I acquired this beauty earlier this year from an elderly couple who owned the car since 1979 right here in Central PA. The gentleman who owned it told me the car never saw salt or snow except for the first winter he owned it in 1979. The underbody and overall condition of the car testify to the excellent condition you see in the pictures. It has a little over 67,600 ORIGINAL miles, which is documented on the title. This beauty has been pampered and garage kept since new. In the glove compartment, I found a notebook journal showing many maintenance activities since the early 1980’s. The car has been very well preserved and maintained and regularly driven. I wouldn’t be afraid to drive this anywhere, since it was routinely driven and kept up with. Beginning in the late 70’s many GM cars interchanged engines between divisions….but not the case here. Under the hood is a powerful and well-designed Pontiac 301 V-8. The car runs and drives excellent and gets plenty of looks. The car tracks straight and brakes don’t pull…and rides nice and smooth. The steering is tight and all suspension is in good order. Get in and drive anywhere! Even the A/C still works! Exterior: The exterior is in EXCELLENT condition…the color is a very striking Jet Black. The condition reflects the fact it was garage kept since day one. The chrome and the bright work still shine brilliantly, including the paint. Due to the paint problems GM encountered in the late 70’s, the car was repainted in recent years. To my knowledge, there is no bondo anywhere except in the right front fender, which was an old dent repair when the gentleman bought it in 1979. There is no rust repair anywhere and sheetmetal is excellent. To be picky, the paint job is very nice but not perfect. No runs or overspray or orange peel, but nonetheless you can tell it’s been repainted. Not sure how else to describe it. However, it is certainly show-worthy as-is. The paint work itself isn’t bad…but just seems like maybe with a little more wet sanding it would take the finish to the “next level”. Regardless, the finish is shiny and has a nice luster and is more than adequate as-is unless you are looking for a 100-point, concours Barrett-Jackson quality. The undercarriage is very solid and only has “surface scale” in a few areas. Frame and floor pans are extremely solid. Chrome still shines very nice and very presentable. The only notable imperfection in the chrome is a small ding in the right section of the front bumper. You have to look to find it (see picture). Underneath the doors and trunk lid are solid and in great shape. I have many more pictures of the car (including the frame/underbody) which I can email upon request. Overall, the exterior is in very good condition. Even all 4 headlights are 100% factory original! In my opinion, this is a turn-key car and needs NOTHING. Interior: The interior is also in great condition and has no evidence of any smoke smell. Except for the headliner, it is 100% original and very clean. It is like stepping back into 1978 again. It even smells brand new. The seats feel, look, and smell brand new….they are very comfortable and clean. The door panels and armrests are still in great shape too. The dash pad is in great shape without any cracks. The trunk is also clean and very original. It includes the original jack too. Headliner was replaced a few years ago. Mechanical: The following was done in recent times: -New tires -Inspection through August 2013 -Front brake rotors turned (this fall) -A/C converted to R-134 -Transmission rebuilt to factory specs (2008) -Coolant tested to proper freeze point (this fall) -New A/C vacuum switches in dash (this fall) -Lube, oil, and filter As stated previously, the car runs beautifully and has lots of power. The engine and Turbo-Hydramatic 200 transmission is smooth as silk with no odd noises. Engine runs great and does not burn any oil. The transmission fluid is pink, as it was rebuilt a few years ago. There are no major leaks to speak of underneath the car. I notice a small drop of oil on the garage floor from sitting overnight, but nothing of concern. This will make a great vehicle for the next car enthusiast. It drives like a new car. You wouldn't believe it was a 35 year old car! Even the A/C blows cold and heater is good and hot. The clock is the only thing that does not work. Overall: If you are looking for a great example of a beautiful, solid, reliable, very clean classic Pontiac Grand Prix in great shape, this one’s for you. It runs and drives nicely and will make a very nice classic for you. Drive it and take it to the show! I get compliments everywhere it goes. 1978 Pontiac Grand Prix / Well documented / 67k original miles / 100 pics / Excellent Condition
Offered for auction is this beautiful, well-preserved 78 Pontiac Grand Prix. I acquired this beauty earlier this year from an elderly couple who owned the car since 1979 right here in Central PA. The gentleman who owned it told me the car never saw salt or snow except for the first winter he owned it in 1979. The underbody and overall condition of the car testify to the excellent condition you see in the pictures. It has a little over 67,600 ORIGINAL miles, which is documented on the title. This beauty has been pampered and garage kept since new. In the glove compartment, I found a notebook journal showing many maintenance activities since the early 1980’s. The car has been very well preserved and maintained and regularly driven. I wouldn’t be afraid to drive this anywhere, since it was routinely driven and kept up with. Beginning in the late 70’s many GM cars interchanged engines between divisions….but not the case here. Under the hood is a powerful and well-designed Pontiac 301 V-8. The car runs and drives excellent and gets plenty of looks. The car tracks straight and brakes don’t pull…and rides nice and smooth. The steering is tight and all suspension is in good order. Get in and drive anywhere! Even the A/C still works!
Exterior:
The exterior is in EXCELLENT condition…the color is a very striking Jet Black. The condition reflects the fact it was garage kept since day one. The chrome and the bright work still shine brilliantly, including the paint. Due to the paint problems GM encountered in the late 70’s, the car was repainted in recent years. To my knowledge, there is no bondo anywhere except in the right front fender, which was an old dent repair when the gentleman bought it in 1979. There is no rust repair anywhere and sheetmetal is excellent. To be picky, the paint job is very nice but not perfect. No runs or overspray or orange peel, but nonetheless you can tell it’s been repainted. Not sure how else to describe it. However, it is certainly show-worthy as-is. The paint work itself isn’t bad…but
just seems like maybe with a little more wet sanding it would take the finish
to the “next level”. Regardless, the finish is shiny and has a nice luster and is more than adequate as-is unless you are looking for a 100-point, concours Barrett-Jackson quality. The undercarriage is very solid and only has “surface scale” in a few areas. Frame and floor pans are extremely solid. Chrome still shines very nice and very presentable. The only notable imperfection in the chrome is a small ding in the right section of the front bumper. You have to look to find it (see picture). Underneath the doors and trunk lid are solid and in great shape. I have many more pictures of the car (including the frame/underbody) which I can email upon request. Overall, the exterior is in
very good condition. Even all 4 headlights are 100% factory original! In
my opinion, this is a turn-key car and needs NOTHING (in other words, if I were
to keep it, I would not do anything else other than regular maintenance).
Interior:
The interior is also in great condition and has no evidence of any smoke smell. Except for the headliner, it is 100% original and very clean. It is like stepping back into 1978 again. It even smells brand new. The seats feel, look, and smell brand new….they are very comfortable and clean. The door panels and armrests are still in great shape too. The dash pad is in great shape without any cracks. The trunk is also clean and very original. It includes the original jack too. Headliner was replaced a few years ago.
Mechanical:
The following was done in recent times:
-New tires
-Inspection through August 2013
-Front brake rotors turned (this fall)
-A/C converted to R-134
-Transmission rebuilt to factory specs (2008)
-Coolant tested to proper freeze point (this fall)
-New A/C vacuum switches in dash (this fall)
-Lube, oil, and filter
As stated previously, the car runs beautifully and has lots of power. The engine and Turbo-Hydramatic 200 transmission is smooth as silk with no odd noises. Engine runs great and does not burn any oil. The transmission fluid is pink, as it was rebuilt a few years ago. There are no major leaks to speak of underneath the car. I notice a small drop of oil on the garage floor from sitting overnight, but nothing of concern. This will make a great vehicle for the next car enthusiast.
It drives like a new car. You wouldn't believe it was a 35 year old car! Even the A/C blows cold and heater is good and hot. The clock is the only thing that does not work.
Overall:
If you are looking for a great example of a beautiful, solid, reliable, very clean classic Pontiac Grand Prix in great shape, this one’s for you. It runs and drives nicely and will make a very nice classic for you. Drive it and take it to the show!
