By 1969, the GTX had a new look that wasn't as boxy as when it was first unveiled and could pack a serious punch with either the standard 440 or with a 426 Hemi. With only a life span of four years, finding any GTX is tough work, but it is considerably much harder to find one as beautifully and meticulously restored as this 1969 Plymouth GTX.The beneficiary of this incredible restoration, gets this '69 Plymouth GTX that sits today here in an absolutely breathtaking condition. This GTX has so much going for it, it's tough to list it all. Under the hood rests the feared 440 Super Commando that is paired with a Heavy Duty Built 3-speed 727 automatic torque-flite transmission. Topped off with a completely restored interior and a killer Ivy Green Metallic paint scheme, this is one truly unique ride. But before we get too far into the description, lets first look at how this car left the factory by decoding the VIN and fender tag:VIN: RS23L9A137156VIN TAG DECODINGR = Plymouth Belvedere/SatelliteS = Special/GTX23 = 2-door hardtopL = 440CID Hi-Performance9 = 1969 model yearA = Assembled at Lynch Road Plant, Detroit, MI.137156 = Sequential production NumberFENDER TAG19 136411 9A137156917 644 093261 x 6WF8 F8 P6G F8RS23 E86 D32 A02 068541FENDER TAG DECODING:Read from left to right and bottom to topLine 1RS23 = Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite 2-door Hardtop GTXE86 = 440-4 375 HPD32 = Heavy duty 3-speed automaticA02 = October 2, 1968068541 = Vehicle Order NumberLine 2F8 = Ivy Green Metallic exteriorF8 =P6G = Green interiorF8 = Ivy Green Metallic - upper door paintLine 3V1X = Full Black Vinyl Top6W =Line 426 =Line 5917 = 440 cu. in. 375 HP644 = 093 = 727 transmissionLine 619 =136 =411 =9A137156 = VIN*Please Note: This has been decoded to the best of our abilities considering the tag is difficult to decipher. The GTX was advertised from its beginnings as the "Gentleman's" muscle car. And when you take a close look at this '69, it's easy to understand how they came up with the moniker. At the front of the car, a body-width chrome trimmed grille centers a silver "GTX" emblem between four clear headlights, a good looking body-width chrome bumper and clear, square parking lights. The Green and Black hood features two modest hood scoops that warn everyone about what lies under the hood by wearing chrome 440 badging. Down the sides you'll see the black paint accenting the green paint very nicely. Within the black is the Red factory stripe, longitude that gives the car just a little extra pop. As you make your way to the back, more GTX badging can be found on the quarters and on the rear bumper. Another body wide chrome bumper finishes off the look, resting above the dual exhausts. Most people today revere the Hemi as the ultimate Dodge engine' but it's important not to underestimate the 440 Super Commando (seriously, that name alone emanates a powerful, brooding engine) it was easily just as feared as the Hemi. Sure, the Hemi left the plant with 425hp, and the 440 created 375hp. However, the Super Commando peaked its torque curve at 480 lb/ft at only 3200 RPM's while the Hemi created 490 at 4,000 RPM's. That 800 RPM difference created a small but realistic opportunity for a slightly tuned GTX equipped with the 440 to out-run the Hemi if shifted well. Lift the F8-Ivy Green metallic N96 Fresh Air Hood and you'll reveal the professionally rebuilt, correct year 9-24-68, 440 engine. At the top of the carb sits the famous large orange air cleaner that these 440 cars were known for. The air filter rests upon a 4-barrell carburetor that sits on a factory correct looking intake. That carb and intake suck in enough air/fuel mixture to feed this healthy 440 that was Dyno'd at 424hp. The massive engine provides little room for anything else within the engine bay, but in front of the engine is the upgraded aluminum radiator that is responsible for cooling the engine and beside that a period correct looking battery. Speaking of cooling ' let's not forget this GTX comes with Vintage Air Conditioning and a nicely polished compressor that sits up front when you open the hood. The A/C operates off of the original factory controls on the dash. This GTX is also equipped with power front disc brakes and power steering to ensure sheer driving pleasure.Put the GTX on the lift and you'll reveal a beautifully and meticulously well done underside that looks like it has never seen real road time. Under here you'll see that bolted to the 440 V8 is the original numbers matching A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission with a nice 2700 ATI stall converter in it, for a little extra fun, that sends power to a Dana 60 rear axle with the correct 4:10 rear cover tag number hanging off one of the rear-end cover bolts. The transmission has been completely rebuilt with a new B&M torque converter. The special featured A34 Super Track Pak with 4:10 Dana 60 sure grip rear with new bearings is numbers matching. As you'll see in the pictures, they didn't spare much when they were restoring the underside. Each suspension piece is highly detailed. Car has new exhaust system front to back with new Flowmaster mufflers. Every single nut and bolt was either new or refurbished. New tires, wheels, suspension parts, brakes, rotor, calipers, chrome bumper, trim, almost everything was replaced with new parts. The GTX rides on chrome Magnum 500 rims that have been wrapped in new B F Goodrich red-line rubber from Diamond Back Classics. The fronts are 215/70 R15 and nicely stuffed in the rear of the car is 295/ 50 R15Inside the GTX is just as impressive as the rest of the vehicle. Open the driver's side door and you will be greeted by a correct coded all new Green interior. Two bucket seats greet the riders in the front seats, while a bench seat in the rear means five can go for a ride in this very stout muscle car. In front of the driver is a wood grain three spoke wheel that looks fantastic. Beyond that is a 150mph speedometer and the rest of the instrument cluster, and just to the right of that are the controls for the AM radio. Below those controls is the shifter for the 3-speed automatic and a locking middle console that separates the front two seats. Above the passengers is a taught ribbed headliner that shows no signs of sag or wear and finishes off the look of the incredible interior. The sale of this professionally restored GTX includes a copy of the original Broadcast sheet from previous owner, and many receipts also from the previous owner. We pictured these receipts and broadcast sheet in our "extra" section of photos below in the description. No, we didn't take the time to add up the total amount of the receipts, but by the hoard of receipts shown, it's absolutely clear he had some very serious money in this car.The GTX may have had a short production life, but the lucky owners who snagged up the gentleman's muscle car swore by them then, as much as they do now. Don't miss your opportunity to own this gorgeous, nut and bolt rotisserie restored 1969 Plymouth GTX at a mere fraction of the cost that it took to restore it to its former glory.
