Vehicle Detail

This is a 64 ½ Mustang convertible that was manufactured at the San Jose plant which in my opinion makes it a little rarer than others. As I understand it they only built 64 ½ mustangs at that plant 18 days in the month of July before going to the 65 models in August. Build date on this car is July 21 with the 260 V/8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering and power top. I think the air conditioner was added later with a very nice install done. I restored this car with the following details in 2000. The 260 engine had seen better days when I bought the car and I changed it over to a 5 bolt 289 engine that I completely built with a TRW 289 .30 overbore rebuild kit that contained all new bearings, forged pistons, rings, Melling oil pump and gaskets. Heads were completely reworked with new valve guides, valves and seals, hardened seats, TRW guide plates, Crane valve springs, Crane hydraulic lifters and Crane cam. Engine has nice little thump to it and performs very well. Intake is standard cast iron Ford 4V intake with a Autolite 4V carburetor. Dual point distributor with Pertronix module. Exhaust is Flowtech ceramic coated headers with California turbo mufflers exiting rear valance through GT trumpet exhaust tips. Engine is dressed out like a 289 Hipo with original chrome valve covers and repo air cleaner. The old green dot transmission has been replaced with a rebuilt 66 version and rear gear is now single track 3:25 ratio with new axle bearings. Front brakes have been upgraded to 4 piston disc and rear brakes are rebuilt drum. The wheels are 1972 Ford 14x7 magnum 500 with 215/70/14 BF Goodrich Silvertown Radial Redlines with approx. 500 miles on them. Spare tire rim will be replaced with matching 500 rim I have on hand but haven’t changed out. The sheet metal on the car is all original except the rear tail panel, rear GT valance and front valance. The floor pans are all original and have some minor holes and rust in about 3 places that I treated and covered over with fiberglas bondo material because they just weren’t that bad. There is some minor rust spots under passengers door and left rear quarter in front of wheel opening and at rocker panel seam. There is some cracking in the bondo on the front of the hood where I suppose it had been bumped at some time. I was not able to watch all paint and body work that was done in 2000 but know from talking to previous owner car hasn’t had any collision other than a slight hit in the rear. Complete interior was replaced in 2000 and new top installed a few years later. Note the “K” code 8000 grand Rally Pac and Custom Autosound am/fm cassette radio with speakers in front kick panels and in rear quarter interior panels. There is a small radio amplifier under the passenger seat that makes it possible to hear the music with the top down. The air conditioner is 134A with new everything except unde rdash unit and works great but will leak down some in a years time. I ran a leak check on it and find nothing so I think it’s in the back of the underdash unit where the hoses hook up because I was very cautious about tightening them up and probably didn’t get it that extra little twist. With all that said I must say I’m trying to give every detail I can think of and can remember but probably left something out without any intention. I’ve owned and really enjoyed this car for the past 15 years and hate to see her go but I’ve got another project I want to work on and need some space. Believe me you can just crank this car and go anywhere without worry. Questions are welcome and I’ll be happy to share anything about this car that I know. I will be putting car on a lift in a couple days and will post pics of the underside. Car can be picked up in Georgia or I may be able to help with transport myself depending on destination. I also have a friend in the auto transport business that we can make arrangements with.NOTE: The color of the car is the original Sunlight Yellow and the bright sun and all the green grass is casting a greenish tint to the pics of the body. The best example of the color is the underside of the hood and trunk. When I add pics of the under side I will also add or change some of the pics in the listing. When I took pics of the underside a mechanic friend looked over the car with me and we noticed some residue around a couple fittings in the a/c lines that I will tighten and run another leak test on. Also take note that I have changed the pic of the bottom of the drivers door to show that the rust there is not as bad as the first pic showed. The 2 videos I added are not that great but give you some idea how the car sounds and drives. And now the rest of the story: If you look at the latest pics I have added you'll see notes and invoices pertaining to this car. If you look at the envelope I jotted some notes on you can see that the car was bought from a girl in Los Angeles, Ca. in 1981 and he took it to Austin,Tx. where after he had it for some years it was taken by the IRS for taxes. You can see where I made a note of the milage (35,381) at the time I bought it at auction. Speedometer reading at this time is 46,554 but will change as I'm driving it and enjoying this spring weather. Car has less than 10,000 miles on it since restoring in 2000. The original rear gear was 2:79, then changed to 3:00 and now 3:25 and gear in trans has not been changed. The car had been repainted Resale Red in Califronia and was that color when I bought it. As you can see in the detailed pics it has been put back to it original color. This car just hasn't been driven that much and hasn't been abused. Note the door alignment and the fact it has no export brace or monte carlo bar.
