Vehicle Detail
1959 Chevrolet Corvette Outstanding Restoration! 70K Original Miles - Matching Numbers - Aux. Hardtop You are viewing a very nice, incredibly clean, privately owned 1959 Chevrolet Corvette. I'm the owner of "Classic Cars Online, llc." and this is my personal vehicle. This beauty has only 70,634 original miles and come with its original matching drivetrain. It also has the optional auxiliary hardtop. I'll try to describe and go over most of the car, please read and view all of the 162 pictures listed below. Would you buy a car on ebay with four pictures and one paragraph of description? NO. That is why at Classic Cars Online, our listings will go over and show every area of the vehicle that is up for auction. Bid with confidence! Even though I'm a National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) member, I never had this vehicle judged at their events. I'm sure it would score very well, but I'm not one of those guys that likes car shows. Below is a list of important numbers and the date codes that I was able to find and decode, which are all correct for this car. This "turn key" car could be driven anywhere. Everything is working correctly, right down to the clock and the flashing light bulb for the brake warning indicator. HERE ARE SOME OF THE NUMBERS AND DATE CODES: The numbers/codes listed below are ALL correct for this car! VIN Tag: J59S103311 Manufacture Date: Approx. Please view the close-up photos below that show some of these important numbers. UNDERCARRIAGE & FRAME: Let's talk about the frame first because this is the most important area to inspect when looking to buy a classic Corvette. The frame on the 1959 is and always has been "Rust Free"! NO repairs were ever done, and there is no undercoating which is hiding any past repairs or problem areas. As you can see from the undercarriage photos, The frame is smooth and doesn't have any scaling rust or pit marks from past rust issues. It wasn't sandblasted, only wiped down and painted. There is also a nice close-up photo with the VIN number stamped into the top of the frame. Remember, this wasn't a frame off restortation. The vehicle didn't need to go through all that work. The whole undercarriage was only cleaned and detailed. The springs, shocks, and other items where are all detailed with the correct paint finish, paint instection marks, and stickers. The fiberglass underbody was cleaned and left bare just how it was when it left the factory. Nine times out of ten, people selling a car would not talk about or take any photos of the underside. The undercarriage tells you a lot about the car, that is why I took a few pictures of the bottom before and after it was restored. Check out the photo that shows most of the original frame stencil still painted on the driver's side. PAINT/BODY: From what I can see, all of the original body bonding strips are present. The paint on this convertible is "Tuxedo Black" with "Silver" side coves. It was painted in 2002. It is holding up very well and still looks great. There are two or three very small chips that were properly touched up at one time along with a couple of very small stress crackes here and there. There are no buff makes, orange peel, or bubbles, in this paint. As you can see from the photos, even the door jams were properly prepped and repainted correctly. Both doors are aligned with the correct gaps and close with ease. The fiberglass lip around the engine compartment is also very nice. All four wheel lips are intact and not broken. CHROME/TRIM: Most of the chrome pieces have been rechromed or replaced with new items. The front and rear chrome bumpers look fantasic with no pitting or dulling. They are aligned and fit the body perfectly. The taillights/parking lights bezels, emblems, rear view mirror, side cove spears, and door handles are all without any pitting or problems. The stainless steel trim pieces are very nice, but not perfect. No major dents or scratches in any of the stainless steel moldings. CONVERTIBLE TOP - REMOVABLE HARDTOP: The optional auxiliary hardtop is in nice shape. It has the acrylic plastic windows which were replaced in the 1980's They all have the correct "Plexiglas" logo on them. All three hardtop windows are in very nice condition without any cracks, discoloring or fogging. The red vinyl headliner was replaced and is nice but does have a few small wrinckles in the tight curved areas. The weatherstrip and seals are in nice condition. The stainless steel trim on the hardtop is ok, not perfect. There is some pieces that could use a little straightening. (The hardtop option adds about $3,000 to the car's value.) The black convertible soft top is is very nice condition. I'm guessing it was replaced when the vehicle was painted in 2002. There are no rips, tears, or holes. The rear plastic window is not discolored or fogging. The black canvas interior headliner material/padding of the convertible has a few small rips where it meets the convertible top frame. (The soft top is down 99% of the time anyway.) The convertible top storage compartment is clean and detailed with a black soft top window protector felt on the gas tank cover. INTERIOR: The interior is in excellent condition and looks great. It was entirely redone in 2008. New correct seat covers, seat foam, door panels with new aluminum inserts, arm rests, along with new low loop "Daytona" carpeting which is correct for '59. Color coded rubber floor mats are also installed. The polished stainless steel sill plates are in great shape with only a few of the typical wear scuffs. The instrument cluster looks great. It was removed, restored and the gauges were gone over and calibrated. All of the chrome pieces/trim inside the car are also very nice. The chrome knobs and dash parts do not show any pitting or problems. The factory steering wheel is great without any cracks or chips. The cowl vent lever is working flawlessly and lets a ton of fresh air in when driving. The "Wonderbar" radio is working correctly along with the wipers, lights, gauges, horns, tachometer, speedometer, odometer, and clock which was converted to a quarts movement. Under the dash looks neat and orderly with all the wiring harnesses and other components in their correct places.(Not a rat's nest.) The "T3" headlights have been updated to newer brighter halogen lights for safety reasons. The storage area between the seats is sporting the owner's manual. The paint protection label decal is attached to the console door. ENGINE COMPARTMENT: The engine compartment is very clean and highly detailed to original condition. To do this correctly, the engine and transmission where both removed, cleaned, detailed, and reinstalled. Once again this is the correct ORIGINAL matching number 283cu. in. 230HP engine that came with the vehicle. With assembly identification stamping of "F1125CQ" (Flint, Nov. 25th, 230hp 1x4 Carb. w/Manual Transmission) They didn't start stamping the VIN number into the engine pad until the 1960 model year. Please view the close up photo of the unpainted engine stamp pad. (Don't you just love the other car listings telling you about "matching numbers" and if they have a photo of the engine stamp pad, it usally very small, out of focus, and has paint hiding the flaws! Not here!) I list and show all of the important casting and stamped numbers below in the photo gallery. The correct heat shielding, radio shielding, air cleaner, valve covers, radiator and fan shroud are all present. It also has the original date coded generator that drives the tachometer. Everything in this engine compartment was removed cleaned or painted and then reinstalled. All new hoses, belts, vacuum lines, spark plugs, ignition wires along with the fluids. Everything is correct, right down to the bolts, decals, correct hose clamps, and paint colors for all the parts. See the "Mechanical" description area for more details on the engine. TRUNK COMPARTMENT: The trunk compartment is also detailed and is show ready. It has a black rubber floor mat with a black cardboard division panel installed. Under the mat and plywood cover sits a B.F.Goodrich Silvertown bias ply wide whitewall spare tire. Size: 6.70-15. It is in very nice condition. The correct Corvette scissor jack is mounted under the space tire. The jack has the correct "SJ4653" casting number on the base. The rest of the jacking tools are all present and are held in place with the proper hardware. WHEELS and TIRES: All four rims are painted correctly. (With semi-gloss black paint on the backside and gloss black paint on the front.) The factory stock wheel covers with the chrome spinners are all installed. A few of the spinner are starting to show some pitting in the chrome. The stainless steel hubcaps are polished and are all in very nice condition without any scraps or dents. Mounted on these stock rims are four almost new P205/75R15 Coker Classic Radial tires with the correct size wide whitewall. (I upgraded to radial tires for better handling and comfort.) GLASS: All of the glass is still original with the correct date codes. Even the windshield still has the correct date code on it. ("VN" Dec. '58) It looks great but has a few typical road nicks and minor wiper marks which may be able to be buff out. There are no chips, cracks, or scratches on the side windows. Both side windows roll up and down without any problems. (Side glass date codes: "YN" Oct. '58) The side windows could be adjusted a little better to fit the hardtop and/or convertible top weatherstripping for a tighter seal. The outside rearview mirror looks good with no scratches or de-lamination problems. MECHANICAL: Engine-Transmission-Rear End: The entire drivetrain is original to the vehicle with the correct casting numbers and date codes. The 283cu. in. 230HP engine is running great with no known problems. I'm not sure when, but the engine was rebuilt at one time. I had the cylinder heads redone with harden valve seats a few years ago. It does not smoke, leak, tick, or bog. Feeding the engine is the correct type of Carter WCFB carberator but it is not totally coded correctly. The car runs cool with the original radiator during the summer months and doesn't over heat. The correct oil canister with a replaceable filter element is installed. The battery is strong and has a "Cutoff" switch installed. (Quick disconnect when the vehicle is being stored.) The factory Saginaw three-speed manual transmission with the correct casting date codes is bolted to this power plant. This transmission shifts nice and easy. It does not leak or make any type of noise. The original shifter works smoothly and is a joy to run through the gears. The clutch is in great condition and has been adusted for peak performance. The original rear differential is a non-posi 3.70:1 with the correct "AH" stamped code. (see photos.) It is working great and does not make any noise. The driveshaft received new u-joints and has the correct "3712377" stencil painted on it. Brakes: The stock factory drums brakes are adjusted and are working great. They do not pulsate, fade, or pull. New brake lines. The parking brake has been adjusted and is working fine. Suspension: The stock suspension received new bushings. All of the componets were removed, cleaned, and detailed correctly. I believe the rear leaf springs were replaced at one time. There are new shocks on the front and rear which have been painted gloss black to match the original ones. Most of the original inspection paint markings were duplicated and replaced. The rear axle area also has the correct "Rebound Straps" attached. The car drives awesome without any shakes or vibrations. The radilal tires make a big differance on the overall drivability and comfort. Exhaust: The vehicle has the correct date coded exhaust manifolds that feed into a "Stainless Steel" dual exhaust system. The highly polished exhaust tips exit though the rear bumpers and look perfect. (It sounds even better!) Bolted to the exhaust system are the correct copper braided radio grounding straps. Bolted to the passenger side exhaust manifold is a correct heat riser valve that works with the thermal choke on the carburator.
