Vehicle Detail
Fun in the Sun: 1982 Porsche 911SC 3.0 Targa! Porsche's air-cooled 911s, manufactured from 1964 to 1998, are legendary sports cars. All of them are coveted by collectors today, but some models are more desirable to own than others. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Porsche 911SC of 1978-'83 corrected all the shortcomings of its much-lamented 2.7-liter predecessor and is universally regarded as one of the finest 911s ever built. Its level of fit and finish is legendary; many examples last for 250,000 miles or more without major repairs. Among the main improvements were a new 3.0-liter aluminum engine block, the use of a catalytic converter instead of the dreaded thermal reactors, and the fitting of an auxiliary oil cooler under the right front fender on all models. Also introduced was a maintenance-free, breakerless ignition system. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Despite their timeless appearance and bullet-proof engines, the remaining SCs are already 31 to 36 years old. Their zinc-coated bodies have protected many from becoming victims of the dreaded tin worm, but time and continuous usage can still take their toll. Finding a well preserved, better yet, pampered car featuring low miles should be of paramount importance for any serious collector looking for a "keeper" quality 911SC. Here's one! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Sold new on 5/1/1982, VIN *WP0EA0914CS161636* is an enthusiast-owned example that was only driven on sunny summer days, spending the winter months parked and covered inside a heated garage. It comes with its original Owner's Manual and Warranty & Maintenance books, nicely kept inside the merlot vinyl pouch. Numerous service stamps and maintenance records, as well as a clean Carfax report document the car's 86,319 actual miles. Needless to say, to unearth an SC that has only been driven 2,750 miles annually, on average, should count as a major score for most 911SC aficionados! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Last owner's records total $3,545,73. Recent expenses were for a set of tires, a new alternator, and a flasher relay. Together with the entries in the maintenance book and the Carfax, the paper records nicely establish the progression of the miles over the past 32 years. When it comes to vintage Porsches, it's always a good idea to acquire a car with low miles PLUS a well-documented provenance! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Beginning our inspection up front, with the trunk, we're pleased to find a well-preserved trunk mat as well as the -- almost -- complete factory tool kit. And, yes, the trunk light works and the struts securely keep the trunk lid open, without the assistance of a broom handle. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Stripped of its cladding, nothing but healthy factory sheet metal meets the inquisitive eye. Spare is unused, battery looks to be near new. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) More importantly, the vulnerable "nose" section, where neglect, accident damage, and corrosion would appear first, has remained in pristine condition. Thankfully, by 1982, the men from Zuffenhausen had learned to apply enough protection to the car's sheetmetal to spare it serious corrosion woes. This low-miler is no exception, as it presents itself in a fabulous, virtually "as delivered" state. Having been driven exclusively during the summer, when the roadways are free of ice, snow, and salt, has helped tremendously, of course. This car looks like it's five years old, not thirty-two. Hood and door gaps are exceptional. Body is straight as an arrow, without any "friendly" waves, nicks, dings, dents, or scratches. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) A Targa combines the advantages of a convertible's open air pleasures with those of a coupe's rigid body construction. It takes but seconds to remove the Targa top, fold it, and store it in the trunk. Suddenly, open air motoring takes on a whole new dimension! The Targa top itself has been re-upholstered in 2009; it's in primo condition, free of rips, tears or any other damage. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Seldom seen, deep bronze/brown "Palisandermetallic" paint (code #L474) really looks like is namesake, the exotic South American hardwood, and is in wonderful condition. There are no major imperfections to point out. Only signs of age are the usual rock chips up on the front valance, and a few isolated bubbles on the solid aluminum front bumper and at the lower left of the windshield gasket. The iconic 16" forged FUCHS aluminum wheels are also superbly preserved and shod with correctly-sized KUMHO ECSTA high-performance radials all around. Tires have 95% of their tread life left. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Inside, there's just about every convenience we desire in a luxury car today. Luckily, the buck stops here. There's no electronic overload that could cause reliability issues after 30+ years: no ABS, no airbag, no traction control, no tire pressure monitor. No blinking lights and no computer screens. Despite its sensible evolution, the 911SC remained a true sporting driver's car. The dashboard itself, almost always cracked, here it is about as perfect as it gets: according to the records, it was replaced at great expense in 1997. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The instrument cluster sporting five big VDO gauges has looked like this since 1969. It's hard to improve upon perfection! The dominant tach received a 6,300rpm redline for the SC. All gauges work, even the clock. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Full leather interior boasts these beautiful, Über-rare Cerullo sport seats we've only ever seen in some early RUF-Porsches. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Perfectly preserved occasional rear seats -- also clad in genuine leather -- fold individually forward, serve either as additional luggage space or provide comfy seating arrangements for the little ones or your favorite pet. Versatility is the keyword here. Note the rear seat belts. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) All the lights work, including the rear license plate lights and the backup lights. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Toothbrush clean engine compartment houses the matching numbers, healthy 3-liter 6-cylinder boxer motor, #64C3262, powerful enough to allow the Porsche to sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.8 seconds. The quarter mile dash takes just over 14 seconds, and top speed is a healthy 149mph. That's fast -- really fast, actually -- even by today's elevated standards! To make things even better, fuel consumption is around 25 miles per gallon, one of the many reasons the 911SC has been called the "sensible Porsche." This one is in perfect tune and runs very strong, with absolutely no untoward mechanical noises, just beautiful music flowing from its exhaust tip with a harmony that reminds of Vivaldi's Sonata Facile. And, we've checked the garage floor: no unsightly oil drips, either! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Accordingly, your high expectations in a Porsche as a most refined driver's car are fulfilled with this attractive example. Although you should experience it for yourself, let us attempt to relay a bit of the excitement of driving this fully sorted 911SC to you. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) We took the SC to the test, taking off in downtown San Buenaventura, near Ventura's Mission dating back to the late 18th century, and headed for the hills. Not a secret, a 911SC is not only a fantastic Autobahn stormer, even more so it really loves to be chased around corners, all the while being allowed to bellow and roar to its Teutonic heart's delight! A workout for man and machine and a feast for the senses! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Its slick, type 915 five-speed tranny sucks in the gears with unconcealed pleasure, up or down, any way you like it, whereas the fluorescent-red needle of the rev-counter jumps at light speed and the engine trumpets its melodious sound openly but nonetheless in a civilized and harmonic manner. The SC is a powerful, yet well-groomed supercar. You can drive it in stop-and-go traffic, and it behaves like granny's old Chevy. But you can also tickle the wild animal lurking within, and it will reveal its hidden personality: that of the true sports car which has been refined for decades by engineers seemingly raised and schooled on race tracks. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) It truly is confidence-inspiring to know that the SC has a suspension to match its engine's force. Over-engineered, capable to handle the 930 Turbo's 300 horsepower, tested and refined on the World's fastest race tracks as well as just about any rally course on the planet, a modern 911SC sticks to the road like it's running on rails. Believe me, you'll most likely never experience its limits of adhesion. And you wouldn't want to, either . . . Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) We've really enjoyed exercising this tight Targa! Among the quickly diminishing supply of good examples of this classic air-cooled 911 model, the Palisander beauty stands out as a well-documented, well-kept, and well-performing low-miler. With prices for well-kept Super Carreras on the rise, this car may be exactly what the doctor ordered. Opportunity calls; are you ready to answer?
