Vehicle Detail
This is a great little entry level musclecar for someone who is looking for a nice little project car to drive while you tinker and restore. This car is a real GTO but does not have the correct engine (but does have a 1975 400 V-8), otherwise the transmission and differential are the numbers matching original units. It runs and drives real well and looks nice as is at 10 foot, but also has some great potential to be refurbished further which would only enhance the value of this classic piece of American Muscle. This is a great driver and just needs a little TLC as it sits to make it a fun daily driver. Now I should qualify that usually "driver" quality on eBay usually means piece of crap. Let's be clear this is a really solid car, but by no means a trailer queen either, hence a great car to drive, maybe take to local shows and cruise ins as you fix it up. The car collects lots of attention whether it's cruising down the street or parked. Finish Grade = D+: Teal Metallic paint is 10 year old acrylic enamel paint job that while has some issues, actually looks really nice at 10 feet, and frankly even up close. Re-paint was pretty thorough and there are few signs of the original Quezal Gold Metallic metallic paint. There is a run on the driver’s door, some “light parking lot/storage damage” on the passenger front bumper (paint chipped, no body damage) and some minor scratches chips throughout the car. To put it in perspective, this car has been sitting for about 10 years, with the last owner occasionally starting it up, taking it for a ride and then putting it back in the barn once or twice a year. Most of the damage is little storage accidents (paint scratches and chips) from being stored in close quarters with other cars. There is some dirt in the paint on the rear quarter panel where it looks like someone blew dust out of the trunk or something before the paint dried. However, shine/luster is pretty good and looks as good in person as it does in the pictures. Pretty decent driver quality and shows alright despite my "cruel spirited grade" and run down of the details. Body Grade = B-/C+: Car looks to have all its original factory sheet metal. There is some minor rust bubbling on the passenger side rear quarter behind the tire, and a bubble spot on the right rear of the hood (see photos). One other issue with the hood is that aftermarket hood pins have been installed and the factory latch mechanism has been removed from the core support. If I was going to keep it I'd source the latch and replace it. Easily found from Pontiac used parts retailers such as Sonic Motors here in Michigan who handle used parts for Pontiacs. The trunk lid is solid but has been repaired, no signs of bubbling but a credit card style fridge magnet has slight adhesion. Front sheet metal is clean and appears free of repair and rust. Doors are clean and straight. Driver’s floorboard has couple rust through spots (see photo); otherwise all the floorboards are solid. Car was originally from South Carolina Trim Code info: ST 72 23537 A 11918 BDY TR 253 A 5218 53 B PNT 03A 188319 360249 It breaks down as follows: 72 = 1972 2 = Pontiac 35 = LeMans/GTO 37 = 2 door hardtop A = Atlanta, GA 11918 = seq. # TR 253 = Saddle Morrokide Bench Seat A52 = Bench Seat 53 = body color Quezal Gold Metallic B = Black Vinyl Top 03A = build date March 1st week 188319 & 3602499 = (Unknown RPO Codes???) VIN Reads 2D37T2A168452 2 = Pontiac D = Series Number 37 = 2 door Hardtop T= Engine Code 400 V-8 2 = 1972 model year P = Pontiac MI A = Atlanta GA 168452 = sequential number I have the original PHS documents as well, supporting the car is a true GTO with a clear Michigan title. Frame Grade = A: Is straight and free of any rust or scale, no signs of any metal repair Bumpers Grade = B-: Front Endura Bumper is straight and free of damage however there is a paint chip in right front bumper. Rear is original, straight and free of dents but some light patina has started. Bright work Grade = B: All original stainless is present and is in great shape requiring only light buffing to restore. Door handles are original with some patina, but function well. Glass Grade = B+: Side Glass is all original A01 Soft Ray Glass with correct date codes (RPO 531). Front windshield is free of chips or cracks and is an aftermarket replacement with the antenna in the windshield. Rear window is an original C50 option code defroster unit but not original to this car or hooked up either. All weather-stripping and window "fuzzies" are in good shape and in driver quality with overspray from a poor masking job Interior C+: Interior at a glance looks pretty good. Someone made a rather amateur interior color change. It is currently black but was originally Saddle (Code 253) with a bench seat. Previous owner installed some ProCar Bucket Seats (aftermarket) that are like new and function as designed. Other options include 461 Custom Cushion Steering wheel missing with a vintage Grant Racing wheel in its place, which is in good shape some typical wear on the rubber rim/grip and no horn button, (driver quality), 481 AM Radio is missing with a Kenwood tape deck installed I have not inspected close enough to see if dash has been cut to install. Radio currently not wired in, unsure if it works. Dash pad is covered with a carpet pad and someone installed black vinyl/leather over the rest of the padded dashboard to perhaps cover the color or some cracking in the dash.. It looks ok, but honestly I would pull the unit and restore it since they are so easy to pull out as one unit. Dash features "idiot lights" with an aftermarket small tachometer that’s been installed in the factory in-dash pod where a clock or factory tach would go. Lenses on gauge pods are clear and clean, fuel gauge works. Door panels have been custom covered in cloth velour, and rear panels are black. Headliner is black looks good, sail panels and package tray are warped but black in color, NEW looped black carpet. Missing ash tray but the cigarette lighter is tested and works. All weather-striping and window fuzzies are original and in fair/driver condition. Wheels Grade = C: Original Pontiac style 15 X 7 Rally II (oringinally 14 x 7 RPO 474) steel rims that with original factory tin “arrowhead” center caps and new aftermarket Chrome steel lug nuts, and very good wheel trim rings. One wheel has a pretty good dent in it, not sure if it could be repaired. Tires Grade = C-: Dry rotted Cooper GT Qualifier Radial white letter tires, on three wheels, one Uniroyal Tiger Paw on another tire. Car features P215/65R15 size tire in the front and rear. Good tread but will need replacement if you plan to drive it much in the near future due to age Suspension Grade = OK: Features factory 501 Power steering with variable ratio. Looks to be all original equipment with factory front and rear stabilizer bars. Vehicle tracks straight, with a firm but comfortable ride. Exhaust Grade = C- : Dual exhaust, Factory Cast Iron manifolds solid 2.25 inch pipes (not mandrel bent), into Turbo Style mufflers. No leaks......nice tone, but rusty from being in storage! Rear-end Grade = OK: Factory 10 bolt rear-end with 3.08:1 rear axle ratio. Factory correct, original rear differential option. (Numbers matching) Unit is free of leaks, no noises or clunks, and operates as designed. Ignition Grade = A+: Stock appearing factory HEI style distributor has been installed and starts and runs without missing, new wires, cap/rotor and plugs. Air Conditioning/Heater Grade = D-: Originally equipped with RPO582 Air Conditioning option. AC compressor and front brackets where missing from car when purchased. All in dash components are present, vacuum diverters work as designed, fan is operational and heater blows warm. original condensor is in place Transmission Grade = OK: Original numbers matching 400 THM automatic transmission with PX stamp with 1A168452 sequential number stamped in case. Transmission is free of any leaks. I don't know anything about the transmission internals but it shifts and functions well, fluid is clear and clean. Brakes Grade = B: Factory equipped with 502 Power Front Disc brakes. Brakes are in good working order, new front pads, and rear shoes and hardware recently installed. Engine Grade = B: Original 400 was missing when I purchased the car. Currently has 1975 YH 400 V-8 with 5C Heads and has an Edelbrock Aluminum intake with Performer (AFB style) carb and Mickey Thompson valve covers. Carb has been rebuilt and has had an electric choke kit installed. New plugs and wires and oil change as well. The motor is free of any noises or knocks, and there is no smoke upon start-up cold or warm, and is free of any oil leaks. Engine has that classic Chris Craft like Pontiacs have and pulls a steady 25 inches of vacuum at idle. Engine pulls well under acceleration, no black smoke, and carburetor responds well. I gave it a decent "used" car detail job under the hood that won't enbarass you at a car show or cruise in. Summary: This car is "10 footer" that looks great driving down the road, and is presentable for most local car shows or cruises. It is a very nice car to drive with smooth acceleration, and clean comfortable cabin. The performance idle through the turbo mufflers makes it a hit at the cruise in or at the stop light. The car has the numbers matching Drivetrain which is a real plus with an original style 400 block. Ride is firm, but comfortable for a long drive but will require new tires. Operation is very reliable and without issue and the engine pulls hard off idle up to 5000 rpm. It is a lot of fun to kick down at a roll as the car sets you back in the seat. The suspension launches straight with no wheel hop when you “mat it” and spins the tires without brake torquing. The car as is would make a great, reliable daily driver that would be a blast to drive every day to work as a relic rod! THE CAR LOOKS GREAT as is, but as you fix some things to make it more original, it will only like nicer and improve it's value! It really is a fun car to drive with its throaty exhaust and excellent power. This car offers a lot of potential at an affordable price. Some paint and body work will only improve the value of this car, but if you had to wait a year to save up for paint there is no shame in driving as is because it looks pretty good! If you are a paint guy, you could easily drive and enjoy this car now and then come winter, repaint it yourself and be ready for the next season. Or you could give it a paint job and just turn it over and make some money. I would love to see the car restored to original color paint and interior. This would easily triple the selling price of this car, however it also is an excellent canidate for a resto-mod too. I think you can drive this car literally anywhere right now as is, perhaps after you picked up a set of tires. So if doing a full restoration or building a “bad news” street terror is outside your skill–level or budget, but you’re looking for a great muscle car, then this is the car for you. When you consider the full restoration/numbers matching cars run $30K plus and most of the cars below $9K need lots of work just to get running, let alone restore the body. This car is complete, runs and drives great, is reliable, has a very solid body and makes a nice base to build from but enjoy the day you buy it. Simply put, it's a great value! Questions.....call me at 231-935-3840 ask for Reggie. I have tried to describe the car as honestly and clearly as possible to give you a clear picture of what it is, and help you plan a budget if you were to buy it. That said……it’s an old car and is sold as is with no implied warranty.
