Vehicle Detail
Up for sale for the first time in 27 years is a 1978 Trans Am. It has a Pontiac 400 (W72) engine with a 4 speed transmission. The VIN breakdown is as follows: 2 PontiacW Trans Am 87 Sport Coupe Z 400 4bbl 8 1978 N Norwood Oh 152598 Serial # When I purchased this car in 1986 the original engine was gone. I have located, installed and rebuilt a correct 1978 W72 Pontiac 400 engine (block # 28L151453 x7), but it came out of an automatic instead of a 4 speed. The only difference was in the carburetor kick down linkage. I had the car painted with new decals installed in 1988 and as you can see it still maintains a high shine. This car has not sat outside overnight more than 10 times since then and has never been driven in the winter months let alone any snow. It has always been stored in a heated garage under a car cover. Unfortunately, you can see from some of the close-ups that there are some scratches in the paint, but it looks fabulous from 10 feet away. There is one small bubble about the size of a dime in the paint on the passenger side rocker panel that showed up about 6 months after the paint was done and in 25 years it has gotten no worse. With 25 year old paint, you don’t have to worry about someone hiding a bad body under new paint. This car looks great because it is. The trunk pictures show that it is extremely clean without any surface rust. The floorboards are solid as well. Everything works in the interior with the exception of the clock. I installed an 8,000 rpm tachometer and 160 mph. speedometer out of an older model Trans Am. The speedometer was broken when I bought the car so I do not know the correct mileage. The car was in long-term storage from 1992 to 2003. Since then I have put countless hours installing new parts and making it road worthy. Here is a list of equipment added since 2003: · · Tires, Battery, Belts, and Hoses · Carburetor · Pickup coil and ignition module · Spark Plugs, Distributor Cap, Rotor, Spark Plug Wires · Master Cylinder, Wheel Cylinders, ALL Brake lines and hoses · Fuel Lines and Hoses · New Aluminum Radiator and Heater Core · Water pump and Fan Clutch · Starter and Alternator · Carpet, Package Shelf, Door Handles, Sill Plates · Factory exhaust tips As you can see I have put a lot of work into it. The car is reliable and runs great! The rest of the interior is completely original. The dash and console are in excellent shape with no cracks. The seats are not ripped and still look great after 35 years, unlike the cloth that usually showed dirt and became matted. It could use a new headliner cover. The board is still there and in good shape it just needs a new covering. The clutch doesn’t slip, but grabs a little. This is a great car and always gets lots of attention when it’s out. It has a great sounding dual exhaust that always brings a smile to my face when I run up through the gears. It handles well and stops straight. I’ve got some extra parts that go with it including the front license plate bracket and another nose cone with grills that I planned to put on the garage wall. I have owned and enjoyed this car for 27 years, but I find myself not driving it as much as I should and it’s time to let someone else love it. I am not putting a reserve on it, I am serious about selling it, so don’t think I am waiting with a high reserve to “see if it makes it” I need a non-refundable deposit within 3 days of $500 and the balance to be paid when it is picked up. I highly recommend that you come and look at it or have it inspected before purchase. That is a good idea on anything you buy. This is a 35 year old vehicle. It does not have a warranty. With that said, I would have no issues driving it home. I know I don’t have a high Ebay transaction number, but I have had this account since 2002 (ptaf = Pontiac Trans Am Fund), I just do not use Ebay much. Please call me with any questions: 248-444-6883
