Vehicle Detail

Back to the Basics: 1979 Porsche 911SC Euro Coupe! Porsche's early 911s, built between 1965 and 1973, are legendary. They're pure, brutal, loud, and demanding: perfect automotive exercise machines and Sunday toys! For daily use, however, these cars might be less suited. The same applies to their successors: Porsches built between 1974 to 1977 were equipped with the trouble-prone 2.7 magnesium engine and needed expensive fixes to be reliable. Things finally changed for the better with the introduction of the 3.0-liter 911SC in 1978. Still pure in their design, with an engine as powerful as it is reliable, they are the true successors of the long hood Nine-Elevens. Naturally, as more enthusiasts become aware of the inherent qualities of the 911SC, values have been rising steadily and will continue to do so. That's more than a lifetime for any automobile, making it difficult yet of paramount importance to find an example that has never suffered from rust or accident damage, is free of mechanical problems, doesn't leak or smoke, yet is still affordable for those of us who have to work for a living. Well, here's one! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The 1979 Porsche 911SC Coupe presented here, VIN *9119300535*, is a genuine European model that was picked up by its original owner, an US Army Captain, right at the factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. The car subsequently found its way to the United States and eventually ended up in the Golden State where we were able to purchase it recently. Being a Euro model, it's lighter, faster, and more "basic" than its plush American siblings. Yes, less can be more indeed! So let's have a closer look, shall we? Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Starting our inspection up front, in the trunk, we are pleased to find the correct, gray felt trunk carpeting, as well as the factory tool roll with factory tools inside. Not shown in this photo, but also included, is a Porsche Owner's Manual. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Stripped naked, she still looks stunning in all of her original beauty! Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The inflatable spare is date-coded 10/78, so it's the original one, and the vulnerable "nose" section, often compromised through leaking battery acid, is absolutely corrosion free and unmolested. Porsche's undercarriage remains in a superb state of preservation. There's no sign of rust or previous accident damage, nor of spray car artistry of any kind. All the finishes here date back to 1979 and have been applied at the factory. The brownish stuff at the front suspension and in the front of the fuel tank is what's left of the factory Cosmoline, a protective, transparent wax that turns a caramel color over time. Make sure you enlarge them to their full size. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Porsche body is straight as an arrow, with perfect hood and door gaps. Forged. 6-inch-wide Fuchs wheels still show their anodized factory finish and wear radial tires in the correct dimension of 205/55-16 up front and 225/50-16 in the back. The car has European H4 headlights with asymmetrical reflectors and working parking lights, as well as blinkers on the front fenders. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Repainted once in its original Alpine White (code L90E) color, the finish is lovely but not to Pebble Beach standard. There are a couple of small, carefully touched up paint chips on the left quarter panel, too insignificant to show up in these photos. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Not much has changed since 1965 when it comes to the 911's interior; it's still timeless, elegant and ergonomically perfect. Black headliner and sunvisors are beautifully preserved; both dome lights work as they should. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) It's hard to improve upon perfection. The car has everything you need, nothing you don't. There's no ABS, no airbag, no traction control. Nor are there any blinking lights or a computer screen with GPS and backup cameras. Despite its sensible evolution, the 911SC remained a true sporting driver's car. Note the marvelously preserved, original dash! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The instrument cluster features five big VDO gauges, here with white dials. The dominant tach shows a 6,300rpm redline. All gauges work, even the clock. In-dash Alpine CD-radio is a sensible update. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Factory seats feature desirable houndstooth cloth inserts framed by black leatherette. They are flawless. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Perfectly preserved, occasional rear seats fold individually forward, serve either as additional luggage space or provide comfy seating arrangements for the little ones or your favorite pet. Versatility is the keyword here. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Finally, we examine the car's mechanical prowess. Let's stroll around to its rear end, where Porsche's bullet-proof boxer motor rests below a steel bonnet. Note the slim, euro-style rear bumper guards. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The potent heart of the SC is its healthy, matching numbers, 3-liter 6-cylinder engine # *5390821* with 172 horsepower on tap, enough to allow the Porsche to sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.8 seconds. The quarter mile dash takes just over 14 seconds, and top speed is claimed to be 149mph. That's fast, really fast, even by today's elevated standards! Gasoline is sipped at a thrifty 25 miles per gallon; one of the many reasons the 911SC has been called the "sensible Porsche." Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) This one is in perfect tune and runs very strong, with absolutely no untoward mechanical noises, just beautiful music flowing from its exhaust tip with a harmony that reminds us of U2's It's a beautiful Day. And, we've checked the garage floor: no unsightly oil drips, either! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Blessed with fabulous, dry weather year-round, let's drive! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The engine cold and still sleepy from the night before, you turn the ignition key--located on the dash, to your left--and the mighty Boxer instantly comes to life. Thanks to the state-of-the-art C.I.S. fuel injection, this happens in a rather unspectacular way. The motor just idles with the precise ticking of a mechanical Rolex watch, independent of temperature and humidity, and reacts to your right foot's most subtle commands without hesitation. Ready to go? Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) It feels great to be behind the wheel of a 911SC. The car is lithe, nimble, powerful, and sounds ferocious. Handling and (power-assisted) braking capabilities are immense, as the chassis was engineered to handle the 930 Turbo's 300 horsepower with ease. The car feels utterly safe at all legal -- and most illegal -- highway speeds. No wonder, really, as no other car maker in the World can boast of a more successful racing history. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) After a quick, invigorating drive, we return home, singing the praises of the 911SC. It truly is one of our favorite road rockets. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The esteemed Sports Car Market magazine mentions the Porsche 911SC as a sure-fire investment bet and currently lists it as the best buy in the Porsche universe.
