Vehicle Detail

This auction is for my 1981 Honda CB900 Custom motorcycle. It has about 34,600 miles on it (I keep driving it periodically), which is only a little over 1,000 miles per year on average. It's in excellent condition--well taken care of for its age. I've just paid the registration fees ($91), so no additional registration fees are due until July 10, 2015. This is the 10-speed shaft-drive model, which I’ve read now has a cult following. The 10 speeds are accomplished with a Hi/Lo dual range subtransmission that allows the operator to "split" any of the five gears in the main transmission for a total of ten driveline ratios. Each gear can be reached through the Hi/Lo rocker-type shifter (see picture). The Hi range effectively acts as an overdrive, dropping your rpm’s by about 600. In Hi range, top gear, at 60 mph my tach reads 4000 rpm; at 75 mph, my tach reads 5000 rpm. The Honda CB900 Custom was manufactured for only three years--1980-1982. In 1983, the slightly larger displacement Honda CB1000 Custom was manufactured--a one-year only model. During my ownership, I've bought/rebuilt/replaced many items, including: · New: choke cable, push/pull throttle cables, both mirrors (OEM, made in Japan--expensive), 3 sets of brake pads, new front tire, spark plugs; valve cover gasket; handlebar grips; clutch lever; and Slipstreamer vented windshield (21" standard height model). · Rebuilt: all 4 Keihin carburetors (new O-rings, gaskets, etc.); and front and rear master cylinders. · Replaced: ignition coils; front brake rotors (previous ones were warped); rear chrome fender and taillight assembly and wiring for same; and rear air suspension pressure indicator. I've also installed: · A Vetter Windjammer IV fairing with a new Slipstreamer vented windshield. Great for long-distance cruising. The fairing is secured on a Vetter frame-mounted rack. · A complete set of Vetter saddlebags and top case. The saddlebags are easily removable by key, and the top case is removable with 4 nuts. Very sturdy setup. Top case holds a full-face helmet plus room for more. · Highway or "crash" bars with folding footpegs. · Manual cruise control throttle lock. Bike specifications: · Air-cooled, 4-stroke, Dual Overhead Cam, Vertical Inline 4 Cylinder Engine. · Compression ratio: 8.8:1 · Maximum horsepower: 84 BHP @ 8,500 rpm (redline: 9,500 rpm) · Maximum torque: 56.4 ft-lb @ 7,000 rpm · Fuel tank capacity: 4.4 U.S. gallons · Oil cooler· Curb weight, full tank (i.e., "wet" weight): 610 lbs. · 4 32-mm Keihin CV carburetors · Electronic pointless ignition · Air-assisted suspension—front and rear · High/low 5th gear ratios: 4.50:1/5.26:1. · Wheelbase: 62.4 in. · Rake/trail: 28.5 degrees/4.5 in. · Seat height: 30.8 in. Mechanically in excellent condition: transmission; all gears are clean (no grinding or noises); engine (smooth, no overheating--stock oil cooler helps a lot); air-assist shocks (no leaking, work great). Cosmetically the bike’s in excellent condition as well: dual mufflers—great chrome, no rusting, pits, etc.; metallic paint on tank in burgundy/maroon with gold is great; front/rear fender chrome is excellent; clean speedo/tach gauges; side covers have all attachment pegs, no cracks; seat cover and foam are fine. Performance results reported in Cycle magazine, September 1980 issue: · Standing start @ 1/4 mile: 12.76 sec. @ 104.89 mph · Engine rpm @ 60 mph: Top gear, low range: 4378 rpm; Top gear, high range: 3745 rpm (my tach read 4000 rpm for 60 mph). So, tested drop in rpm is 633. This improves fuel economy by 16%. Tested fuel economy: Low range riding: 41.8 mpg; High range riding: 48.6 mpg. · Theoretical maximum speed: Low range: 130.2 mph; High range: 152.2 mph · Reported maximum speed: 132 mph The bike comes with a bike cover, and original tools and tool pouch. Bike has never been down, and it shows. Reasonable reserve. No disappointments.
