Vehicle Detail
1953 Packard Caribbean Convertible. Estate car. Beautiful! 1953 Packard Caribbean Convertible Listed on behalf of the estate of the owner. From the estate of a prominent Northwest Packard collector. This 1953 Caribbean received a driving restoration approximately 15 years ago by the previous owner and was in the process of being upgraded by the current owner when he unexpectedly passed away recently. It is now being offered for sale by the family. This car (serial number 2678-2346) is the the 345th of the 750 Caribbeans built in 1953. These were truly "made to order" luxury sports cars, with a price new of nearly $6,000 and designed to compete with the Cadillac Eldorado and Buick Skylark convertibles. This particular car was owned by a couple for many years. They restored the car for driving with a high quality repaint in correct Packard "Matador Maroon" color. Today the paint presents nicely with only a few scuffs from use (see photos.) I've gone around this car with a magnet and there are no signs of filler. The rockers are solid with no signs of rust. The panel fit is excellent and the doors close solidly. The chrome and stainless is a combination of excellent original and newer plating. No pitting. The unique Caribbean stainless fender trim is gorgeous. The wheels were replaced with new McLean 52-spoke chrome wire wheels in correct style, wrapped with Coker Classic radial wide whitewall tires. The interior upholstery was replaced with black leatherette which now shows wear and was in the process of being upgraded at the time of the current owner's passing. The front door panels have been reupholstered in correct style leather in maroon and ivory. The convertible top was replaced with correct tan Haartz cloth and presents well today. There is a stain on the interior headliner from storage, which should clean easily. The power systems (windows and top) work well. The hydraulic pump has just been rebuilt by HydroElectric in Florida. Wiring in the car is original. Window glass is good with the exception of a small crack at the bottom of the driver's door window. All instruments work and register accurately with the exception of the gas gauge and clock. Radio hums but does not sing. Manual antenna. Wipers work. Heater works but blower does not. The trunk lining and interior are original. There is a small line of rust-through in the back of the trunk floor. Nothing serious, but we do want to mention it. We see no other signs of rust in the car. Please see photos. Mechanically, the original 327 c.i. straight 8 engine received a full rebuild and has seen minimal use since. A recent compression test found all cylinders in the 100# to 120# range straight down the line. Plenty of power. Does not smoke. Runs well. New 6 volt Optima battery. Recently tuned-up by a Packard specialist. He also noted that the power steering ram has been rebuilt, as has the power brake system, and the Ultramatic transmission. I have driven this car and note that it drives well but the transmission quadrant should be adjusted as it does not shift into the "low" range. I believe this may be just a result from sitting. It is fine on the highway and for normal driving. Park, Neutral and Reverse ranges function normally. It tracks down the road smooth and straight. Overall, this is a lovely Caribbean that can be driven, enjoyed and shown now, or taken to concours level quite easily. It is a standout on the road or at shows, and always elicits curiosity and comments wherever you go. "Ask the man who owns one!"
