Currently Guards Red, the car was originally code 117 Light Yellow. The paint shows well from a few feet away but close inspection reveals some flaws -- the paint is cracked on hood, a few tiny rust bubbles are forming on the passenger door skin and there is chipped paint with minor surface rust around the bottom of the windshield. There are holes in the decklid where a spoiler was once mounted. However, the car is remarkably free of the typical rust and rot that plague the early non-galvanized cars. Floor pans and rockers are original and incredibly solid with no known rust issues (including torsion bar areas). Front pan is also original and shows minor surface rust top and bottom in front of the gas tank; the front suspension mount points are completely solid. Targa top is fiberglass, but the factory folding Targa frame is beneath it. The car is wearing a fiberglass S front bumper and aftermarket rear bumper/valance. The interior is in serviceable condition but could use a freshening. Both front and rear seats are in decent shape, as are the door panels and carpet. Upper dash pad has a few cracks. All gauges, switches, indicators and lights are working properly. Correct steering wheel has a period leather wrap. The speaker in the center of the rear parcel shelf was installed by the dealer when the car was less than a month old. We have a three-ring binder with service records back to new, including the original dealer's invoice and the original Porsche maintenance record book. The car's original owner owned it for 25 years until he gave it to his son-in-law in 1997 with 54,000 documented miles. The son-in-law second owner kept it another five years; when he sold the car in 2002 it had 72,000 miles. The car has been driven very little since 2002. The 2.4 threw a rod in 1987; the original owner had it replaced with a rebuilt 3.0 (the car also saw its one re-paint, the color change to Guards Red, in 1987). In 1998 the car's second owner replaced the 3.0 with a 3.2. The updated rear bumper was also installed in 1998. I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time. The Motronic 3.2 runs well and feels very, very quick in this car. The 915 gearbox feels as good as they ever do. Synchros are good and clutch feels good -- clutch was replaced in the late 1990s and has fewer than 20,000 miles on it. In the late 90s the car also saw some suspension upgrades, including a Weltmeister camber bar, front sway bar and new tie rod ends. Thecar saw new brake calipers and pads front and rear in 2011. Fast, fun car to drive and enjoy as is or remarkably solid starting point for a correct restoration -- easy to undo some of the late 1990s updates. Lots of records and several original keys included.
