Vehicle Detail

Intro: For your consideration is this very attractive and nicely driving 1978 Porsche 911 SC that has traveled 109,000 miles. 1978 is the first year of the 911 SC which not only gets a bump in horsepower but gets a bullet proof, rock solid engine. This vehicle is in its original specification with the original non-rebuilt, nor needing a rebuild, 3.0L air cooled engine in excellent running condition. There are a couple significant and common drive-ability upgrades like the Carrera tensioners and Turbo valve covers. The black finish shines very nicely on this 911 and the addition of the whale tail spoiler, front spoiler, and Fuchs make for a great combination. This vehicle is from 1978 and has traveled 109,000 miles so it is not a museum piece BUT it is an extremely attractive automobile in very presentable and above average condition. This is a turn-key car that can be driven and enjoyed as it is. Please view the extensive photos, video footage, and detailed description to get a clear picture of the condition of this 911 SC. I have owned four 911’s prior (930, 911 SC, ’86 911 Carrera, 964) so am familiar with these air-cooled 911’s. Video: A 9 minute long high definition video is provided to better show the condition of this ’78 911 SC. The video footage was taken in April of 2015. To view the video please click play below or copy and paste the link. https://youtu.be/0_465nF_RuY Get your own valid XHTML YouTube embed code There are a few different sections to the clip: 1.) Driving clip showing the vehicle running and driving very nicely. Please note: The microphone for the camera was mounted directly in the engine bay, which is why it sounds loud. 2.) The first exterior-walk around shows the straightness of the body, quality of reflections in the finish, and condition of the interior. 3.) Engine start up shows that the engine starts easily, on the first try, idles smooth, and has great oil pressure. 4.) The rest of the driving clips show that this 911 runs and drives very well. It shifts absolutely great and has that great air cooled Porsche flat six sound. Notice the quality of the reflections as it is driving as well. Images: 200 high resolution images of this 911 are hosted via PhotoBucket. The photos were taken in April of 2105. Exterior: Black is arguably one of the best colors for a classic 911. The black finish on this 911 presents very well is and quite glossy. There is some wear and small details here and there that keep it classified to extremely nice driver quality. One can tell that great care was taken in the prep work for the refinishing this 911 received. The body panels are extremely straight, not wavy, and the finish has a very smooth surface. The level of detail in the reflections is very nice (see the picture of the Porsche book next to the paint). Some of the aging and wear that is present includes some minor but very limited chips and some minor in size, quantity, and seriousness, oxidation spots under the paint in limited areas. The car does look as good in person as it does in the pictures but when someone has their face within three feet or so and looking for stuff, some wear/aging can be found. There are not significant poor quality workmanship issues like gator skin cracks, orange peel, runs, peeling, and etc. Nor are there significant aging/wear issues like major scratches, wear along edges/peak lines from over buffing, significant oxidation, and etc. All of the body panels match nicely throughout the car in terms of tint and glossiness. Check out in the pictures and video the quality of the reflections in the finish. As stated, it is very deep and looks great. The finish should look nice for quite some time. The finish is plenty nice for this 911 to be taken to shows and Porsche club events. The body on this 911 is very straight. There are not signs of accident repair. The gaps line up very nicely throughout. When kneeling and looking down the side of the car, both driver and passenger sides are very straight. Door dings are not really to be found. The rear of the driver rocker has a minor dent in it an inch or two in length as it looks like someone must have driven over something. It is not noticeable unless someone actually leans very far down to look for it. The roof is beautifully straight, hood great, doors great, fenders great, etc. The body is quite solid. Floors are original and are very solid top and bottom, with no issues, no holes, no places looking like they will become holes. Both the front and rear bumpers are very nice. The whale tail is a proper Porsche unit and of course looks great. Front spoiler is present. The great Fuchs wheels are present and in very nice condition with no excessive wear or markings. The trim around the quarter windows and driver/passenger windows are okay but show some nicks and touch up. Lenses throughout are good. The front hood could use its shock supports switched out. The trunk itself is in very nice condition. The floor is absolutely solid. The engine bay is very presentable. The rest of the underbody of the car looks like it should. This Porsche’s body is very presentable and untampered with. The body is very original and obviously has been well taken care of for its 36 years of existence. Interior: The interior on this 911 is complete and in nice condition with some typical wear showing here and there. The interior as it is could be enjoyed without attention. Both seats are very nice. They are black leather and lack significant wear. The bolsters on both are great, color, and piping still intact. Both seats go forward too. The rear seats are also good. The dash as a whole is very nice. There are no significant wear spots or marks like cracks, burns, or significant scratches. By the passenger vent, there is VERY slight, and typical, warping of the dash pad, not obvious unless you know these cars and look for it. The steering wheel is nice. A leather wrap is around it now so the condition of the rim of the steering wheel itself is not known but the rest of it is very good. The gauges, switches, glove box, and etc. are also in presentable condition. The door panels are very nice and are lacking significant markings. There are two sets of floor mats in the car. The carpet is very nice. Seat belts are fine. The sunroof currently does not open. The radio is an upgraded CD player. The windows do go up and down but are slow and sometimes the driver side needs a little help to go down straight. The center console is very good. The red heater control levers in between the seats have the typical faded red look and have been hand painted. The most significant thing that could use attention is the headliner, and whether someone wanted to fix the sunroof or not. The headliner shows some touch up and wear. A new head liner is included though for the next owner (see picture). Please view all of the images of the interior. As stated, there is some typical minor, expected signs of use but overall the interior is in very nice condition and aids the driving enjoyment of this 911. Mechanical: This is a get in and go vehicle! Another great plus is this is not your typical leak all over the place air cooled 911. The engine on this 911 is great. The 1978 911 SC uses the very solid 3.0L engine. These are known as being some of the most dependable of the air-cooled engines, often many 911 SC’s around 200,000 miles without a rebuild. There is nothing to suggest this engine is not the original engine to this car. It has the proper 930/04 numbers on the case which designates it is a 911 SC 3.0L for the US. The engine number is 6280408 which is also correct (for those that are not familiar, the engine number of 911’s do not have the same number as the VIN). This engine starts up right away on the first try every time. If it has been sitting for two plus weeks, it will shoot a little puff of smoke out the back for about 2 seconds, which is pretty typical of any vehicle of this age and mileage. After the 2 seconds, that is gone. It is not excessive or alarming. The engine does not smoke at all after that, when driving, or at other moments. The engine does NOT excessively burn oil either. The engine idles smooth right away, even when cold. Absolutely no odd noises. There are absolutely no surging, sputtering, or other issues like that. It has excellent oil pressure and keeps a proper temperature. It goes through the RPM range as it should. It feels like it has the power it should, feels quick, and pulls nice in the upper RPM range. It sounds absolutely beautiful when under load and has that unique air-cooled six sound. The fuel injection system seems in great tune due to how nice this thing runs. I have a difficult time saying any classic vehicle “does not leak” but can say that this 911 at most drips about the size of a quarter after driving and sitting for multiple weeks. The engine is very tight. A couple oil lines and tubes have been replaced. The engine has the great Carrera chain tensioners upgrade as well as the better 930 valve covers. The heat exchangers/exhaust is in great shape, sounds great, and still has the catalytic converter on it for you California residents. Those that know classic 911’s know the A/C units are almost useless due to the excessive length of rubber hoses. The A/C pump and condenser is currently removed but is present and included with the car. The other A/C parts are present as well. The transmission on this 911 shifts beautifully. Absolutely no grinding, up or down, in any gear. This is 911 has the nicest synchros I have experienced in a 911. The clutch is great and feels great. No slippage. The tires hold air, have enough tread to be used for another season or two, but are a little older showing some cracking. The tires are fine for leisurely cruising but the sporting driver will probably want to change them out for something with more performance. The suspension does not make any alarming sounds. It is compliant, goes down the road straight, and seems fine. The brakes are great, no issues, and the car brakes straight. Headlights, turn signals, heater, etc. work. This car as it sits can be enjoyed and driven as it is. It definitely has a very nice drivetrain. Conclusion: Air-cooled 911’s have definitely increased in demand the past couple of years. These really are very special unique vehicles. They offer a sporting drive while still being very comfortable. The 911 SC tends to be the best bang for the buck in the air-cooled 911 world and best of all it has one of the more reliable engines from the series. There is of course strong support for these vehicles both online (ex: Pelican Parts, Rennlist) and at specialist shops. This specific 911 example is a wonderful driver’s car that is very presentable, looks great with its glossy black finish, front spoiler, whale tail, and Fuchs rims. This is a vehicle that can be enjoyed as is. Due to how presentable this 911 is, how solid the drive train is, and other factors, I have tried to price this example fairly at $26,400 or best offer.
