Vehicle Detail
This is a No Reserve Auction. For Sale is an almost all original 1983 BMW R80GS in good condition. NOTICE UPDATE! I changed some pics ....~ I installed new fork boots this morning than took the gs for a ride over to Joshua Tree. Shifts better than my '94 R100R and quite smooth on the bars between 60 and 75mph, a little buzz starts at about 80. It has the stock hard grips and endure type tires and I wore no gloves just to see. A little more vibration at slow speeds in town. Decent stopping power up front and plenty of compression braking with the low gearing. The charging light comes on with the key switched on and goes out when you start it. (normal) The battery actually stayed up all week and it started easy. Still would get a new battery. This bike pulls hard and is smooth. If I rode it more I would keep it . Brings big smiles. Dives in the corners great and you can tell it is lighter than other BMWs. As for the new pics: I noticed today a little bend on the top a cooling fin on the left cyl head. Probably could be tweaked back or just leave it alone. I wanted to show the worst corrosion on the bike is the blinker perches on the front and a close up of the bars/mirror area.~... Here's the story: I was living in San Marcos, CA up until 2003. Some time in the late 90s my next door neighbor drives up on this gs. I instantly go next door having owned 2 of these previously and have been an airhead owner since 1984 (Airhead #513). At the time it had a huge saddle on it so I offered him this orange seat I had picked up at Escondido cycle salvage years earlier, but I asked if he was ever going to sell it that I would like first crack. Comes 2009 I get a call that he is ready to sell. Of course now I'm living in CoeurdAlene, ID. I flew down and drove it home in August 2009. I believe I am the third owner. The Bike: This is a great bike, starts easy and runs strong. It has had regular maintenance, but nothing rebuilt. Top end was resealed at the dealer, rubber items and gaskets have been replaced, a new piston in the front master cylinder, fork seals, steering head bearings, light grease on the trans splines, plug wires, It has original starter. I feel it has less than 35,000 miles, The speedo works but the odometer quit around the time I purchased it, I never tripped or commuted to work on this bike other than to Idaho and than back to CA. The odometer can shake around and change from 5000 to 50000 or any other # as you ride. My wife and I travel on a 94 R100R. It came with metzeler street tires, it now has Saharas mounted. It the has original owners manual, tool kit and air pump under the gas tank. When I purchased it the left side cover was missing. I painted and installed a new on. The right side cover has one of the plastic hooks broken off (see pic). The warning light cover on the dash shakes so I slipped some rubber under it. I did not paint over anything on the bike so you could see the original look. It shows age but has not sat outside. It has had service work done by BMW Escondido (Brecht at the time) and by myself. This bike is not a leaker. The only spot that had a small drip was the left valve cover. We sealed the bottom at the time because we did not have a new gasket. It may need to be surfaced. The trans rear gasket dripped onto the collector muffler but has been replaced, interesting enough the gasket from the factory was pushed in on one side and would hardly seal. So far the muffler and collector seem pretty solid. I've seen some before that rust out. The tank has one super tiny ding (check pics) other wise seems straight with some scratches. When cleaning the bike this week I noticed splits at the seam on the right fork boot. I ordered new boots and will install them when they arrive. It does need a new battery so I am offering two options: I will offer a $200 dollar rebate towards a new battery of your choice (in case you would like a new light weight one) or I will purchase a new bmw battery and install it. It comes with a sturdy rack and bag mounts. This bike has been mostly ridden on pavement and maybe a little dirt/gravel roads. This bike comes with no warranty and is sold as is. All sales final. Buyer to arrange for shipping if needed and pay all costs. Please look at pictures closely. My thought is pictures lie. This bike is not perfect. I have limited internet on work days Mon -Thurs but will try my best to communicate. My cell 208-964-6528, Thanks for looking, Dwight
