Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is a very nice 1976 Pontiac Trans Am with 72,311 original miles. I am the third owner of this vehicle and the second owner is a friend of mine. I purchased it back in 1995 and if I recall correctly it had around 66,XXX miles on it then – that’s under 6,000 miles in 17 years. I last drove it to the car wash on Sunday, 07-29-2012 and it started right up and ran great. As I wiped it down in the parking lot, there was a crowd that had gathered – that’s normal for this car. This Trans Am has always been an adult owned car that has always been parked inside a climate controlled garage. This Trans Am was also originally a factory 455 HO, four speed car, with a rare 160 MPH Speedo / 8,000 RPM Tachometer package, A/C and power windows with rear defroster fan in the very rare Goldenrod Yellow (no decals) with original black vinyl interior. For reasons unknown to all, the first owner replaced the factory 455 HO motor with a Chevy 454 CI, big block, four bolt motor (Sadly, we do not know where the original motor is). Since the Chevy intake is in a different place than to Pontiac motor, the shaker hood scoop was fastened to the hood frame for clearance (that is why it sits higher than normal). The Borg-Warner Super T-10 is original, as is the remainder of the car with the exception of the 1979 WS6, 15x8 Snowflake wheels. The Trans Am flares, ground effects and original honeycomb wheels were not put back on the car after it was re-painted and were sold years ago by the second owner. It also does not have a spare tire or jack in the trunk. I had the 454 rebuilt less than 5,000 miles ago (1996) by GM Master Mechanic and professional engine builder, Mike Bodine. I had it bored to 468 CI, with flat top, BRC alloy blower pistons, forged crank, a 280 Competition Cams and oval port heads with an Edlebrock intake and Holley 750 mechanical and a high flow fuel pump. I re-built this motor with the intention of putting a ATI supercharger on it but haven’t had time in my life to get to that yet. This was not a cheap or a budget engine build. If you were to finish this complete engine project and add the correct supercharger set-up to it, this motor is projected to easily and reliably make around 600 HP at the rear wheels. Regardless, it currently runs very strong for a normally aspirated, big block and has absolutely no problem breaking the rear tires loose and completely roasting them well into second gear if you are inclined to do so. It starts and runs reliably on pump gas and does not use or burn oil. NOTE: This is a rather serious adult toy and probably would not make a good first car for a 16 year old, new driver. YES, the paint on this car is every bit as nice in person as it appears to be in the photos. This car was re-painted its factory Goldenrod Yellow color by Chamber’s Brothers Body Shop here in Kansas City and they opted then not to put any decals, flares or ground effects back on the car. At that time they only replaced the driver’s side quarter panel. The body was and still is all steel and is extremely straight, with no noticeable dents, but has the few chips and scratches that can be seen in the photos. The interior is very nice, with slight wear starting to show on the edges of the driver’s seat. The remainder of the seats and center console look very nice. The dash, gauges and headliner are in excellent shape as is the dash and door panels. It has an older Alpine stereo head unit that works but has seen better days. As far as I know, this car has never been smoked in – at least not by the last two owners. It shows no evidence of such and has no strange smells inside. Here are a few things that have been replaced / upgraded on this Trans Am: · Sub-frame connecters. · Rancho front coil springs, rear leaf springs and shocks. · Hooker ceramic coated headers with three inch true duals exhaust. · Hurst Competition Shifter. · Rebuilt 3:90 Limited slip, 10 bolt rear end. · New four core radiator. · New fuel tank. · New Fuel lines. · New Emergency brake cable. · 1979 WS-6 Snowflake Wheels. · Battery less than a year old. I’m being fairly critical here, but if I were going to keep this car and had the extra time, here are the things I’d consider fixing, changing or replacing on this car - to make it closer to “perfect”: · Replace the front carpet - the driver’s side is worn through and shows holes in spots. · The front floor pans are starting to show rust and will likely need to be replaced in the next few years. To my knowledge, there is no through rust yet, but it is showing. · Sand out the surface rust spots in trunk and repaint. To my knowledge, there is no through rust here either, but surface rust it is showing (see photos). · Replace the belt molding on the window on the driver’s door (see photo). · I did notice a very small leak that has started (probably transmission) – it left a quarter size spot on the garage floor after being parked over the past four months. · 1976 Trans Am’s already set quite low from the factory and only had about 5 ½ inches of ground clearance. The Rancho front coil springs are awesome and make the car’s stance look incredible, but they lowered the front end about another inch, which has causes the headers to drag on occasion. One of the headers had to be patched from a leak caused by one of these scrapes. I’d consider putting the stock coil springs back in or switching to shorty headers. · Install an A/C compressor to get the air conditioning working. Big blocks put off a bunch of heat when they run for a while, you’ll eventually want A/C this car. · Some sort of new stereo head unit. · Although they are in good shape, the tires are getting old and probably should be replaced before any long drives across country. Make no mistake, in 1976 the Trans Am was definitely THE car to own. Of the total 46,701 Trans Am’s that were built in the model year only 7,099 were 455 HO, four speed cars. Because it was a less popular color, the Goldenrod Yellow Trans Am’s were actually quite rare. These second generation, F-bodies have already started to climb in value and are projected to continue doing so. Another fully restored 1976 Trans Am, similarly optioned also in the ultra-rare Goldenrod Yellow, with only 57K miles sold at Barrett Jackson’s a couple of years ago for over $45,000! As stated before, this Trans Am is looks and runs very nicely and will turn heads wherever you drive it and it sounds fantastic (see video). It is an awesome car, but it is not perfect or a trailer queen – look carefully at the high resolution photos with the link provided. I’ve attempted to show every chip of blemish I could see on the car. I’ve also provided two links to YouTube videos. One video is of a walk around of the car and the second video is of it starting and running. I would have made longer videos of the car to post here, but it was literally 105 degrees here when I shot them. I have a clear Missouri title in-hand and the original 1976 owner’s manual. I love this car and will probably regret selling it ten years from now. I just don’t have any spare time in my life right now to tinker with it or drive it. Please know that I don’t need to sell this car – as they say its “For Sale”, not “On Sale”. I will not ship this vehicle and since it only gets about 8 mpg you’ll probably choose to have it couriered to your location. I will make myself available for your courier to pick this vehicle up at my residence or a nearby location that is best for loading it.
