It honors the 1966 original with a Ford V8 up front and a classic black color combination, then adds just enough modern conveniences and performance to create a stunning performance machine. If you’re looking for something unique that can be driven anywhere, anytime, this is your car. If you bleed Ford Blue but a Mustang isn’t what you’re looking for, then perhaps Ford’s original muscle, the Fairlane 500, is more appealing. With classic good looks thanks to the steeply raked rear window and stylish stacked headlights, the Fairlane certainly looks the part of a performance machine. With that glossy black paint job, it actually looks downright sinister, and suddenly details like the subtle upward sweep of the rear quarter panel behind the door and the laser-straight crease that runs the length of the body are magnified. They took their time with the bodywork and it shows, too, with smooth contours that don’t wash out under close examination, and a finish that shows a lot of depth. Sure, it’s been driven a bit so it isn’t a perfect trailer queen, but you’ll find you have no complaints when you see it in person, even under the bright lights in our showroom. The most visible upgrades are inside, where custom upholstered bucket seats have replaced the original boring bench. The driver’s seat has power assist, so it’s easy to get comfortable behind the wheel, and the rear seat has been expertly upholstered to match the front buckets. The two-tone upholstery has a racy look and I especially like the red stripe running along the door panels that mirrors the stripes on the exterior of the car. Factory gauges monitor speed and fuel level, but not much else, so someone wisely added auxiliary gauges under the dash. For entertainment, an AM/FM/CD stereo system was added with speakers in the kick panels and rear parcel shelf, and that trick Hurst shifter is rightfully the centerpiece of the interior. And as a bonus with the Fairlane, you get a spacious trunk that redefines “full sized.” No resto-mod worth its Torque Thrusts carries a stock motor, and this Fairlane packs a thundering 351 Windsor, which fits in the engine bay quite nicely. With an Edelbrock intake, aluminum heads, and a nice, lumpy cam, this over-achieving small block moves the mid-sized Fairlane with gusto. Built for combat, it includes a custom fuel system, an MSD ignition, and a gigantic aluminum radiator that will keep this car cool at 100 MPH in Death Valley. A C4 3-speed automatic and a Ford 9-inch rear are up to the challenge, and a custom dual exhaust system with long-tube headers, X-pipe and dual glasspacks give it the best exhaust note this side of Daytona. Those shiny Torque Thrusts will always look right and wear staggered 215/65/15 front and 245/60/15 rear BFG radials. A very cool mid-sized Ford for the guy who has out-grown his Mustang.
