Vehicle Detail

Fully Sorted and Bulletproof: 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sunroof! Porsche experts agree: the 1984-'89 Carrera is the best 911 ever built. It is the last 911 to feature a body style now considered "classic" and the first to incorporate technological advancements such as the vaunted BOSCH Motronic engine management. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Sure, subsequent generations of the 911 yielded good cars, too, but the Carrera struck the perfect balance between old school and jet age. It is a far cry from the hyper-complex, computer-dominated, heavyweight 4-seater offered up by Zuffenhausen today. No, this Carrera is the last user friendly Porsche that can be worked on with hand tools instead of plug-and-play computers. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Not surprisingly, therefore, that the 3.2-liter Carrera smoothly transitioned from contemporary supercar to highly sought-after collectible, coveted by knowledgeable Porsche aficionados worldwide. A "keeper" should be 100% rust and accident free and come with a detailed service history showing it to have enjoyed a pampered life in the care of an enthusiast owner. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The magnificent 1985 Porsche Carrera Sunroof Coupe presented here, VIN *WP0AB0919FS121875*, manufactured in July of 1985, is a prime example of the very desirable "original spec" 3.2-liter Carrera. A US-market car and one of just 1,959 built for the model year, it was first sold by Ferrari-Porsche-Audi North to Mr. JM Blackford on September 13, 1985 and subsequently owned by two other PCA members. The original burgundy vinyl pouch containing all factory manuals, including the fully stamped warranty book as well as the original preferred customer card, still resides in the glove box. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Even the term "extraordinary" would be a bit of an understatement to describe the plethora of documents accompanying the Carrera. More than one hundred and fifty (150!) pages of records, contained in two large, black three-ring binders, have been chronologically filed inside clear sheet protectors. Along with the stamped service book and $8,777.32 in receipts from the fist two owners, there is a huge stack of additional invoices from the last owner, covering the past decade, when the car was driven about 15,000 miles annually, mostly on commutes from Las Vegas to San Bernardino. These service records amount to exactly $39,241,98, for a grand total of $48,019.30. Except for a rebuilt transmission @ 107,900 miles and a clutch job @ 174,221 miles, the bulk of records attests to a fabulously diligent regimen of routine maintenance and replacement of wear items. As Irv Gordon has abundantly proven with his 3-million-mile Volvo P1800, you can indeed keep 'em alive and healthy for the long run if you just adhere to a strict maintenance schedule! This Carrera is a prime example of the build quality that went into the last of the classic air-cooled 911s. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Let's now inspect this fabulous Porsche in more detail, starting with the trunk. The luggage area of a vintage, air-cooled Porsche always yields valuable insight to its overall condition, as neglect tends to manifest itself here first. Here, clean original carpeting and the complete factory tool kit are confidence-inspiring indicators. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Stripped naked, the good news continue. Almost three decades old now, everything we see here is in fine, original condition and clean as a whistle. Unused inflatable spare and factory tire jack are present. And, yes, the trunk light works! Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Better yet, neither the battery area nor the vulnerable "nose" show any signs of corrosion or previous damage. Factory paint label is still attached to the right inner fender. The pristinely preserved undercarriage shows no hint of rust or accident damage, just factory finishes and German steel. Did you expect anything less from this fine 911? The factory's enhanced corrosion-protection includes liberal zinc-plating; even outside of California this Carrera could conceivably last forever. Note that the caramel colored areas are not corrosion, but remainders of the transparent Cosmoline rust protection wax, applied 29 years ago at the factory. Make sure you enlarge them to their full size. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Porsche's sexy and curvacious body is as straight as it gets, with perfect factory gaps and shut lines. There is no indication that this car was ever involved in any kind of fender bender. Guards Red paint is superbly preserved throughout, shiny, without dings, dents or scratches. Imperfections to note are limited to some rock chips on the front valance and hood, as well as some deterioation in the clearcoat on the sunroof and the horizontal part of the rear spoiler. There is one buffed-hrough spot on the left front corner of the roof, all of which still features its factory paint. Wheels are superbly preserved factory Fuchs forged alloys, shod with near new Hankook Super High Speed radials of the correct size 205/55-16 up front and 225/50-16 out back. Let's look inside now! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Ah . . . the man cave! Interior accomodations are luxurious and outright spacious. Even tall drivers and long-legged co-pilots have plenty of room to stretch. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Dash looks all stock. Dash top features a few sun cracks -- the car lived in sunny Las Vegas since '03 -- and a fabric over. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Iconic Porsche 911 gauges are in a beautiful state of preservation, and they all work, even the electric VDO clock! Steering wheel is factory original. No need to mess with perfection! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Power-operated front seats show just a slight patina of age on the leather, but no damage at all, another testament to the tender loving care this car has received. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Those spacious leather rear seats don't look like they've ever been used. Push a small red button and the back rests fold down individually as needed to create additional luggage space. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Ready for a test drive? So are we, but before we take off, let's check out what makes this Porsche tick: its powerful heart! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) As clean and dry as the remainder of the car, the matching numbers 3.2-liter boxer, delivering 207 horses @ 5,900rpm, runs every bit as good as it looks. It never needed any work beyond regular servicing and has rightfully gained its reputation of being bullet-proof. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) There are no odd noises to report, no annoying oil leaks, and there's no exhaust smoke on initial start-up. The entire drivetrain has just been serviced and there's no indication that it will need anything other than regular tune-ups for years to come. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Monday, February 3rd turned out to be a super-nice "winter day" here in our quaint California mission town. Perfect for exercising the German stallion and soaking in some sunshine while doing it. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Piloting this 911 elicits pure joy; it starts, runs, handles, and stops excellently, just as you'd expect it from a Porsche that has been serviced whenever needed, regardless of cost. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Especially compared to a 911 from the early '70s, it's just amazing how sophisticated a 3.2 Carrera really is. Playing with the stereo controls, we've once managed to take off in 3rd gear and the car didn't even complain. Whereas Porsche's 2.2 or 2.4-liter Boxer needs to rev its heart out, the 3.2 just goes like the proverbial bat out of hell, from slightly above idle all the way to redline, determined to devour any road. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Returning home, we once again feel confident in proclaiming the 3.2 Carrera the most perfectly balanced classic Porsche 911 money can buy. Unlike some of its earlier siblings, the 3.2 can easily be enjoyed on a daily basis in the year 2014, if so desired. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Be it as a prestigious everyday sports car or a weekend driver, this Carrera provides unequalled driving enjoyment. Keep it garaged, tuned and detailed, and it will live forever while keeping its value, that's guaranteed! And if ever the time comes to move on, there will be plenty of people longing to become the next proud owner of a classic, red Porsche Carrera with a factory sunroof!
