Vehicle Detail
For Auction: 1974 VW Thing (AKA: Type 181 Kubelwagon) ---->NO RESERVE<---- I bought this in Arizona in 1999 cause I always wanted one. Planned to do full restore but never get time. This vehicle has been garaged 100% since 1999. I have done some restoration; minor body work (more could/should be done). I had to cover the horrid atomic orange color that some fool painted it, so I sanded and primed it and have one flat coat of O/D Green. The motor has been returned to stock starting with the factory-style exhaust (rare, bought from The Thing Shop, cha-ching). They are factory style pipes, unlike the usual retrofit jobs putting beetle exhaust on (cheesy). Notice that they exhaust through the factory bumper (sweet looking and it sounds sweet, it also doesn't hang under the car). Also notice the factory oil bath air cleaner. Going back to the stock air cleaner and intake setup was a great investment as it made it run like a dream. I think the last time this car actually hit the road was 2006. It has 42,250 miles. The removable top is 'like-new', and the tires are new. See pics. The side apron windows are a bit rough and could use reconditioning. The motor is in near perfect condition, I stripped it down when I got it and put new pistons, cylinders, heads and a new carb on it, but it only really needed the new carb. The seats have been nicely restored and are factory, front and back. While it appears ready to roll, plan on trailering it home because it needs someone to go over everything since it has not been on the road in so long. Floorboards and everything is virtually rust free, ...again, this car (while I have owned it) has never been driven on the road during a Michigan winter. Bump the key after 2 months of sitting in the garage and it starts and sounds terrific.
