This is one of the very few Mercedes-Benz Grand Edition W140s produced in the last and only year of production and sale. 600 were produced worldwide and only 200 were imported to the United States. The Grand Edition was produced to commemorate a period of Mercedes Benz production quality that may never return. W140 is the factory designation for this series of S-class sedans, when Mercedes was raising the bar for quality and luxury instead of price-engineering quality out of their cars to meet price points. It is widely accepted among Mercedes enthusiasts that the W140 was a superior vehicle to many S-class cars that followed, and perhaps the highest quality production car the factory built. This car originally sold for well over $100,000. It has double pane glass, which provides for a much quieter ride, as well as better heat and air conditioning performance. The special Grand Edition can be recognized by its lighted door thresholds, moon roof, special Black Maple wood interior trim, exclusive Obsidian Black paint, a special, tow-tone coordinated all-leather interior, not to mention all the other luxury and convenience features associated with 1999 S Class Benz, the last year for this body style. (It is widely accepted by collectors that the last year of a make and model are usually the most valuable and sought after. And this is the best of the last, aptly named the Grand Edition.) Standard S-class features include power steering, power disc brakes, 4-speed automatic transmission, climate control air conditioning and heating, heated seats front and rear, power seats with memory, adjustable steering wheel, Becker AM/FM Stereo with CD changer, power privacy shade, power adjustable side mirrors, and countless more convenience features… literally every option Mercedes offered is on this car! The Grand Editions were hand built in Germany and specially tested by Mercedes-Benz engineers. They are often described as “overbuilt” and were a true statement of Mercedes-Benz superiority. The Obsidian Black paint, parchment leather interior and the interior/wood combination was exclusive to this model as were the illuminated door sills, and 18" AMG Aero Monoblock sport wheels. This particular car was owned by personal friends of mine, so I have known the car for most all its life. It has always been carefully maintained and received very gentle and light use, hence its low 100k mileage. (Most of the cars of this vintage have hundreds of thousands of miles.) It has no rust anywhere, has never been in an accident, and aside from a few stone chips accumulated from 16 years of careful use, is in magnificent condition. I have recently gone through the car inside and out and in the process rebuilt the oil suspension, tuned the car, and made sure that all the systems and accessories work as they should. I am a car collector, so my level or perfection invariably exceeds the norm. Moreover, I feel this is a collector quality vehicle both in terms of its rarity, significance and condition.
