Please have patience for the photos to load, it will be worth the wait! 1961 Plymouth Sport Suburban Rare Golden Commando 395 Torque Big Block V8 + Golden Commando 395 (actually it is a 361 cubic inch Hi-Perf rated at 305 Horse Power with factory Dual Exhaust) Very Rare Indeed ---- (Most Plymouths came with the small 318 V8 or the famous slant 6 engine + + The Sport Suburban Wagon was the top of the price line for the Plymouth wagons in 61 + + This Plymouth Sport Wagon came with the new for 61 "Heavy Duty Synchro-Silent" manual 3 speed transmission with the column shifter... Very rare in deed ------ Most Plymouths were equipped with the famous Torqueflite transmission. On the interstate you just pull out and effortlessly pass with just a little extra throttle, the hi-perf 361 has plenty of grunt, no down shifting required. This car has been driven on a few lengthy trips this past summer so it is a very dependable car + +++ History on this Vehicle ++++ + Here is a little data from the 1961 Plymouths which makes them unique in the least + + Virgil Exner - Father of the Fins of the 50’s - Pretty much his last hooray was the 61 Chrysler products + Interiors were space age design with the infamous Command Seat that had a raised driver’s side lean back for driver comfort + + Unique was the metal flake imbedded plastic Semi-Square Aero Steering Wheel, The Teleview Ribbon Speedometer, and new close cut pile carpet for double durability + + New for 1961 Plymouth was the demanding "Look-at-Me" front end with the sweeping eyebrow trim and the frowning face grill and front end + + The 1961 Plymouths most unique attraction was the aftermarket looking "Hang on Flashlight" tail lights + + The free standing tail lights were a Virgil Exner special touch... Love it or Hate it!!! He made the famous top of the line Imperials a class of their own with the famous neo-classical free standing chrome tail light pods that every classic car enthusiast recognizes + + In 1961, Chrysler installed the modern alternator as standard equipment on their cars. To push their enthusiasm of the efficiency of the modern alternator over the generator, they ran a car from Detroit to Chicago with no battery. Pretty gutsy you might say.+ +++ Condition of this Car ++++ + The side Solex Safety Glass is about as perfect as you can get. There are no scratches nor acid rain period. They are crystal clear. The windshield is very nice with only a few minor rock specs the size a ballpoint pen + + The interior is all original except for the front bottom inserts which were done in the original material. The carpet is nice with no heel holes, rot nor tears. The door panels look like NOS and so does the headliner except for the very-old-school speakers that were installed back when who knows when + + The rear compartment side vinyl panels are in extremely nice pliable condition with no tears or marks. The rear vinyl floor mat is unscratched and looks as if it has never been used. The spare tire compartment is beautiful and the paint looks like day one, the spare tire mounting decal is unblemished as well. The Bakelite dash accessory knobs on the radio, heater control, ignition switch, wiper and light switch looks like they were just taken out of the box. Don't worry about wrinkled up dash pads, this one is a dash pad delete and the original paint on the dash is gorgeous + + The steering wheel is in very good condition but has some cracks with only one small 1 inch piece that will move on the rim...not a biggy though!!!. Overall, when driving the car you definitely get that 60’s space age feeling as you glance at the dash mounted rear view day/night mirror that was common on the 50 and early 60 Chrysler cars...something you do have to get a little use to !!! + + All the chrome and trim is original and in extremely nice condition with virtually no pitting on any of the pot-metal parts. The mirrors, tail lights, quarter panel moldings etc. are beautiful with no aged chrome hazing. The headlight bezels that always get dinged up are perfect except for the drivers outside ring that bears a few almost unnoticed spots...no biggy there!!! + + Sorry, I never got the original wheels and hubcaps. It has a nice set of new Old-Style Radir spin-offs by Cragar that suits the car very nicely if you like that "GoodGuys "car show look+ + This car appears to have always been adult pampered. I would love to see someone who appreciates the uniqueness of the 61 Plymouths land this beauty in their garage. Like I said, it can be driven with no apprehension of failure although it is still an old car. If you are looking for the best of the best for 61 Plymouth Sport Wagons, you have found it ++ I also have the original owners manual , warrantee book, and some misc receipts from repairs in the past + ++ About Myself ++ Here at Garren Auto Sales our Reputation is based on truth and Honesty. + I’ve been an avid Mopar collector and a bonded dealer for over 35 years and I still love these old original survivor cars.
