I purchased it last year from an elderly couple who bought it “used” in 1963. It has 33,670 ORIGINAL miles and is DOCUMENTED on the title. The couple I purchased it from bought the car when it was one year old from the local Oldsmobile dealer in Somerset, PA. Twenty years later, in 1983, they had it titled as a “classic”, which I have a copy of this title. I have no doubt the mileage is correct, given the amazing condition of the car (furthermore, it is documented on the title). This car has many features, including power windows, drivers side power seat, safety sentinel (adjustable speed minder), power trunk release, power antenna, automatic dimming headlamps, power brakes/steering, factory console with mounted factory tachometer, courtesy lights, Wonderbar radio with rear speaker and floor mounted control, and genuine leather interior. Most everything about the car is in beautiful shape. With some very minor exceptions, the car is close to “immaculate”. This is an extremely comfortable car, and one of the most desirable years for the Starfire. It is equipped with the highest performance version of the 394 you could get in 1962, with 345 horsepower. The car runs and drives beautifully and I’m sure it would go across country effortlessly. Exterior: The paint is a beautiful metallic blue and appears to be mostly original and very presentable. In fact, when I first bought it I was fairly sure it was 100% original, but upon closer inspection, I noticed a few areas that appear to have been resprayed many years ago, but they did a good job. Most notably the bottom of the rear quarter panels had some minor repairs, which have held up well considering these repairs were probably done decades ago. The paint on the rocker panel below the driver door has some flaking. The driver door also has a couple areas where the paint lifted because some idiot put tape on it for a parade sign. The paint is very good overall and still very presentable. The chrome and the stainless steel also shine brilliantly. I believe the top is original, and has no tears on the outside. I did not try to clean the roof, for fear of using something overly aggressive I didn’t want to hurt anything. The underbody is extremely solid, rust free, and in great shape, but is not detailed. In fact, the prior owner had an oily/greasy type of undercoating applied many years ago, which was a common practice in many of the mountainous areas of the northeast. I doubt it would take much if someone were to detail the chassis for show purposes, if they want to display with mirrors under the car. According to the prior owner, they never drove the car in the winter during their 51 years of ownership. This is certainly believable considering how clean and rust free the car is. Overall, the exterior is gorgeous and in very good condition. Interior: The interior appears to be 100% original…truly stunning, including 2-tone blue leather seats, which feel, look, and smell like new.….and there are NO air fresheners needed in this car! The leather is soft and supple and has no major cracks. The couple who owned this car were non-smokers. There are no rips, stains or holes. The blue carpets are also very presentable, including the original built-in floor mats. The dash is beautiful, without cracks. The radio works but I am unsure how the Wonderbar operates….it will search for a signal but does not seem to find one, unless you tune it manually. The radio otherwise plays well and has good sound. Everything else seems to work fine too (except the clock, of course). Mechanical: The motor purrs like a kitten and is extremely smooth. As mentioned earlier, the motor is the high-performance 394 “Ultra High Compression” 4 barrel V-8 with the original Roto-Hydramatic 3 speed aka “slim jim” transmission. The transmission shifts as it should and my mechanic said the fluid still looks okay. I recently changed the oil and oil filter, and had my mechanic go over the car to see if anything else needed servicing, which all appeared to be in good working order. The headlights on the drivers side appear to be the original “T-3” type. The bias ply tires are older but they seem to be decent and all match, with plenty of tread. Even the spare matches the rest of the tires. According to the elderly couple these tires were replaced in the 1980’s and have held up well! (They probably only have a few thousand miles on them, which is consistent with the low mileage of the car itself). The car cruises nice on the highway without any shakes or shimmies. The car passed the rigorous PA inspection last summer with flying colors and is valid through July this year. The car tracks straight, suspension is tight, and brakes are silk smooth. The ride is smooth as glass. This baby runs beautifully and is ready for show! Overall: If you are looking for a spectacular example of a very collectible Starfire, this one’s for you. The car is gorgeous and gets lots of compliments. I have yet to see another one just like it. This car is so nice, that most people might say the car is “perfect” or “flawless”. The average person may describe it as such-- but for a car collector, there’s never anything 100% perfect unless it was restored. As such, this is over 50 years old, never restored and has 33,700 miles. Therefore it has some trivial flaws as mentioned in the description. I have sold numerous cars on eBay and in all situations I had positive feedback. I attempt to describe each vehicle as accurately and honestly as possible and I do not think you will be disappointed. 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible / Excellent Condition / 33k documented miles / 1 owner for 51 years / mostly original / 100 pics
With regret I am selling this gorgeous 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible. I purchased it last year from an elderly couple who bought it “used” in 1963. It has 33,670 ORIGINAL miles and is DOCUMENTED on the title. The couple I purchased it from bought the car when it was one year old from the local Oldsmobile dealer in Somerset, PA. Twenty years later, in 1983, they had it titled as a “classic”, which I have a copy of this title. I have no doubt the mileage is correct, given the amazing condition of the car (furthermore, it is documented on the title). This car has many features, including power windows, drivers side power seat, safety sentinel (adjustable speed minder), power trunk release, power antenna, automatic dimming headlamps, power brakes/steering, factory console with mounted factory tachometer, courtesy lights, Wonderbar radio with rear speaker and floor mounted control, and genuine leather interior. Most everything about the car is in beautiful shape. With some very minor exceptions, the car is close to “immaculate”. This is an extremely comfortable car, and one of the most desirable years for the Starfire. It is equipped with the highest performance version of the 394 you could get in 1962, with 345 horsepower. The car runs and drives beautifully and I’m sure it would go across country effortlessly.
Exterior:
The paint is a beautiful metallic blue and appears to be mostly original and very presentable. In fact, when I first bought it I was fairly sure it was 100% original, but upon closer inspection, I noticed a few areas that appear to have been resprayed many years ago, but they did a good job. Most notably the bottom of the rear quarter panels had some minor repairs, which have held up well considering these repairs were probably done decades ago. The paint on the rocker panel below the driver door has some flaking. The driver door also has a couple areas where the paint lifted because some idiot put tape on it for a parade sign. The paint is very good overall and still very presentable. The chrome and the stainless steel also shine brilliantly. I believe the top is original, and has no tears on the outside. I did not try to clean the roof, for fear of using something overly aggressive I didn’t want to hurt anything. The underbody is extremely solid, rust free, and in great shape, but is not detailed. In fact, the prior owner had an oily/greasy type of undercoating applied many years ago, which was a common practice in many of the mountainous areas of the northeast. I doubt it would take much if someone were to detail the chassis for show purposes, if they want to display with mirrors under the car. According to the prior owner, they never drove the car in the winter during their 51 years of ownership. This is certainly believable considering how clean and rust free the car is. Overall, the exterior is gorgeous and in very good condition.
Interior:
The interior appears to be 100% original…truly stunning, including 2-tone blue leather seats, which feel, look, and smell like new.….and there are NO air fresheners needed in this car! The leather is soft and supple and has no major cracks. The couple who owned this car were non-smokers. There are no rips, stains or holes. The blue carpets are also very presentable, including the original built-in floor mats. The dash is beautiful, without cracks. The radio works but I am unsure how the Wonderbar operates….it will search for a signal but does not seem to find one, unless you tune it manually. The radio otherwise plays well and has good sound. Everything else seems to work fine too (except the clock, of course).
Mechanical:
The motor purrs like a kitten and is extremely smooth. As mentioned earlier, the motor is the high-performance 394 “Ultra High Compression” 4 barrel V-8 with the original Roto-Hydramatic 3 speed aka “slim jim” transmission. The transmission shifts as it should and my mechanic said the fluid still looks okay. I recently changed the oil and oil filter, and had my mechanic go over the car to see if anything else needed servicing, which all appeared to be in good working order. The headlights on the drivers side appear to be the original “T-3” type. The bias ply tires are older but they seem to be decent and all match, with plenty of tread. Even the spare matches the rest of the tires. According to the elderly couple these tires were replaced in the 1980’s and have held up well! (They probably only have a few thousand miles on them, which is consistent with the low mileage of the car itself). The car cruises nice on the highway without any shakes or shimmies. The car passed the rigorous PA inspection last summer with flying colors and is valid through July this year. The car tracks straight, suspension is tight, and brakes are silk smooth. The ride is smooth as glass. This baby runs beautifully and is ready for show!
Overall:
If you are looking for a spectacular example of a very collectible Starfire, this one’s for you. The car is gorgeous and gets lots of compliments. I have yet to see another one just like it. This car is so nice, that most people might say the car is “perfect” or “flawless”. The average person may describe it as such-- but for a car collector, there’s never anything 100% perfect unless it was restored. As such, this is over 50 years old, never restored and has 33,700 miles. Therefore it has some trivial flaws as mentioned in the description. I have sold numerous cars on eBay and in all situations I had positive feedback. I attempt to describe each vehicle as accurately and honestly as possible and I do not think you will be disappointed.
