Vehicle Detail
1970 IH 800A Scout. I have owned this Scout for just over 4 years. I acquired it from Astro Wrecking/Leo's Affordable Used Cars, in Federal Way Washington. They purchased it at an auction, for $275.00. The prior owners had recently installed a new dual exhaust system, 5 new Goodyear Wrangler Tires, and 5 new White Spoke Wheels. They also installed a new glass bowl fuel pump, which was never plumbed to the Holley carb. I believe they had problems with the fuel tanks (left side was rusted through) and rust particles in the right tank, plus a small leak, ruptured the fuel pump diaphram. I think that was more than they could tolerate, and had it towed away. My woman was the Bookkeeper there at the time, and contacted me, since the owner was going to remove the engine and tranny, and crush the rig for scrap. I purchased the Scout, had the right tank (10 gallon) repaired with a new section welded in, plumbed the fuel pump to the carb, and drove it home. This rig is now titled and licensed in Washington State (original 1970 Plate). 4 speed transmission (1st gear is compound low). Engine is a strong running 304 V8, however it does puff out black smoke when started hot (valve guides/seals?). Clutch is fine, does not slip, transmission shifts smoothly. New parts since I acquired it are: Windshield and gasket, new sending unit in the gas tank (needs to be adjusted, gauge shows empty when there are 4 gallons left). Recent oil & filter change. Top of the line brake shoes, wheel cylinders, front brake hoses, tie rod, tie rod ends, drag link. Pittman arm (Anything Scout), rear leaf springs re arched. New clutch cable included, as well as a nice All Wheel Drive fender emblem, and misc. small parts. Front end is nice and tight. I have used Premium non- Ethanol fuel in this rig for the last year. This rig now has factory Scout wheels and hubcaps, from a 1973 Scout 2. Seats are not original, but one original seat came with it, and is included. Paint is original, as applied at the factory. I have not rubbed out or waxed the paint, and still has grease pencil marks on the fenders from the wrecking yard. Tires are near new Wildcat (Dean Tire & Rubber Co.) 15". All gauges, dash lights, turn signals, back up lights, brake lights, side marking lights, heater/defroster,emergency brake, wipers, radio (speaker going bad), dash map light, headlights, horn in working order. A tach and oil gauge were also added (below the dash) by the previous owner. I have a photo copy of the original line setting ticket, that lists all the major components when it left the factory. This rig was shipped to Portland Oregon, and was sold new in Elmdorf Alaska . It then made its way to Oklahoma, and back to Washington State. If you are used to the driving experience of your Cadillac North Star, you will probably not like the road manners of an old Scout!!! This rig has a manual choke, and a manual throttle for starting. Rear end gears are 3.73, and cruises comfortably at 50-55 mph. Right front fender has a small rusted section at the front panel juncture. Rusted through on drivers side floor, and will need a section replaced, and on the rocker panels. Dash paint and instruments are in great condition. THIS RIG HAS CREAKS AND RATTLES ASSOCIATED WITH A 44 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. SADLY, THE 8 TRACK TAPE DECK IS NOT INCLUDED, NOR THE HIGH SCHOOL TASSEL!!!. I recently removed the travel top for the first time, to enjoy our short summer. All the top glass is good, window gaskets have shrunk from the Oklahoma sun. Spare tire/wheel is a matching rim, but tire sidewall has sun damage, and is not usable.THIS SCOUT APPEARS TO HAVE SPENT MOST OF ITS LIFE IN WASHINGTON STATE, WHERE IT RAINS EVERY DAY!!! THE GOOD THING IS, THE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT DOES NOT USE SALT ON THE ROADS TO MELT THE SNOW IN WINTER. I AM SURE THIS SCOUT HAS RUST ISSUES IN THE NORMAL PLACES. INCLUDES ORIGINAL OWNERS SERVICE POLICY, OPERATORS MANUAL, AND FACTORY SHOP MANUAL. (PAYMENT BY UNITED STATES CURRENCY (CASH) OR BANK WIRE ONLY, AND I WILL EMAIL A COPY OF THE TITLE AND REGISTRATION (BINDING AGREEMENT). I AM NOT AN OFF ROADER, OR INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVES, I JUST HATED TO SEE THIS RIG CRUSHED. SHOULD BE A GREAT START FOR A RESTORER. ANY QUESTIONS, FEEL FREE TO CALL: (253) 678 4042. THIS SCOUT IS LOCATED IN PUYALLUP WASHINGTON, 30 MILES SOUTH OF SEATTLE, ABOUT 10 MILES FROM INTERSTATE 5.
