Vehicle Detail
This is a '67 Camaro SS that has been converted for drag use. The car came to me from an auction awhile ago, and I got it as it sits now with no documentation other than a certificate to obtain a title. In it's current state, the car is not street-legal. (Click on the pictures for a larger view) Here's a video of the car running and driving By decoding the VIN and cowl plate, the numbers indicate that this could be a real SS. It looks like the last time all the safety inspection tags were updated was sometime in 2000, so that gives a good estimation of how long ago the car was put together. Included in the pictures are all the ID and safety plates I could snap pictures of. With a little TLC it can be a great car again. It was purchased it in Utah, and it seems to have spent most of it's time inside because the amount of rust is minimal. The panels are straight although the paint seems like it could have been done a little better. You can see some defects under the paint in spots starting to come through and there are scratches and some contaminates, but they're hard to notice from a few feet back. The car has a 6-point roll cage in it with a harness bar. The interior is mostly gutted, the front seats have been replaced with racing seats and the back seats were completely removed and have been cleanly blocked off. The HVAC system and wipers have also been removed. The rear was tubbed well, and the trunk holds two batteries and the fuel cell. All the windows work to my knowledge, but the rears are sticky. All the exterior lights work with the exception of the turn signals, the bulb holders are there but they're disconnected. It has a Autometer tach with shift light and full instrumentation. The hood is fiberglass cowl induction. The engine is not original to the car. It was sold to me as a 454 but when decoding the engine numbers it's more likely it's a 396/402 but the block numbers could denote either. It may be stroked higher, I'm not sure. The engine is definitely built though. It sounds like it has an aggressive cam in it, high compression and I was told it requires race gas. It has an Holley 4 barrel carb on it which are rated somewhere around 700cfm, looks like an earlier double-pumper and the choke plate has been removed. Under the carb is a spacer and Weiand high-rise manifold. It has an electric fuel pump, and external fuel filter which is fed by a the fuel cell in the trunk, all lines are AN. There's a FPR mounted on the fender in the engine bay, and analog pressure gauges on the cowl and fuel rail. Ignition is handled by an Mallory distributor and a MSD system with 2-stage RPM adjustment mounted in the passenger footwell. The headers are wrapped long tube, and the exhaust exits through two glasspacks before the rear tires. There are dual electric cooling fans as well as an external cooler. The engine has strong compression and it starts right up and maintains idle. Oil pressure at idle is a solid 60psi. The whole driveline is highly modified. I'm not sure exactly what transmission it's equipped with, the headers and shield around the case make it really difficult to pull any numbers off it. The things I do know about the tranny though is that it's a 3-speed auto with reverse, manual valve body, stall speed is around 2500rpm and it's also equipped with a trans-brake. The rear end looks like an aftermarket or custom Ford 9" with adjustable coilovers and ladder bars. It has Wilwood disc brakes all the way around with braided stainless brake lines. There are Mark Williams high torque axels, center line wheels, and Mickey Thompson Sportsman radials. The tires are very dry and cracked. They will need to be replaced, but do hold air. The fuel and fan switches are reversed. There is a small oil leak at the back of the engine that only shows up as a few drips after some running and it seems the trans pan gasket is seeping as well.
