The car had a salvage title when I bought it, and the person from whom I bought it, also took delivery of the car with a salvage designation on the title. I do not know the exact reason for this as the only evidence of damage repair is some respray of the panels inside the front end of the car, underneath the hood (right behind the grilles). The work is minor and does not affect the car's appearance, or drivability. A gray market car like an M635CSI would have been brought in to North America requiring a number of modifications in order to "federalize" it. These cars were also greatly misunderstood, as some had aftermarket boxes installed which were supposed to take output from an O2 sensor in order to modulate mixture. The problem is that the Euro ECU does not have a input for said signal, so the modification was useless. The point is that not a lot was known about these cars and they would have been very expensive to repair. Consider that by 1995 parts, knowledge and availability of shops willing to work on them would be challenging, and thus the cost of any repair would be higher than expected. Paired with a car who's value was hard to calculate (when you could buy a new E36 M3 for less than $40,000) it is entirely likely that the cost of repairing even minor damage would be considered "excessive" by insurance companies. In California some insurance companies will write off a car whose damage repair costs more than 75% of the total value of the car. Any settlement paid out on a vehicle in that situation would then get a "salvage" title. Finally, I've owned this car for almost 7 years and have driven it over 50K miles. A large percentage of mechanical components have been replaced (as outlined below) and it is a fine driving car. It's not perfect, it's not a show car, and it's a low mileage original example. What it is however, is a good looking, reliable, fun to drive, car that would be a great addition to any BMW enthusiast's garage. UPDATE:The car's current mileage is 193XXX. It is stored and driven only occasionally in order to keep it roadworthy. 191XXX miles California car for at least the past 15 years BMW Mobile Tradition information confirms that BMW M635CSI #11051234 was manufactured on November 27th, 1984 and delivered on December 14th, 1984 to the BMW dealer Kressel in Jettingen. The original color is Alpine White. No serious structural or cosmetic rust. No bubbling paint, not rusty sills or rockers. UPDATE:I've fielded questions from several parties regarding the sentence below. The car has not been driven on a daily basis since 2012 but there has been no change to oil consumption. There are no oil leaks nor any changes to its oil usage. The car admittedly has high mileage but oil consumption is not excessive in as of February, 2011 the car was still producing 222 ft lb of torque and 217 BHP at the rear wheels. The car is CARB compliant, and has brand new catalytic converters. It currently is running very cleanly, with emissions well under the limits and under the average in CO and HC. The car is quiet and comfortable with lots of newly replaced mechanical and cosmetic components in the past 10,000 miles including: Mechanical components replaced -new battery -newly rebuilt alternator -new waterpump -new power steering pump -new brake hydro-accumulator -newly rebuilt rear shocks by Bilestein NA -new front shocks -new rear subframe mounts -new OE foglights (extremely hard to find, had to be shipped via private party from Germany) -front upper and lower a-arms (Meyle) -new transmission output shaft seal -new radiator -new door seals -new sunroof seals -new plug wires and coil -rebuilt driveshaft -new hood shocks Cosmetic components replaced -new decklid spoiler -new rear parcel tray seat covers and carpet Other upgrades -Miller Performance Mass Airflow Sensor -Alpine head unit, w/Sirius/XM and iPod integration, Alpine amp, 2 8” JL Audio subwoofers and period correct ADS speakers -UEGO O2 sensor and AFR gauge (in glovebox) -BBS Style 5 wheels in excellent condition, no curb rash, with healthy Dunlop tires at each corner -Frank Fahey Motorsports crank hub -dual valve spring and timing chain tensioner update
