Hurst F85 Model - Only 1,029 Total Built and ONLY 163 manufactured with this equipment on this VERY RARE model. It is a post car and features a 4 speed, bench seat, and no tail / spoiler on the trunk. It has the original engine and it has been re-built (aprox. 12,000 miles on engine) and original transmission. The seats and be re-upolstered. Original wheels and caps. The guages on the dash have been replaced and the original gaugues are on hand and come with the car. This car runs great and looks great, has no known mechanical probelms. It could easily be driven daily and with alittle more work a show car. By all accounts, when it came to horsepower ratings, Detroit had reached the summit in 1970. Several milestone cars come to mind, like the 450hp LS6 Chevelle, the 370hp Ram Air IV GTO Judge, 370hp W-30 4-4-2 and 425hp Hemi 'Cuda. Also by this time, insurance companies had wised up to the race-ready cars coming from the Motor City and sky-high premiums became the rule rather than the exception. This, coupled with looming emissions standards and unleaded fuel, cast ominous clouds over further development of the muscle car. In response to the insurance surcharges, the Big Three began offering what could be dubbed "junior" muscle cars. Among them were the 1970 Dodge Dart 340, the Chevelle Heavy Chevy of the early 1970s, the Pontiac GT-37 and, probably the wildest of all, the 1970 Oldsmobile Rallye 350 with its retina-searing Sebring Yellow paint from stem to stern. Internal literature written for Oldsmobile sales reps explained that the Rallye 350 was intended to compete with "an existing product group made up of performance appearance packages added to intermediate price leaders." The same internal documents went on to point out that the Rallye 350 was about $68 cheaper than a 1970 Road Runner, and advised, "Remember this... the Rallye 350 will find its greatest appeal to the prospect who wishes to identify with the 'performance look'... the NOW look... that has been happily combined with the practical aspects of a more conventional engine." The Rallye 350 was introduced on February 18, 1970, by Oldsmobile General Manager John Beltz and made its debut at the 1970 Chicago Auto Show. However, some were built as early as the second week of January 1970. The car consisted of option package W-45, which included blackwall tires, a W-25 fiberglass hood, the L74 350 V-8 engine, N34 Custom Sport steering wheel, D35 sport mirrors, FE2 Rallye suspension, N10 dual exhaust and W35 rear deck air spoiler. All of these items would have been included on a true Rallye 350. Oldsmobile built 3,547 copies of the Rallye 350--a relatively small number that might back up reports that dealers found it difficult to sell the wild-looking coupes, due at least in part to the yellow bumpers. We've heard that, in response to this, some dealers took off the urethane-coated pieces and installed standard chrome bumpers--so don't be too alarmed if you find an original car with chrome bumpers; it may not necessarily be a fake. Several Olds experts corroborated the belief that chrome bumpers were retrofitted at dealerships, but there is no way of knowing for sure how many cars received this treatment. What is known is that every Rallye 350 left Lansing with yellow bumpers. As another means of dressing up the Rallye 350s, some dealers installed stainless trim rings on the yellow wheels, since all of these cars left the factory without rings, in keeping with the intended "sporting spirit on a budget" image. But most consumers didn't have the opportunity to even try to order extra bright trim from the factory, since many Rallye 350s were ordered by Oldsmobile zone representatives; many others were ordered by dealers. According to those in the know, very few Rallye 350s were actually ordered by customers, because so little was known about them. That lack of knowledge may have contributed to the lukewarm reception these cars received upon arrival at dealerships. Reportedly, many remained unsold into the 1971 model year. One expert told us he remembers "a sea of bright yellow" brand-new, unsold Rallye 350s at an East Coast storage facility. Today, the only real way to tell if a car is a true Rallye 350 is through original paperwork, such as a window sticker or build sheet. If the carpet is original, the broadcast sheet may be under the driver's side front seat. If so, W-45 will appear on that sheet. There is no way to determine a true Rallye 350 through the VIN; however, these models were not built until mid-January of 1970, and all were assembled in Lansing, denoted by the letter M in the VIN, so any example with an earlier production date or a plant code other than M should be considered suspect. ENGINES The only engine offered for the Rallye 350 package was the L74 350-cu.in. V-8, rated at 310 horsepower with a single four-barrel carburetor, which could be ordered in any F-85 or Cutlass. The 310hp engine had a 10.25:1 compression ratio and 390-lbs.ft. of torque at 3,200 rpm, using a single four-barrel 4MV Rochester Quadrajet carburetor. Oldsmobile engines of this era featured super-strong blocks with heavy doses of nickel, which makes them especially durable. The cylinder heads should have a "6" cast on the left front and right rear of the castings. The base 310hp 350 could sprint from zero to 60 in 7.0 seconds flat. On a drag strip, the Rallye 350 could get down the track in 15.27 seconds at 94.33 mph. Many enthusiasts assume that the W-31 high-performance Olds 350 (325hp) was optional in the Rallye 350 cars, and it would seem like a natural, but according to the original order form and word from several experts, the W-31 was not available in the Rallye 350. Original internal documents seem to bear this out, by focusing on the Rallye 350's "insurability" due to its engine's "more practical horsepower rating." There were reputedly about a dozen W-31 Cutlasses painted Sebring Yellow, but these are not Rallye 350s. Some of the confusion may have come from the popular practice of fitting Rallye 350 engines with the W-31 aluminum intake manifold, which at the time was readily available from the dealer's parts counter at what we're told was a very reasonable cost. TRANSMISSIONS If a Rallye 350 was ordered on the F-85 body style, the base transmission should have been a three-speed column-shifted manual transmission, though one Olds expert told HMM he has never seen such a car. If you ordered a Cutlass or Cutlass S model, the car arrived with a floor-mounted three-speed manual transmission. According to the original order form for a Rallye 350, a wide-ratio Muncie four-speed was offered, though not with the optional 3.91:1 axle ratio. Despite this, our expert tells us he doesn't think the M20 was ever actually used in this model. Instead, he feels the optional Muncie M21 close-ratio box was the sole four-speed choice. The only automatic available was an optional Turbo Hydra-Matic 350. All these transmissions were well-made and offer great performance and rock-solid reliability, typical of GM quality at this time. Parts for all transmissions are readily available from a variety of vendors in Hemmings Motor News. DIFFERENTIAL The standard rearend in a Rallye 350 was an Oldsmobile-built 12-bolt unit (different than a Chevrolet 12-bolt), equipped with 3.23:1 gears. There were two optional ratios available: a 3.42:1 and 3.91. Optional Anti-Spin, Oldsmobile's brand name for its limited-slip differential, could be ordered. The correct code for a 3.42:1 rear is SH, usually stamped on the front side of passenger side of the axle tube. The code SF denotes a 3.23:1 axle and SJ indicates the axle is 3.91:1 ratio. Like all GM differentials of this era, they are virtually maintenance-free and if they're kept up to the proper level with gear oil and are not abused, should last as long as the car--if not longer. A little-known fact is that, toward the end of Rallye 350 production, Oldsmobile permitted and delivered the optional W-27 aluminum differential housing and cover. One expert told HMM he has seen such cars. SUSPENSION While performance was the focus of GM muscle cars in 1970, more and more attention was being paid to the handling capabilities of the suspension systems. The standard suspension in the Rallye 350 was the aforementioned FE2 "Rallye Sport Suspension" package, which included stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, both front and rear. These cars could handle some pretty good turns and provide a firm, yet comfortable ride. The best part is that virtually every component is available to repair or even upgrade your car's worn-out suspension. BRAKES Standard braking for the Rallye 350 included manually operated drum brakes at all four corners; this was the last year for non-finned drums at GM. Power brakes, which were recommended, but not required, featured front discs with GM's very reliable Delco-Moraine system. This system was widely used in various GM models, and today, parts remain plentiful at any chain auto parts store for bargain prices. WHEELS & TIRES The only wheels offered on this model were the 14 x 7-inch version of the Super Stock II, painted Sebring Yellow and again, sans trim rings. They mounted G70-14 blackwall tires as standard equipment, but option codes PK5 and PX8 would net the buyer the same wheels with either raised white letter tires or white stripe tires, respectively. No Rallye 350 ever came with 15-inch wheels and tires, and all used the earlier-style bolt-on center caps. Today, used wheels shouldn't be too difficult to locate, as they were offered on other Cutlasses, and reproduction wheels are available from Wheel Vintiques in Fresno, California, Used wheels can be bead blasted, refinished and fitted with reproduction bolt-on center caps. BODY & INTERIOR As previously stated, Olds built 3,547 Rallye 350s; 2,527 based on the Cutlass Holiday Coupe body and 1,020 on the base F-85 Club Coupe. The remaining 160 were based on the F-85 Sport Coupe, which has a B-pillar, or "post." There was no stainless trim on the post. A Holiday Coupe's VIN begins with 33687. The F-85 Club Coupe is 33277 and the F-85 Sport Coupe's VIN begins with 33677. The only color available was Code 51: Sebring Yellow. However, cars with special order paint such as a Rallye 350 usually have (- -) where the code normally appears on the cowl tag. The grille was a blacked-out Cutlass S piece with silver trim. Back in 1970, GM used Magic Mirror acrylic lacquer with no clearcoat. This paint, while easy to polish and wax, was prone to damage from extended time in the sun and acid rain. Both bumpers used the same steel cores as their chrome counterparts, but instead of being plated, they were urethane coated and baked at 250 degrees. The rear bumper was a 4-4-2 piece with the cutouts intended for the trumpet exhaust tips. Despite being a "low-budget" performance car, Olds did offer luxury items, such as air conditioning, cruise control (available only with automatic transmission), power door locks, power windows, power seat, stereophonic radio and power trunk release. One sticky area is whether factory air conditioning was available with a four-speed transmission on a Rallye 350. Careful interpretation of the factory order form would indicate that if the wide-ratio M-20 transmission were selected, then A/C could also be ordered, though only if the standard 3.23:1 rear gear ratio was retained; ordering A/C with the 3.42 or 3.91 ratio was expressly prohibited, even on automatic cars. However, some Rallye 350 experts feel that A/C and four-speed were simply not permitted to coexist on this model.
