Vehicle Detail

Intro: For sale is this overall very nice condition 1990 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 4 (all wheel drive) manual transmission Cabriolet that could use a few repairs. It has 102,000 miles, engine runs strong, transmission shifts great, but there is a significant oil leak. More details in the “Mechanical” section about that. This is my personal “fun” vehicle, clean title in my name, and I am the third owner. I have a pile full of receipts documenting its maintenance. Most Cabriolets have an automatic transmission. The combination of being a Cabriolet with five speed manual transmission AND being all wheel drive is very difficult to find. Car looks real sweet in black of course too. Videos: Three video clips are provided to better show the condition of this 911. Please click or copy and paste the link to view the clip. The first one shows a 100% cold start in the garage. It starts right up, first try every time and idles nicely. Second clip is of the car being driven in its current state. Engine of course runs great with proper oil pressure and temperature. Car will drive the speed limit but clutch does slip. Third clip is walk around to show the cosmetic condition and vehicle idling. Again, copy and paste the below addresses in a new page to view. http://youtu.be/TiCGoieAU98http://youtu.be/HQT-wJiXJ6Qhttp://youtu.be/Mza7Jgz-wNw Images: 90+ high resolution images of this 911 are hosted via PhotoBucket. Exterior: The finish on this 911 is VERY presentable and above average for the age and mileage. As a disclaimer, my father was an automotive painter for 40+ years, him and I have restored a couple cars together, and I am cursed with a very critical eye for paint. All of the finish on this 911 looks to be the original factory applied paint except for the right front corner of the bumper which looks good but a trained eye can notice it is slightly less glossy. The finish is very glossy throughout the car and has a lack of texture. It has been very well taken care of. Paint wear/flaws include a few limited chips/nicks on the front and other expected areas like the front of the rear wheel bulges, minor scuff along driver rear wheel lip that could be buffed out, back left bumper section has a scuff which most of it could be buffed out but there is some spider webbing of the paint there, two similar limited/minor spots about on the center section of the rear bumper by the license plate that are difficult to notice, a couple shallow bubbles around the windshield molding (super common, molding could be removed and area sanded/resprayed), and that is mainly it. Due to the paint being original there is a lack of common repaint flaws like drips, fish eyes, cracking, paint over moldings, overspray, etc. The paint truly is very nice and impressive for the age. It shows very well but again is not perfect. There is still some dust in the door jambs, engine bay, etc. from my a trip I took it on so it could use some detailing. It could use a light buffing with compound and polish as well which would even bring it up another notch. The body is very straight and again very well taken care of. There is a lack of significant dings. Body of course is very solid as well. Door jambs, under body, trunk floor, all corners, engine bay, and etc. all are very straight, solid, and look real nice. Convertible top is excellent with no repairs to it and an excellent back window that zips down. Lenses overall are good but the back tail light section is somewhat faded and has a few cracks but is functional. Rear spoiler works correctly. Side windows are great. Windshield does have a impact from a stone. It is a small area less than the size of a pencil eraser so the insurance company sent me $60 to have it repaired by a glass company, which I will pass on to the next owner. Doors, trunk , engine cover all open and close real nice/properly. Gas struts for the trunk and engine cover are of course weak. Porsche canvas convertible top cover and tonneau covers are included and in very nice condition. Wheels are upgraded 2 piece Momo 17” that look real pretty. There are some minor stains on the polished lip part. An extra Momo rim with tire is included. Tool kit and etc. are present. Side skirts are good but the weather stripping could be replaced as they have shrunk. All in all though, very presentable looking machine in unmolested condition. Interior: The interior on this 911 is in overall nice condition and shows minor wear in typical areas. Most notable wear would be the leather seats show use. Dash is very nice with the typical but very minor warping on the passenger side, no cracks though. Steering wheel is good, shift knob shows wear, door panels very nice, carpet overall is nice and would look better with a minor cleaning, back seats are great, etc. An upgraded CD unit is present with upgraded speakers and amplified mounted in the trunk. Interior is of course very comfortable. No odd smells. Very presentable interior that does not really need attention. Mechanical: This 911 has been taken very well care of cosmetically and mechanically but now an oil leak has gotten worse and should be addressed. It is difficult to tell where it is leaking from: Oil tank (hoses?) by the passenger rear tire is leaking; somewhere at the very rear center part of the motor near a black hose in the back looks to be leaking; possibly the passenger valve cover; and quite possibly the rear main seal might be leaking as of late the clutch has been slipping and feels as though it is due to oil being on it. The 911 is drivable but really shouldn’t be driven. I am a “do it yourself” kind of guy experienced with classic sports cars (ex: rebuilt carbs, water pump, valve adjustment, timing belts, etc. on my Ferrari 308 last winter) and would consider doing the necessary repairs on this 911 myself but just do not want to devote the time to it with how my schedule has been as of late. That is why it is offered for sale. A fellow “do it yourself’er” should be able to do the repairs and get in this 911 at an excellent price. Someone that takes the car in to have it done professionally should still be able to come in a few thousand under what the car would be valued at. My wife and I took this 911 from Wisconsin out to the West Coast (Washington and Oregon) for an adventure this summer. We put on about 5,000 miles. It can be very dependably driven and is a blast to drive but now it needs the oil leak taken care of. The 3.6 engine is original to the car, starts right up the first time every time, has all the power it should, excellent oil pressure, runs nice and cool even in traffic at 90+ degrees, and does not smoke/does not seem to consume oil but rather leak it. Regular Mobil 1 oil changes, recent plugs and wires, and more. The exhaust/heat exchangers are in nice condition and sound aggressive. The brakes stop this car real hard. One of the better stopping cars I have experienced. Front rotors sometimes give a little vibration pending how they are feeling it seems but otherwise are great. Recent ABS servicing. The drivetrain also is very nice on this car. Trans shifts very smoothly without any grinding. Clutch of course is slipping now (due to oil leak it seems) so that will either need to be cleaned/degreased or replaced. A/C system seems fine and is all there but there is a small hole in the metal line, under the driver side skirt, due to oxidation that a shop could repair, so it currently does not hold pressure. Both differentials seem great and all wheel drive system performing appropriately. Steering system and suspension feels great. Wipers, odometer, headlights, speedometer, power seats, etc. function appropriately. Tires are very aggressive and staggered Bridgestones that are nice and sticky with about 50%+ tread left. The convertible top opens and closes exactly as it should and has had some maintenance performed. All in all very well taken care of vehicle that is strong mechanically but does need an oil leak addressed. Conclusion: These 964 911’s are a blast to drive. The engine sounds amazing and is a huge improvement from the SC and 80’s Carrera. The extra torque and horsepower give it a super usable and fun powerband. The handling and braking performance is excellent as well, very large improvement from the SC. In a performance standpoint, this 964 is more fun to drive than the ’86 930 I recently had. I am not sure if it is the tires on this example but it easily out handles and out brakes the 930 and has a much more useable powerband. Driving with the top down of course aids to the driving fun. Black is an excellent color for 911’s and the tan interior compliments it. This is an example that one can just stand in the garage and stare at and admire. Overall this is a very presentable machine that could use some repair and then be enjoyed for quite some time as it is. With the consideration of this 911’s very nice cosmetic condition, overall well maintained and well sorted mechanically but also considering repairs are needed, and the hard to find combination of being a Carrera 4 Cabriolet with manual transmission, I have tried to set the price fairly at $17,250.
