Vehicle Detail

1972 Beetle 1303 (Super Beetle) Engine size: 1641cc Fuel: standard unleadedManufactured in GermanyColour: Marathon Blue (metallic) I am selling my '72 Super Beetle. I bought this car in 2009 in the UK (where I was living at the time) from the individual who personally restored it from the ground up. The car was fully stripped down and rebuilt about 7-8 years ago including full engine overhaul, new seals, window rubber, sandblasted and repainted. It has been driven less than 6,000 miles since then. In 2010 I moved to Canada and brought the car with me. I shipped the car from Southampton England to Halifax NS in late April 2011 and then drove it the rest of the way from Halifax to Montreal with no issues. I moved to Toronto last month and drove the car from Montreal to Toronto again with no issues. For the last 4+ years, the car has been continuously stored covered in an underground heated garage and only driven occasionally in dry summer weather. It has never been winter-driven in North America. Previously, it was always parked in a garage. Here are some images of the car. More description and details follow below. BodyAs the photos show, the body is in incredible original condition, there is no filler, patches or body welds. The metallic blue paint with clear coat displays beautifully. There are a few tiny nicks and chips here and there from road use but honestly nothing that is visible from more than about 6 inches away. As the images below show, the floor pans are rock solid - There are no perforations or holes anywhere. A small amount of surface blistering has only recently started to appear below the paint in a couple of places: a few inches in the roof rain gutter and at the beading where the front right fender meets the apron near the right headlight (see photos.) There are one or two small welds to the undercarriage which were professionally done years ago and have passed numerous safety inspections since. The doors are perfect with absolutely no rot or corrosion anywhere - both doors close solid and tight - seals were replaced during restoration and are fully intact. All windows work perfectly (right window is a bit stiff on closing.) Interior:The radio is not original and does not work presently. I had planned to replace it but never got around to it. I prefer the sound of the engine when I drive. The inner door panels had 4" speakers installed (not something I would have personally done) and the speaker grills are missing unfortunately but can easily be replaced with new 4" speakers and/or grills and will look good. The seat covers are original. Unfortunately, both front seats have splits on the bottom covers so these would need replacing. I placed 'comfort' pads over the seats to conceal the tears and it looks pretty good since you can't see the rips. (There are no loose coils or springs so the seats are totally comfortable and useable.) Seat backs and rear seat covers are perfect. Roof liner is perfect (see photos) - no rips, stains or significant sagging. Sun visors are original, complete with no rips (though they are a bit bloated from age.) The car has its original and complete factory-fitted rubber floor mats throughout - with no rips or cuts - VERY RARE to still have this intact! The previous owner laid in professional noise-proof matting between the floor mats and the floor pan. Under the front bonnet is a factory fitted carpeted liner mat which is in perfect condition - looks really nice and clean and conceals the spare tire and fuel tank perfectly (see photos.) There are no holes or rust in the tire well - rock solid. The strut towers are 100% original and rock solid with no corrosion or welding (again see photos.) Features:Twin Weber 34 ICT carburetors (genuine! Not Chinese repros!) (The original factory single carb with air filter will come with the car - I kept it just in case)1641cc cylinders (the stock 1600cc cylinders and pistons were upgraded to Mahle (German) 1641cc 87mm cylinders for more horsepower)5.5" wheels (the standard 4.5" wheels were upgraded with VW original equipment wider 5.5" wheels for better handling)EMPI Hurst-style shifter with a trigger reverse lockout and quick shift kit (the quick shift kit reduces travel between gears by up to 40%. (The original stick shifter will come with the car.)Porsche wheel caps (previous owner - not something I chose - easily replaceable with standard VW wheel caps) Mechanics:This car was fully serviced and tuned last September 2014 (oil change (Castrol GTX), new plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, timing etc.) Heat exchangers are solid and and fully functional and push ample heat to the interior floor vents inside the car. About 3 week ago, I had the following items replaced by Peter's Garage in Toronto:Inner left tie rod assemblySteering damper The car has a current valid Quebec registration and is licensed for public road use in the province of Quebec. However the car is currently located in Toronto, Ontario. There are a few things that may need to be done to pass the Ontario Safety Certification - see below. These issues may not affect safety certification in other jurisdictions (please check before bidding.) At time of replacing the left tie rod and steering damper a few weeks ago, the following issues were found by the mechanic: Engine has some 'blow by' which affects power slightlyRear defrost doesn't work (could be wiring, not sure)Insufficient airflow to the front windshield for defogging (may affect safety certification - depends on jurisdiction and inspecting garage)Reverse light doesn't work (easily fixable - I think it's a loose connection - have not had time to fully trace the problem)Windshield washer doesn’t work (This worked for me up until last year then stopped - there is air pressure to the reservoir and the nozzle is clean - so not sure - could be column switch - best solution is to install a pump and switch for about $40 - again, I have not had time to sort this out)Unfortunately, I do not know the original miles on the car. The odometer has most probably gone around at least once (this car definitely has more than 10,543 miles on it!) but I don't know if the speedometer/odometer assembly is the original for the car or if it was replaced at some point by a previous owner. I have some history and records from previous owner. Unfortunately, they're packed away from my relocation and I have not dug them out yet but will definitely provide them when I find them. This beetle runs strong, has decent acceleration and top speed of about 65mph (105 Km/h). Downshifting is definitely necessary on steep hills to maintain speed. Suspension, steering, brakes, exhaust are all good. There are no rattles or shakes whatsoever! Overall:Without a doubt, this car is a major head turner. Everywhere I go with it, I receive thumbs up, shouts, honks and countless personal stories and fond memories conveyed to me by strangers. I even had a gorgeous model photographed with it by a professional photographer when I was shooting for the ebay listing last weekend! The car is in stunning condition with only minor imperfections and a few minor issues that need some attention to get it to show-grade. At 43 years old, this car is not perfect but you would be hard-pressed to find an example that is as clean, original and solid with so little work necessary to get it to show-grade. My reasons for selling are mainly driven by lifestyle changes and no time, space or budget to give this car the attention it deserves. This is the last in a series of vintage VWs I've owned over the course of the last 30 years or so. It's been a life long passion. I guess I've finally outgrown it (though I still love air cooled VWs.) Unfortunately, priorities change in life and I just do not have the time, space or money to spend on this wonderful hobby anymore and it's time to pass this beauty on to somebody new who will cherish and enjoy it. The car comes with some extra parts and accessories including a never used original Bosch 009 distributor in box! (highly collectible), the original single carburetor and intake manifolds, original air filter box, never used genuine NOS official Volkswagen accessory mud flaps (HIGHLY collectible and rare as hen's teeth - would easily fetch $300 or more on ebay), custom car cover for storage etc. So lots of valuable extras are included. Important - Please Read Before BiddingThis is an auction. If the reserve price is met, the winning bidder implicitly agrees to complete the purchase. I therefore strongly encourage all bidders to contact me to arrange a viewing and inspection before you bid. Please ask all questions before bidding. I will answer all serious questions with as much detail as I can and I will accommodate all requests for an in-person viewing. This car is sold as is, as seen and has no guarantees whatsoever. This car may need to pass a government required safety inspection in some countries, states or provinces before a license and registration will be issued by your motor vehicle authority. Please ensure that you have the cash or financing pre-arranged to pay the final price before bidding. Buyer is responsible for arranging the full collection and shipping (including necessary transit insurance) direct from Toronto, Ontario, Canada and all import duties, taxes and surcharges of your home country. If shipping vehicle, risk of loss or damage to vehicle and all contents, parts and accessories is borne by the buyer. I will not entertain any negotiation after the auction closes so please ensure that you are happy with the condition of the car as described and that you are committed to completing the transaction before you place your bid. If you do not honour your bid, I will unfortunately have to open a case with ebay and may ultimately leave you negative feedback so please bid in good faith. It took a lot of time to put all this info and photography together to provide the best possible description of this item. Please respect the good faith of the seller and other serious bidders by honouring your bid if you win. Thank you for reading and good luck if you decide to bid! On Jun-25-15 at 12:50:09 PDT, seller added the following information: Additional information: Listing states: 1641cc cylinders (the stock 1600cc cylinders and pistons were upgraded to Mahle (German) 1641cc 87mm cylinders for more horsepower)5.5" wheels (the standard 4.5" wheels were upgraded with VW original equipment wider 5.5" wheels for better handling)In the Europe, this model was marketed as the Volkswagen 1303. (Super Beetle was a North American model name only.) My understanding from the previous owner was that this car was imported to the UK from Germany at some point. I would need to verify but I seem to recall that the 1303 came with a 1300cc engine and 4.5" wheels as standard. At some point in the mid-1970s (possibly 1975 or 1976) a deluxe version of this model was offered in Europe as the Volkswagen 1303S. The 1303S came with a 1600cc engine and 5.5" wheels as standard as I recall - if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know. The 1303S also had a woodgrain affect laminate on the dash panel and deluxe colour matched fabric seat covers and door panels. The person I bought this car from replaced the stock cylinders with larger 87mm ones (a popular kit upgrade to increase displacement to 1641cc) and added the 5.5" wider Volkswagen wheels. All this only to say that this car might not have started out with 1600cc engine and 5.5" wheels as my original description suggests. I believe his aim was to bring this 1303 up to the 1303S specification. This is not the original colour of this particular car although it is an official Volkswagen Beetle standard colour. The colour was called Marathon Blue and was first offered with the special Marathon Edition standard beetle in 1971 or 1972. It's the nicest colour Volkswagen ever offered for the Beetle in my opinion. The Weber 34 ICT carbs is an upgrade that I did on the car. These carbs were purchased from Eurocarb (www.dellorto.co.uk) and specifically jetted for 1641cc. The car is equipped with a jack and tire iron but they are not the original VW jack and tire iron. There are loads of those out there available for cheap for the completist owner if desired. On Jun-25-15 at 18:26:21 PDT, seller added the following information: overtoomse Store On Jun-29-15 at 19:01:38 PDT, seller added the following information: ***** This Beetle is equipped with DISC BRAKES in front. *****
