Vehicle Detail
2 owner 1964 Mercedes 220s Fin Tail originally purchased in St. Petersburg Florida by a woman who lived in Cave Springs, GA. Next the car was purchased from her estate by her life long neighbors son, who only kept it a few weeks and sold it to me in 1998. I drove the car for 2 years then garaged her for future use, she hasn't been driven for about 14 years but with a new battery and replacement of plugs and gas lines she started right up and purrs like a kitten - like the champion she is. Body is in really good condition with only a couple of dings, I don't believe she ever had any major body work done. There are many thin places in the paint, as well as, small rust flecks since paint is getting thin, she really needs a nice new paint job even though she shined right up beautifully! There are a couple of worse spots (shown in pics) where the rust has gotten worse on the paint. Chrome is pretty good overall, grill is great but the little surface trim is missing in a few places, bumpers have some dents (shown in pics), some chrome on back is pitted and could use re-chroming or replacement to be ultimate. Needs weather strip replacement in several areas like around doors, trunk, some windows. Trunk floor has some rust under mat, most is just surface and minor yet there are 2 small spots have rusted through, as mentioned, the car has been in a garage for the last 14 + years with no rain touching it so I guess that occurred way back then. Mechanical is basically good, engine runs great, I'm afraid brake master cylinder probably needs replacing as brakes are not currently working, fluid is not making it to brake bleeders. Then regular maintenance items like brake shoes, tires are about 16 y/o old but hold air great - probably not road safe though, wiper blades. Glass is good, a scratch from wiper and 1 peck in front windshield. Exhaust and muffler under car are rusty looking but probably ok for awhile. I have put her in gear to move her and forward and reverse are fine, for some reason shifter is not moving into the lower gears 2nd and 1st, she's automatic so I guess that's not a pressing issue. Interior is fair, seat upholstery is original and in great condition, no rips or splits, dashboard wood needs a nice easy sand job and new clear coat finish and I bet it'll look like new, many chrome parts have rough specks I don't know if they can be polished out or maybe re-chromed. Needs new carpet on floors, headliner is ok, not ripped or sag but has some stains. Steering wheel has little cracks and is a little dingy but solid. Original radio does not pick up sound yet lights up, with new speakers it may work - I never used the original as I had a radio/cd in glove box (not now). Interior overhead lights aren't currently working. A couple of non working items to list: headlights/taillights not coming on, not sure why yet, blinkers and back up lights work. Horn is not working. Getting this car ready to post was pretty fun really, the simplicity of the old cars makes restoring so easy that even a non-mechanic like me can fix her up. Putting the new gas lines on and spark plugs in and the general checking everything out. So much room to work and not so much that can be wrong, and the things that are are not that expensive. Years ago I had to buy a new hood ornament and while at the dealership I asked what parts were available, at that time they told me anything on the entire car was available from Mercedes Benz parts. Not sure if that's still true but I was wowed at the time. I feel that this is the perfect "easy" project car. She needs a little love and attention but is up and running and ready to go. Some fun repair and paint and she can be almost new again. I would love to keep her myself and do this but due to those crazy life changes I need to thin down my belongings, so sadly she has to find a new owner. Vehicle to be picked up in Royal, AR. Due to brakes not currently working you will need a trailer to pick up the vehicle. (I will update post if I get brakes working) I do have clear title to the vehicle yet I had to order a new replacement as I must have misplaced, or possibly never received, the original. The new title should be here prior pick up time.
