Vehicle Detail

Please read carefully - this car needs work but could be an enjoyable driver or parts car. You are bidding on a 1995 BMW 318Ti with 109,000 miles. I've had the car for a little over a year, put about 16,000 miles on it and it has been relatively trouble free during that time, but has lately developed some issues which I am not willing to deal with at this point due to lack of time. The PO was a friend of mine who owned it for only a few months before selling to me. I did not pull a CarFax on it, so do not know any history prior to the last 18 months. The Good (by "new" below I mean within the past year): New windshield The ignition ring for the EWS and the key were replaced (this is a common problem). New radiator, water pump (with metal impeller) and hoses New serpentine belt New aftermarket radio with CD player, Bluetooth and remote control New rebuilt starter (needs to be installed) Runs pretty good despite the stuff listed below Only minor visible rust which all seems to be surface Passed CT emissions test in April, 2013 Both window regulators replaced but they are cheap knock off parts from APW so they flex too much and will occasionally throw the windows off track if you go all the way down.A/C works but needs a charge The Bad (all the usual E36 issues for this era plus some other stuff): Sagging headliner Drivers side inside door panel is a mess so needs to be replaced Interior needs some serious cleaning work Someone keyed the paint for about ¾ of the driver's side Other age appropriate dings/chips in the paint There was some front end damage at some point before I had it. Can see it in the hood, grille and the alignment of the left front corner light The shocks on the hatchback are weak – they are fine now because it's warm out, but when it's cold they cannot hold up the hatch I believe the thermostat housing is cracked – there is a coolant leak which seems to emanate from there (please note - the car threw up a bunch of coolant today when I was taking the pictures). I did not look into this, so don't know from where. Heater does not function properly - heater core may be clogged. The fan, fan clutch and shroud are missing - the A/C fan is wired to run when the engine is on The Ugly: May have a blown head gasket. It is strange as the white smoke from the exhaust varies based on outside temperature. When it is cold out, it smokes a lot until the block warms up. When it is warm out, it doesn't smoke at all Developed a weird hesitation issue over the past week, which when it happens makes the check engine light come on for a few seconds. Since this car is pre-OBDII, I don't have the tool to get the codes so cannot speculate on the cause The Bottom Line: Given the coolant issue of today, I would say the car needs to be towed. It does run pretty well despite its issues and the tires and brakes are in decent condition. If you are familiar with the E36 Compacts, they are fun to drive and this one is no exception (although it would be better with a manual trans). In my non-professional opinion it needs more time than money to bring it back to life. It is very low mileage for a 19 year old car. I should also mention that the pictures probably make it look better than it does in person. As the old joke says, it's a "good six foot car-looks good from six feet away". I am selling as-is and there are no refunds or renegotiation when you come to pick it up. I have tried to give a very accurate description of the car so please don't bid if you do not understand its status. Please ask questions if you are not sure :-) There are lots of great parts so if you are just looking for a parts car this is a good choice. Buyer is responsible for pick up. Car can be seen in Westport, CT by appointment. Thanks for bidding.
