Vehicle Detail
This 1992 500SEL was over $100,000 when it was new, and it still drives like a $100,000 car. I think it probably has another couple hundred thousand miles left in it. This car is built like a tank and is in excellent condition for a car its age – or most cars for that matter. It has averaged about 10,000 miles a year, which is fairly low. I’ve owned for the past 15 years and a doctor friend owned it for the years prior to that. He may have purchased it from Mercedes as a certified vehicle. I forget. Until recently, it has been garage kept, even at work.Note: I've just noticed that the car check that ebay runs indicates there are problems with the car's mileage. Don't know where they got their information, but Mercedes has all of the mileage records. It was last serviced by Mercedes with 199,000 and had a $1,300 front-end rebuild. So not to worry about this discrepancy. I am selling it as I just bought another car and have way too many vehicles in my fleet :-) I just put Historical plates on it last year and expected to keep it forever. But there is just no room. The interior is in spectacular shape – like new in most respects as you can see from the pictures. It is black on saddle, which is a beautiful combination. The exterior (black) is in great shape too. I have all of the service records from the original purchase of the car. I won’t go over the car’s detailed specifications as they are extensive and easily Googled. However, it is one of the biggest production cars ever made. It weighs in at 4,343 lbs and is over 17’ long. I am 6’5” and have to put the driver’s seat up to reach the peddles. I could easily fit in the rear seat with me driving if there were two of me. I have at least 3 extra inches of head room in the driver’s seat. This is a very large car, yet my 5’5” daughter says it fits her fine and is easy to drive. It is fast – goes 0-60 in just over 7 seconds and a quarter mile in 15.5 seconds. It gets about 18 MPG in the city and 23 on a trip. I think the pictures best tell the visual tale of this car. I can tell you what is good about this car and some things that should be fixed. The Good: The car has been kept original and drives beautifuly. The leather in the car is in great shape and a rare and beautiful saddle match to the black exterior and interior wood. The seat controls all work as do the seat heaters – the rear seat reclines. There are new OEM floor mats in the car ($200) and the other carpeted components look like new. The wood through out and dash look like new. The head liner is perfect. The radio works great and I have just installed a new amplifier (rebuilt stock) to push it’s 11 speaker Bose system. The brakes only have a couple thousand miles on them. The Michelan MVX4 tires are 17” and have less than 4k miles on them. The present rims are larger than stock and from a 2001 Mercedes – I actually have a second set of 4 of identical 2001 wheels along with the original five 16” stock wheels that will go with the car. The current rims are in great shape. All of the windows and the sliding roof work as they should up and down. All of the instruments work and have original lighting. The engine starts easily and runs smooth. The steering and transmission are in great shape. The car has no fluid leaks. The front end was rebuilt about 3k miles ago by Mercedes. Need to be Repaired: The antenna motor is broken. I have a new OEM antenna ($250) that will be included but I have not installed it. Some of the lights on the Becker radio need to be replaced – I have a back up radio to send in (included with car) and the lights cost about $100 to get replaced. While this is being done, it would be good to put an iPod jack in the radio. The 10 CD player in the trunk does not function – but I would not get it fixed with modern MP3 devices easily plays through the radio and sound great. I’ve been told it is in need of two new flex joints put in the drive shaft. They are about $100 per joint plus installation which is supposed to be easy for DIYS. The compressor on the A/C needs to be replaced at approximately $800. The covering edges on two interior support posts need to be re-glued. I can’t think of much more. This could be a great collector's car with some relatively minor work. It also is reliable enough to serve as basic luxury transportation. Black exterior with a totally beautiful saddle interior. Never saw one like it. That has been my intention over the years, but I have no space for it in my garage. I'd be happy to show this locally. But prefer payment from Paypal or cash. It is listed locally so I reserved the right to stop this auction if it becomes unavailable. Thanks for looking.
