested in one of these vans and are not familiar with them, know that you will not win any races. They were not built for speed and are happiest going down the highway at 55. They were built for good fuel mileage (I got better than 30 mpg on the road), reliability, and a lot of fun and inexpensive camping and traveling. It has a clear New Mexico title. On Jul-15-15 at 07:45:50 PDT, seller added the following information: Note added by seller: I was showing the vehicle to a local, and in my going over everything, I realized that there is a leak that wasn’t pointed out in the above description. There is a very small transmission leak, small enough that I don’t think about it and forgot to include it here. There hasn't been any noticeable change in the transmission level, but there is an occasional drop, silver dollar sized under the car. This is the way it has been for the last eight years so it isn’t getting any worse. Sorry about that missing information, but I want to include it here so you will have an accurate description of the vehicle.
