Vehicle Detail
Studebaker 1956 Golden hawk I felt lucky to find this car a year ago, but a change of employment from coast to coast and moving costs is requiring me to sell. To start, this Golden Hawk was in a really good shape, no rust, no major damage, other than age. Like most of good finds, this car spent the last 12-13 years in garage and was seldom driven. The only problem which was obvious was that sometime in the past the front hood had been replaced with one from a "57 Golden Hawk. The previous owner did not have knowledge of it. I have since sourced the correct front hood and had it painted to match the car. Since November last year the car has received some serious care and updates. All updates were done with a goal to use authentic old, rebuild parts or new NOS parts. Even as you know that is more complicated and more expensive option. I think this was the right choice and I would do it again.Engine was rebuilt by Packard specialist Mr Jack Vince. Due to different definitions of what a rebuild means, I will share what he did. The rebuild included the following:Bore cylinders - .030" oversizeTurn/grind crankshaft - .020" undersize on both rods and mains, new bearingsregrind camshaft and new valve liftersreplace cam bearings, new cam retainer plate - new USA bearingsinstall hardened exhaust valve seats that allow the use of unleaded fuel.repair valve guides - new guides and positive seals on stems, reground rocker arm tips, cleaned rocker shafts internally, new soft plugscheck heads for cracks - machined head surface .005"New oil pump- Studebakers had some oiling issues from the factory and several updates have been developed throughout the years to address the issues. These were all done on the engine as well as fitting a later model Oldsmobile oil pump which is much better than the stock one. At the same time the engine was repainted. Also all engine parts (not included in engine rebuild) are taken off, spent time in degreasing tank, cleaned and repainted in appropriate engine color. All engine rubber parts are replaced (56 years rubber hoses and lines are not as rubbery any more) ·New dual exhaust, with new flowmaster mufflers. (it sounds great!!) · Intake manifold as well as exhaust manifolds were cleaned and powder coated. Intake - Orange Exhaust - Black ·Brakes (new hydroVac, new master brake, all new brake hoses…) ·Kingpins re done(machined) and new shocks ·Rebuild generator and starter, with new junction boxes, new distributor and distributor cap and wires ·Rebuild carburetor ·New battery ·New fuels sending unit,, with cleaned fuel tank , new fuel pump, and backup electric fuel pump, new fuel gage ·New tires ( white wall 225/70R/15) ·Power steering lines were replaced. ·Re-chroming of the turn signals, side check marks, Back lights and both front side grills ·Both side mirrors was re-chromed( original ones) ·I also re-chromed original hood center air intake grill(but some pitting is visible) ·Of course, new lenses and lights in back lights and turn signals ·Rebuild radiator, with all new hoses, rebuild inside heater core, with rebuild heater control. · Radiator overflow surge tank (which was very helpful this summer ,during those hot days) which can be removed if you wish. Rebuilt electric clock, with on-off switch( to protect battery) New Ingitions swith and keys ·Working original radio, cleaned and exchanged speaker by "Radio Relics" in FL Car has the correct seatbelts. Car cover is included as well as extra parts, like additional front grill (sand blasted for new re-chroming) interior light with tear drop cover, rear windshield, some original framed Studebaker 1956 advertisement........ This Golden Hawk is rebuild to be as original as can be superb driving machine, not a show car. I took it to Pacific southwest zone meeting in September 2012 in Salt Lake City and got that plack which said FIRST PLACE. So if you like, it can be a show car; but it will be a waste of one terrific driving machine. CONS: The paint is 19 years old but still looks very presentable. (Fresh paint on an old car is often used to hide damage or rust) Interior was replaced by previous owner (I assume also 19 years ago)No tears, no rips. Transmission is not the original. It has been replaced with a Dodge Torqueflite using an adaptor. It shifts great and still uses the stock column shifter. All work on this car is done by paid automotive professionals, no amatuer work. This vehicle is also for sale locally, and this action can be terminated at any time. Thank you for understanding. Good luck bidding
